Siem Reap is having a hard time right now. Consider looking into other provinces. There are some cool spots in the country. Mercer Island is freakin expensive man!

Cheers for the information! I've been thinking about Cambodia for the last couple of years. I'm going to give my life maybe another year or so of attempted improvements here in the states before biting the bullet and flying away.

You are now in Kampot (I think). Which do you prefer Kampot or SR?

  • @JonAbroad

Kampot by a massive amount. Kampot has the river, many water falls, bokor mountain, the beach, rabbit island, the list goes on. SR has the temples and pub street and a slow moving river that smells half the year. This is all my personal opinion though.

@@JonAbroad lol, thanks. Aaron in Cambodia's "Cost of living like a boss n Cambodia" was interesting... he says cost are up considerably and also said that Kampot was more $ than SR..... that surprised me.

SR is a much larger area so finding cheaper rent will be easier for sure. Kampot has its expensive areas like any town would. There are budget friendly places in Kampot as well. The food prices are the same in any town you choose, it just depends on what restaurant you go to and what style food you are ordering. Electric prices are a national rate, the biggest draw will be your aircon. How many aircons you have, and how long you run them. If you care to, see what style aircon you have. The "inverter" style will be most energy efficient but are typically twice the price when purchasing, so cheaper rooms with aircon units will probably be of the cheaper variety thus costing more in the electric bill. Pretty much the price of living in any town in Cambodia will be the same plus or minus a few dollars. It's all about where you want to live. Also keep in mind that all prices on rent are negotiable. Take a look on Facebook and join the "Kampot Noticeboard" and "Siem Reap Expats" as rooms/apartments/houses are listed there frequently. I hope this helps

@@JonAbroad You bet it helps, thanks Jon, I'll buy you a meal and get you drunk as you like when I am in town! I even rejoined FaceBook (uggh) to be in the know more. My plan is evolving. I was going to live a while in Bangkok, Chaing Mai, Siem Reap and Kampot and make a decision. Now, I'm trimming that to a week in BKK to see a friend and how the city has changed... maybe a week in Siem Reap to check it out and then, at the end of the road... KAMPOT.. So far I just can't find anything not to like about Kampot, and that is remarkable. Jon, I appreciate your correspondence. - Carl

I encourage anybody who is thinking about moving to come see it for themselves. Give yourself a couple of weeks in each place then make a decision. Contact a few locals who are advertising homes and go and check out the neighborhoods. Always do you research, as I see you are doing now. I am not a drinker, however I'll drink a coke over a few games of pool with ya. - Jon
