Cost to build a large backyard pond| DIY

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This pond is 8 metres (26 foot)x 10 meters (30 foot). It has a 16m (52 foot) long stream. It is 1.4m (just over 4 foot) deep. The break down of cost are as follows:
-$200 for the dig (Mates rates)
-$4000 for the liner ( Thats just for the pond and intake bay, i had some existing liner from and old pond for the bog filters and stream)
-$1600 geotextile
-$400 for seam tape, primer, rollers, silicon, foam etc.)
-$2500 Rock and gravel ( I also reused the old rock and gravel from the old pond)
-$100 Drainage pipe
-$70 Second hand olive barrels
-$1000 pumps
-$100 extension cords for pumps
-$1100 on plumbing includes the air pump price.

    Great video!!! u sure do lovely ponds!!! I have a 30 by 30' pond with a 50 foot bubbling brook, a waterfall and a intake bay holding both pumps. I need to add it up but we just finished the rock last week. In the spring, i will be planting. I am sure i am at 10,000 dollars and i got all the rock i wanted for about $800 as it cost me that to go pick it up in fuel. Its so nice to have a run down like this when u r dreaming!!! Otherwise, like w me i was nervous as i built it! So great video!!!!!

This is exactly the kind of pond i dreamed of in my yard and i'm glad that it can be achieved for a little over $10k, as i know how expensive they can be, but i'm happy to spend the amount you did for your pond and now i'll be able to do one of my own sooner, rather than years later down the road.

    Looks so good, Kev. It's just going to get better and better as the landscaping grows in. Our ponds are similar in size and features and I was about to say, "we're at about the same cost" but then I remembered I'm spending USD and you're spending AUD... and I still have a $1-2k more to go. Doh!

    I thought you’d come out much cheaper with your liner. Although you do have all those milk crates for your neg edge and wetland. I’m trying no crates in the bogs. Can’t wait for an update 👍

  • @TylerTervooren

    @TylerTervooren

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Ozponds I got the milk crates for about $1.25/each so not a budget buster (though I did buy 400 of them). My next update will explain why I did not come out much cheaper on my liner. Changed my plan too many times midway through the build. I can't believe you got all your utilities located and your whole pond dug for $200. I paid $1,000 to hire a machine and operator to dig the initial hole, and another $1,000 to borrow a family friend's machine for basically as long as I need it. That second $1,000 has been really worth it, though!

    Thanks so much for making this video. It's really amazing. We are dreaming about a natural swimming pond that we can share with plants, fish and other wildlife on our small acreage property in Victoria. We swam in so many natural ponds when we lived in Europe and it just feels so much nicer and more natural than your standard swimming pool. But it looks like it is much more expensive to have one professionally done here than in Europe. For something that looks very similar to your pond, but with a slightly deeper swimming zone, we have been quoted a starting price of around $150,000. Crazy! That takes it completely out of our grasp. Now we are looking at whether it's possible to DIY it, but we've heard so many people say not to even bother trying. This video gives me hope that maybe it could be possible. Is there anything you would suggest, if someone wanted to basically do what you have done here, but say to 2m depth in the centre? Also, any chance of an update video so we can see how it's all looking now? Thanks again!

    What is the electrical consumption kwh for this pond? If living in a 4 season climate, what would you do during late fall, winter, early spring? Would you run pumps during those seasons?

  • @Ozponds

    This pond runs anywhere from 0.2kwh (200w)- 0.3 (300w) I’m using variable speed pumps. 4 pumps @ about 50w, plus an aerator (20w). Sometimes I put the pumps up more, sometimes less. I run them all year.

    I disagree professionals would not done a better job. Yes I think 60k is about right. Excluding your intake bay so perhaps 70k i think people are getting ripped off. I don't see the money when you break it down. Rocks are dead cheap and liner not that expensive then skimmers pumps piping. My only criticism is you could have used larger rocks in the build. But yes its a good build i would suggest building a stone wall below the water level to hide the visible liner

  • @Ozponds

    @Ozponds

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeap I wish I had been able to use larger rock but I couldn’t afford a machine to just sit around and be available when I had time to work on the pond 😞. But I’m a bit upset about the wall suggestion, there is no exposed liner below the water surface, there’s some on the edges where I’ve still go to tidy up. But the pond itself is completely rocked.😞
