You know my background. I would call you out in a heartbeat and enjoy it, but you were right. You gave the point by in the perfect spot but he just got too impatient. Happens all the time.

Generally at this level, it's never a good idea to take the pass going into T10, because he would have absolutely tracked out to your door. It was fun seeing you out there! Look forward to seeing you on your second lap of the world :)

Thanks for sharing the learning moment. That is extremely helpful as those inevitably happen on track.

This is a great and very representative video of running a session @COTA, anywhere from Beginner to Intermediate...... which is where I fall. Beyond that, it gets kind of hairy. Last time out asked a friend with GT4 Cayman if my wife could do a ride along. I didn't realize he was running that session in White Very Advanced. She didn't talk to me for a while after they returned! lol

I've had more than one person give me a point-by going into 10, then totally cut off the corner by diving down to the apex. This is why I don't give or take point-bys going into 10.

you definitely gave him enough room. i wonder if he felt he had too much speed and thought he might track out into you, then backed out

Drove Cota yesterday for the first time in a 2019 BMW M2c. Very fun and technical track! I’d agree that he was right on the curb and had the concern of carrying it into the furthest point which would bring him into your door! We are all learning and he erred on the side of caution I believe. That said my choice would have been to wait until after the turn for a 2nd point by to pass.

Awesome content! Have you compared lap times with a stock C5 yet? I’d love to see that as well..🙏🙏

I haven't, but if you know some stock C5 lap times I'd be curious. I'd expect the Vette to probably be slightly quicker around COTA (assuming similar tires) given the HP advantage.

@@LapoftheWorld I’m in San Diego, so willow springs is my reference point.. I haven’t been to cota yet. I have a C5 base, but I believe it would be very close since the nsx has much better handling characteristics.

@@luizferreira5213 Stay tuned long enough and I'll get out to Willow Springs. Right now I've only done Thunderhill and part of Thermal Club in California. We may be back out West later in the year though so will see what fits in the schedule.

I don’t see any issue on your part. He had plenty of space on his left side to give himself more room if he wanted it. He could’ve hugged the curve but didn’t. If he’s only comfortable passing with large amount of space given by the slower car, then he’s not respectfully sharing the track. His angle of attack in the corner wasn’t great either which probably made him uncomfortable as well, needing to cut harder. No one’s fault at the end of the day.

Yeah... I would have waited until after the apex of T10 to let the Viper by.

Viper just had 2nd thoughts on taking your point. Im not sure it should be called an incident. It’s an ACR and can stop on a dime.

Maybe an "encounter"? Not faulting the decision there, but always a little disconcerting to hear tires when someone's along-side-ish.

IMHO, you did fine. Viper guy should have just waited. There's just no point in taking an uncomfortable pass, which clearly that was for him.

Yeah, sorry, I think you pinched him off. When I watched it at full speed, my heart said, 'WTF?'. He had no way of knowing if you were going to continue to squeeze him. Now, Max V would have just dove in there and pushed you off the track but he has sponsors to repair his car. ;-) At the last few frames of 14:48, you turned in. I don't think that was 'driving predictably' as you mentioned later in your narration. As you say, this is not a 'pro' group so he doesn't know how experienced you are in letting people past. On first viewing, my gut thought you were heading for the apex. I bet he did too.

Like I said, I'll own my part in it making the assumption about the other drivers comfort with proximity. He was forced to assume I was doing something stupid in this case and I won't fault him. The reality was that I gave him room and wasn't turning-in, but I have to acknowledge that he didn't know this (not psychic).

I agree. In an intermediate session or honestly in any session, I wouldn’t assume that the other car would stay to the right. When you turned in to use the middle of the turn, I would have absolutely backed off. There is no way I would have chanced it with an expensive car. When I give a point-by there in an HPDE or if I’m instructing a student and they give a point-by in the corner, I would slow the car down a bit more and huge the right side of the track. I’ve seen too many people go into the wall on the left side of that turn (yes, the left), and with the downhill blind turn I would never want to take an inside line there. Just way too risky…especially with someone turning in to use the middle of the track with an unknown (to me) level of experience. And as the car getting passed, I cringed when I saw you turn in…as I would have half expected him to track out and collect your car. And just lifting like he did going into that downhill turn was incredibly dangerous. But I would have done the same thing if I were him. In a race, I would expect that. But not in a DE.
