COULD I BE ALERGIC TO THIS ART SUPPLY?! | Mystery Art Supplies Unboxing
Ойын-сауық
i was getting so itchy while filming this and it didn't go away for a day. haha so I'm thinking there might be a connection. I don't know for sure. but weirdly coincidental if not. haha
Anyway, that's besides the point. I actually managed to have fun with this art supply. which is honestly the only art supply I vocally despise. and I think a lot of it comes down to just taking my time with it and trying to work with the pastels instead of trying to make the art supply work for me. if that makes any sense? Oh, and references. Good references. hehe

You may be allergic to the dried pigments used to make the pastels. Cobalt is the one that springs to mind as it's used to make some blue tints. If you have the option you should try to get in with an allergist to get tested for metals and minerals allergies. It itches like crazy but super helpful for preventing accidental reactions.

Just remember that even though there's cobalt in B12, B12 is literally necessary to existence. Large quantities at once are to be avoided, but don't try to cut it out completely because that'll send you to the hospital.

It's definitely possible that you're allergic to soft pastels. I had a roommate in college who was really allergic to them. We found that out when I needed to work on a piece overnight one time in our room and she could not stop sneezing and coughing from them even tho I was across the room. I felt so bad and I made sure any other pastels works were done outside the room from that point on.

When using pastels you want to work in layers ( e.g after you blend the first use the stick without blending for details and harsher edges ) This helps a lot with vibrancy and not making it look ‘muddy’ as you said in the video Hope this helps😊

That pastel fought you in that it was really soft and falling apart and did not have an edge. There are different pastels for different purposes and I think those were best for blocking out not detail work. That being said you got a wonderful piece that you never would have tried without them.

Your videos have become my latest addiction. I was in such an art slump and I'm feeling re-inspired and am drawing every day again since discovering your videos. Thank you!
When Rin said "horse shape" it made me think of The Last Unicorn - that white-topped, strong wave, is very Last Unicorn evoling. I really love the finished piece!!!

Your positive attitude influences me to never give up on sketches. I also love your narration as you draw! We can hear your thoughts as you draw, and I find it so interesting! Thank you for the amazing videos, you are so talented ❤❤❤
When I was in illustration and design we were taught to scrape off a little but of chalk pastel onto the board with an xacto blade then spread it with a q tip. They were meant to be used with waxy pencil crayons and markers. Thanks for your videos. You're so good.
Pastels I've used a couple times. I should use them more in art. They are beautiful and great for blending in pictures. So smooth and fun. Although messy. Tip my older sister taught me, she always used pastels growing up. Spray your pastel art with hairspray after your done. The hairspray helps it not to be messy anymore when u pick up the finished piece.
I’m so glad you posted! I have COVID, and I haven’t been feeling good at all. But this made me feel a bit better! We appreciate you, Rin!
I love how your explore a medium. It's always a fascinating watch. even if it's a medium you openly dislike. Also, yes, you can totally be allergic to pastels, typically the pigments and how they're processed. I'm allergic to oil paint but not oil pastels for example. Allergies are weird and sometimes hyper specific.
That is such an amazing drawing, I love it. Also, when I still did wall-climbing, everybody used chalk to make our hands more grippy. That stuff was a notorious skin irritant, though. It dries out your skin, plus the grains damage the skin. We had special extra greasy hand creme to combat the effects. So you might not be allergic, it could just be the regular chalk effects. Getting chalk on very dry skin (for example after washing them with cold water) makes its damages even worse. You could make it less severe by using a very greasy creme beforehand, and then afterwards again (after thoroughly cleaning and drying your hands).
I got the exact same colors!!! I ended up making a beetle with mine. I had fun playing around with this box. It reminded me of middle school

Aghhhh!!! I’m so proud of you waffles!!! That is absolutely amazing and looks soooo pretty. I’m so glad that you still managed to have fun even when you felt uninspired and had your least favorite art supplies. I also get super itchy when using pastels so anytime I have to use them (because I also dislike the mess) I like to have a damp sponge/rag and a dry rag to wipe my hands as I go. Also afterwards sometimes some non fragrant lotion can help soothe the irritation
I love your running commentary as you work. We don’t always understand that the weird world in our heads is probably something we all have in common. It’s cool to actually hear someone else’s. Love the pastel drawing. Pastels are my medium of choice, and I think you’re brave for diving in without pouring over hours of videos to see how they are “supposed to be used.“
Gorgeous! I'm inspired to try my pastels again now!
The final result is so beautiful ! It gives me a sort of 70s 80s illustration/poster/picture vibe which is... weird... but I LOVE it !!

with regards to gray liners!! personally, I use them for sketching with mediums that dont respond to graphite well- like pastels and sometimes even markers when im using very light colors!
Don't forget to fixate your work if you use pastels. You can spray it with hair spray and then the pastels won't flake off. There are also fixating sprays you can buy but hair spray worked fine for me.

the styles of these videos are just SO fun and calming to watch!! and inspiring!
Pastels are awesome but you need to know a thing or two about it so, for instance, it doesn’t look so messy. If you paint it in a vertical position the dust naturally falls down, and you can have a wipe or a wet rug to keep cleaning your hands, mainly if you change from a dark color to a lighter one. One blending tool is foam, for example, those that come in packaging. Also you can apply a first layer of pastel on the paper and then dilute it with rubbing alcohol using just alcohol and a brush (like you are painting which alcohol on top of the pastel). This way, or using the foam, you can cover the paper colour completely (if you are not taking advantage of it to make the painting). I know you hate pastel and the mess and it is also considered not safe, so this probably is not very useful to you, but I am telling you anyway, ausência you never know when your archenemy comes back in another box 😜 by the way love your painting and how you instinctively figured some techniques on your own!!! Awesome!
Whoa!!! The final result is gorgeous! :O It's so beautiful. And the fact that you tend to struggle with pastels makes this even more impressive, I'm so proud of you. It turned out amazing!!
