COST OF LIVING: IMMIGRATION AND DENTIST

The cost of living in the Philippines will include medical, dental, and immigration costs. These are some of the cost breakdown that you should expect to pay. The Philippines Immigration office is in J Centre Mall in Mandaue City and there is also one in Gaisano Island mall on Mactan Island.

    The blood clot might dislodge where the extraction was if you exercise. If that happens you will get a dry socket where the extraction was. A dry socket is painful and basically is an infection from air, germs getting into the wound.

    I clot like it's going out of style. I have to make small cuts or punctures bleed or healing is delayed. The only time I will bleed is a stretched wound like a tooth socket or one time I went to the hospital to get a piece of steel taken out of me that was left in me so long it stretched the wound so it couldn't spring back immediately. That release waiver for not having the express lane is a new one on me. I'm not required to do that in Naga CamSur. If I were to be late extending, that would require automatic Express Lane Fee.

    Interesting Robert. We all "bleed" a little different. I had a friend who had some surgery around his eyes and he was told to stop taking blood-thinning meds for 10 days prior. He didn't and they had a very difficult time stopping the bleeding.

    That is true Michael. I have been satisfied with my medical experiences here. I have friends here who are happy with knee replacements in the PH. The first dentist I visited after college told me he was going to fix everything with gold. He gave me a huge quote of thousands of dollars and told me to get a loan and come back. I didn't go back to him. I have seen many dentist since and quality often doesn't seem to have much relationship with price. It costs much more to do business in the USA with liability insurance being a big factor. I usually charged business customers in California 2-3 times as much for my services as other states to do noise control because the costs and risks of doing business there are much greater.

    I have used Regular Lane many times now. It can save quite a bit of money in the long run -- as long as you don't need your passport back soon. Here's what you have to do: 1. When filling out the form, check the Regular Lane box (d'oh). 2. Submit the form to the officer at the entrance. He will try to discourage you by saying the process will take two weeks. Don't give up, say it's fine (make sure your current visa / visa waiver doesn't expire sooner -- although about 10 days is still OK). He will tell you that you have to go to a lawyer to sign a waiver. 3. Go to a small law firm located at the back of the BoI in J-Centre Mall. Ask for said waiver. It says you accept that your passport will be kept for 2 weeks and that you assume all the risk involved with that. 4. If the notary public is in the office, the process will take 10--15 minutes. You will have to pay P300 for this. 5. Go back to the BoI office and submit your application together with the waiver. 6. Wait until they tell you to pay for the extension and let you know when you can collect your passport. Voila. You've saved 700 pesos. To avoid visiting the office again just to collect your passport (which costs time and money), simply come back a bit later, e.g. a few weeks before the next expiry date, collect your passport and then apply for another extension on the same day by repeating the whole process. This trick will save you money AND time as you will no longer have to sit around waiting for your visa to get processed (which can take more than 1 hour in the usually busy Mandaue office).

    Thanks for sharing that information maclauren. I am sure some will want to avail of this saving while many others will not. The only thing I ever have to pay out of pocket for is braces but my teeth don't need them. @@AmazingPhilippines1 Yes I'm retired law enforcement so it's pretty good thanks to the union. That's why it's been quite a decision considering overseas for me regarding costs. I probably will end up doing it a different way than most overseas; no marriage whatsoever there, probably rent- staying three to six months at a time in decent places and living back here the rest of the time. Between the ridiculous condo costs and the increase for medical, it wouldn't make sense for me to live full-time in places like the PI. I'd rather just pay the difference in airfare being in transit.

    Sadly, that's incorrect unless you are married to a filipina, at which point income would be irrelevant. You have to apply for retirement visa which will be $1,400+ to apply. If you are prior military, your deposit could be as low as $1,500, but if not, based on your life expectancy/ age the deposit could be $20K-$50K. You will be on and paying for tourist visas also until you are approved unless you applied for AND received retirement visa before you arrive. You will probably be making several trips to the Philippine Embassy in your country if you try to get a retirement visa before arriving in the Philippines. This isn't comprehensive, but things you should study up on. I hope this helps.

    @@AmazingPhilippines1 It may have changed Rod but the deposit was a sliding scale based on life expectancy. If you were just 50 years old, the deposit was higher $50,000. If you were 70+ of course the deposit was lower as you would be a potential burden on the state for less time. What has not changed is the $700 application fee and you have to pay the person helping you to process the application which is generally another $700 neither of which is refundable.

    One can avoid all of those trips to immigration and not have to worry about overstays if one gets the SRRV = Retiree Visa. You need not be of traditional retirement age! You can be retired military or not. I'm in my 40's. You also don't have to mess with the ACR card if you do the SRRV. You can exit and leave the country at Will. It requires a police clearance from one's country of origin. If one can do it saves a lot of hassle. You can go to immigration and extend up to about 2 weeks before that date Gary. Immigration opens at J Centre Mall at 8 AM. The mall opens at 10 so tell security that you are going to immigration and they will direct you around the outside and up the steps to the 2nd level. Good question. If you will be on a tourist visa you will need the throw away ticket. If you are on a longer term visa because of being married, I am not sure. It can get a little complicated and the website for Immigration doesn't answer all of the questions very well.

    If you're married to a Philippines citizen, your spouse is with you and you plan to reside in the Philippines, then you can obtain a 13(A) entry visa from the Philippines Embassy/Consulate in your home country. You won't need an onward ticket and the BI here will amend the 13(A) entry visa to a 13(A) resident visa after arrival. It costs less and is much less hassle than getting a 13(A) resident visa here in the Philippines, which is a multistep process and takes a year or more to accomplish. I think it can still be done if your spouse is in the Philippines. But it makes it more difficult as far as the necessary documentation is concerned. www.philippineconsulatela.org/consular-services-2/visa/spouse-or-unmarried-child-of-filipino-national

  • @AmazingPhilippines1

    @AmazingPhilippines1

    Good question Devin and I don't think there is any accurate answer. It really depends on your lifestyle and requirements. You can find cheaper rent many places if you get out and look for it. Food is often cheaper in the more rural towns. Davao City is considered a safe and clean city. Dumaguete is a favorite of many expats. It is often cheaper to live just outside of a city.

    A small big town would probably be the cheapest Devin. You would have to travel to a city to get some of the things you may want. You can go up in elevation to get cooler weather. Valencia, above Dumaguete, has several expats living there. I have a friend in Antipolo, east of Manila and higher in elevation. Iloilo City, Davao City and Tagum city which is near, Bacolod City, and Baguio City are places I would consider. Baguio is quite high and cool. Good luck hunting Devin.

  • @robertkubrick3738

    @robertkubrick3738

    Not that good a deal unless you intend to die there. If you are willing to live there until you die, are not against buying in a condo, OR if you have$50,000 to $20,000 to put in their bank and leave untouched, Unless you are prior military, then it's on the order of $1500, but in ALL cases it's $1400+ just to apply and that's about 2 years worth of tourist visas. It's hell to get your deposit back sometimes, same with selling a condo. If you are going to get married? It's a loss to get a retirement visa unless you are wanting to import a Ferrari or a Hummer which would come in tax free. Do a lot of research before you go down that path, not just with the government for requirements but online for problems people have had.
