Could it be Plaid?! Making an 1890's Walking Skirt

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome one and all! This project was surprisingly easy for me. I often look upon historical garments with fear and trepidation because they always seem so complicated, but this one was actually very straightforward! There were some minor complications, but nothing that stopped my motivation. I am so happy with the finished product and will be wearing it a ton when some cooler weather comes around. Enjoy and happy sewing!

PLEASE don’t say you are lazy or you procrastinate, it’s not true. For a start people who don’t see have no idea how physically taxing cutting out is. It’s exhausting. Then any creative process will take as long as it takes because it’s something you can’t force. You have to be in the right frame of mind and that might take a day or a year, you don’t get to control that, you just get to go along with it.

The skirt is really cute and looks great on you. Suggestion for waistband: Sew the skirt to the front of the waistband, leaving the inner waistband loose. This can be done on machine. Next, fold up the lower edge of the inner waistband and hand stitch in place. Hope that helps!

Many 18th century garments avoid closures . . . maybe the reason I like that period. The petticoats have apron ties, many bodices and jackets are simply pinned into place and then there are bedgowns (a workingclass socialy acceptable outergarment) that are belted in place, or fixed by tying an apron ontop. No hooks and eyes, snaps of buttons needed.

I struggled with the closure in my 1890's walking skirt, too. the hooks and eyes just didn't do it for me. so I caved in and put in a hidden zipper. much less stressful for me and it doesn't look bad at all.

Adore how the plaid hangs! So nice and satisfyingly square in front, flowing to pretty diamonds at sides/back. This skirt has great proportions all over, and looks very elegant and flattering from all angles.

the only thing I don't care for with the closure is, it seems unfinished - even though it is how they did it "then", but I was taught to extend the waist band on one side and cover the joining area with that tab.

  • @gerileemakes

It turned out great! I also hate closures. I'm currently procrastinating putting a zipper in the back of a really cute Halloween dress. Alternatively, hook and bar closures would have looked nice too. I like how they take up more space, hence you'd need to install fewer. You could have even done thread bars and keep the same hooks you'd already put in. Keep up the great work!

Iiiiim loving the longskirt life! I moved to maine and i just wear thermals underneath but its so cozyyy. And youre not lazy, youre resourceful!! Tons of extant garments show the lining was rhe mockup and went through tons of changes. Its wasteful to throw out a welldone mockup and also time consuming lol

long skirts are so great! And that is sooo cool! thank you for letting me know. It does seem very wasteful to get rid of mock ups; I usually just use the fabric to make other mock ups, but using it as a lining, especially for this project, was a life saver!

Im a severe novice at this and getting ready to take on my 1st walking skirt. Can you tell me why you added a backing to the skirt? Personal preference? Fabric scratchy? Im not using this type of heavy fabric but I’d like to know for curiosity sake. Thanks a bunch! Great video!

Thank you! I am also still learning and most things I do are purely the result of my weird brain making things more difficult 🙃 I inserted the lining for a few reasons: one to make it warmer for winter weather: two for the weight that contributes to the movement of the skirt; and three because it looks really satisfying to me 😂 hope this answers your question and I'm so excited that you're making a walking skirt! They are honestly amazing and I will never understand why they went out of style.

I just completed my mockup for this project and went one size up (to 10, from 8) and it's still way too small. I ended up having to add 4cm to the waistband and make the pleats smaller in the back. What size did you end up going with?

  • @TuscanyPosey
