The Cottonwood Lakes hike probably gives you the most bang-for-your-buck in the Eastern Sierra. The hike starts from the Cottonwood Lakes Campground, already at 10,000 feet, so your car does most of the legwork to get you to altitude. From there, the Cottonwood Lakes Trail gently makes its way through pristine alpine terrain to a series of several crystal-clear alpine lakes, all in the shadow of the high Sierra peaks like Mt Langley. Every step of this must-do hike is spectacular, so give it a try.

Love the narration. This is flat out cool. This hike has been on my bucket list for awhile. A few years back there were some comments made online by somebody who was talking about taking care of business up there. I dont think any ethical High Sierra backpacker isnt gonna pack out their TP but I heard a rumor you had to also pack out your business from up there as well. Say it ain't so!

Thank you and def give it a whirl, it's a classic. So for taking care of biz, you don't need a WAG bag but in high traffic areas they recommend it to lighten the burden on the heavily trafficked areas. Choice is yours but plenty of folks don't. If you're only doing an overnighter you can get away with using the toilets at the trailhead.

HikingGuy.com Old Army was a tough hike, but at no point did I feel unsafe. Saw some snow but none near the trail. I would not want to descend that way, but that’s personal preference. I usually opt for the steeper route up and the more gradual route down (Baldy, Rae Lakes)

I was there a few weeks ago, I saw 2 fat coyotes on the way up to the lakes. Taking the New Army Pass trail at the fork instead of the right is easier for those who are out breath at that point. The whole place is great. The gate is locked now after the storm this week.

Generally there's enough space so that its not as crowded as a city/county park. Sometimes there's a few groups leaving at the same time (mornings) but the pace differences generally space everyone out. Whitney is prob the most crowded, and even that, not too bad

The beauty of Cottonwood wood lakes is there is no huge elevation gain from parking above 10,000 feet to lakes. AND it ain't far. 7 miles to pass easy trail. The drive up is awesome. Camping great. Mosquitoes 🦟 abound.

You should be okay but it's first come, so always hard to say. I've always got a spot and you can probably grab a spot at Horseshoe meadow or just setup around the trailhead campground if it's full. People sleep in cars, etc. there so it's not too strict.

Keep in mind there are two main campgrounds. The one at Cottonwood Pass trailhead is larger than the one at Cottonwood Lakes trailhead--and I much prefer it. It's a three-minute drive between the two. I once mistakenly arrived at Horseshoe Meadow on a holiday weekend (not thinking!) and both campgrounds were full. A ranger was directing traffic (have never seen that otherwise nor such crowds), and he said I could camp at the equestrian campground that is next to the main Cottonwood Pass campground, so there always is that as a fallback.
