the original movie was filmed in and takes place in 2001, so they probably wanted to keep that style to keep the movie fans happy.

Congrats on your Tony. I was in the musical "Once Upon A Mattress." Our costume designer made the queens dress so elegant, and spent sooo much time on it. It was Definately fit for a queen. 👑

Aria Couret how is she a pain? She has to be able to move in the outfits. If you’ve seen the musical, Elle moves ALOT! She has to be comfortable especially in that marionette outfit.

The costume design was ok , not anything special. The hair and wig design was absolutely horrid and ruined the show for me almost. Definitely ruined Elle.

I always thought the costumes for this musical looked really out-dated, tacky, and cheap unfortunately.

banana2510 it's because the movie was set in 2001 so the play was set in 2001. If you pay attention to the end of the song "so much better" Laura has a flip phone lol. You can google fashion from the early 2000's it was hideous lol

Jammy56 yes but that was when she graduated from law school after who knows how long. Also the musical opened in 2007 so it could’ve been a tribute to that.
