Costco Thera Pure Hepa Air Purifier Review

This is my item review of the Costco Thera Pure Review Hepa Air Purifier. So far we love it and its definitely a keeper. It's quite enough to have in the bedroom at night, the ambient light is sufficient to navigate inside and easy to clean.

Bought something similar by the same company --- an Envion Therapure M201 -- in June 2010. It was a older model but similar to the model in this youtube video review. Its power supply died last month (May 2016) after running intermittently with the fan setting mostly at medium and the UV bulb off. When it was working it needed about an hour or two to clean up the air of a 17 feet Long x 12 feet wide by 7 feet High bedroom at the Medium setting. High setting is loud and persistent use of the high fan setting is likely to shorten the lifespan of the air purifier. When my unit died - I opened it up - inside my old air purifier - the UV bulb circuitry was integrated into the 66w Power supply board. The UV bulb was fitted inside a metal box that two turbine fans drew air away from. All the air drawn into the turbine fans had to go through the Hepa filters but not all the air drawn by the turbine fans would have to go through the UV bulb metal box ....

we got the newer 640s from Costco to replace our last model. note to self: do not drop! they shatter easily! anyway, I smoke in the basement while watching movies, set this up next to me on a bench. works beautifully. leave on auto so the fan turns up higher automatically when it senses bad air. filter clean comes on about once a month with every day use. we never turn ours off. auto button is the best! easy to clean and then reset filter light by holding down the ion and uv buttons simultaneously for a few seconds. love this thing. got ours for $79 during a sale/coupon at Costco. we want to get another for our upstairs. quiet, effective, and worth every penny. especially with animals and occasional smoke. no odors and you can tell by the filter that it's working. very satisfying to clean it and know what I got out of the air and my lungs. no need to mention why should I care if I smoke--I'm aware of the contradiction. others live here and visit, no need for them to be subjected to my bad habits and animal dander.

Obviously. You can feel most of the product is cheap plastic the moment you pick it up.

Filter is very expensive and available only from Envion. Bad corporate strategy like buying cheap printer but expensive ink. I decided to buy a new unit Germguardian also from Costco with very good review but now the filter is available on Amazon cheap. Think before you buy because eventually you need to replace the Hepa filter.

I have the Thera Pure 240 that I purchased in October 2016. When I moved the unit to vacuum around it, I noticed a black soot ring on the floor around the base and on some of my power cords near the unit. I cleaned the filter thoroughly and moved it to another location and it's doing the same thing again. Customer service said the filter needs to be replaced. Really?! The unit is less than 4 months old! Is anyone else having this problem?

This is because you are using the ion setting. I would advise to turn this off since it creates ozone which some studies show are bad for your health. The reason their is a black dirt on the floor is because the ions make the bad particles (pollen, mold etc) larger and sticky (so they will get stuck in the filter better) the problem with ionizers is the ozone effect, and they are not effective because some of the sticky particles never make it to the air purifier and thus get stuck to the walls or floor. I may be ordering one of these in a few days and I will be doing an extensive review on how effective it is as well as a general buying guide for air purifiers.

I have a question for you or anyone who sees this. I bought one of these from Costco for my parents. I have heard of "ionized air purifiers" and that they give off carbon. I heard that this can be a health hazard. I turned off the "ion" feature thinking that would solve the problem. I would like to use the "ion" feature if it isn't dangerous. But why use it, if it is doing the opposite of what I want it to. If anyone one knows about "ionized air purifiers", please let me know if this qualifies as one. My parent's health is important to me. Don't want to contribute to their deaths lol.

Thank you for the quick reply! The new version has this feature called "ion boost". So I think they just recently put ionizers in them. The good news is I can turn the feature off. But still, I am like why add it if it is dangerous and just releases unecessary carbon. Thank you so much for your reply though. The new version looks just like yours except the display is a little different.

oh, yea I would leave it off as well. I used to have one paid like $150 for it not only didn't it barely work well but after a few months it kept making a zapping noise.

fyi when i was in store today the version they sell is a UV light, not ionizer. I would leave the UV light on, its a germ killer.

My parents have 2 Therapure air purifiers with remote controls included in case the 1st one breaks. My blue bedroom had odors that really nauseated the 3 of us, so here we are. I NEVER EVER use it at night, because it may lead to fire hazards. Safety first! The best part is it doesn't zap like the Oreck XL air purifier used to do back when Oreck was in business to sell air purifiers.
