Cost of living crisis: UK inflation hits 40-year high of 9%

It hasn't been this bad since the early 1980s. Confirmation today that in the year to April, inflation hit a 40-year high.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The figure of 9% was expected and yet shocking - the government seemingly at a loss.
The prime minister promised to look at “all measures” that might help, but his chancellor admitted they "cannot protect people completely".
Opposition politicians and campaigners accused the government of not protecting people at all and called for an emergency budget, and a windfall tax on oil and gas producers.

I'm not kidding when I say that the market crash and high inflation have me really stressed out and worried about retirement. I've been in the red for a while now and although people say these crisis has it perks, I'm losing my mind but I get it Investing is a long-term game, so focus on the long run.

I can’t focus on the long run when I should be retiring in 3years, you see I’ve got good companies in my portfolio and a good amount invested, but my profit has been stalling, does it mean this recession/unstable market doesn’t provide any calculated risk opportunities to make profit?

I agree, my profit has been consistent no matter the market situation, I got into the market early 2019 and the constant downtrends and losses discouraged me so I sold off, got back in Dec 2020 this time with guidance from an investment adviser that was recommended by a popular economist on a subreddit, long story short, its been 2years now and I’ve gained over $850k following guidance from my investment adviser.

Today's inflation is a result of corporate avarice, not only problems with the supply chain. We know that the money obtained by the higher prices isn't being transmitted along the supply chain since businesses are reporting record profits. More pricing result in increased revenue for businesses, which stays with them and goes into their pockets. We can rule out supply-related inflation because of this. If your stocks are extremely weak, now is an excellent opportunity to take a battered 401k and convert it to a Roth. Then, your Roth will be tax-free, and you will just have to pay taxes on the substantially reduced current values.

I delegate my daily investing decisions to an investment advisor because their entire skill set is concentrated on being both long and short at the same time, adopting a profit-driven strategy and removing risk as a hedge against the inevitable downtrends. When combined with exclusive insights/analysis, it is incredibly impossible not to outperform. I've had a relationship with an investment advisor for almost two years, during which time I've generated a return on investment of more than a million and five hundred and seventy thousand dollars.

When an MP's solution was to "Work more hours or get a better paying job" they failed to recognise the fact that a lot of supermarkets will hire staff only on part time contracts with the promise of "lots of available overtime". However, in reality the overtime is often "unpaid" and staff are expected to "take that time back" by working less hours the following week. I tried for 4 years to get a supermarket to increase my contract to full time and each time was told "It's not within our budget". During the pandemic a lot of people did unpaid overtime! People should get paid for every hour they work and not be expected to work for nothing and suffer having to struggle to eat and be able to keep a roof over their heads. All in the name of profit for big corporations.

Every person in the 21st century who works and pays taxes should have affordable food, housing, clothing, electricity, medicine, education and security. These are the minimum and necessary needs that any state is OBLIGED to provide to a citizen. No excuses are accepted. With the same success, you can live in a cave without a state. The duty of a citizen is to work and pay taxes, and the duty of any state is to provide conditions for a normal life. It seems to me that this is quite logical.

But what does not seem to follow is all of those things become absent if you fall ill, and can no longer work - even if your work has caused you harm, the financial support is very difficult to obtain because of red tape and refusals. The emphasis is helping those in work, or getting into work, - and not when you cannot work. People are even expected to work if they are ill or injured, which is really very distressing. Those that are meant to financially assist you are actually trained not to help you to claim what you rightfully deserve. It is a shocking system that needs a good shake up.

@@susanwhitley812 Very true. I hate people's fixation on the idea that working must be a prerequisite for assistance. As you mentioned, there are many people who are unable to work. Are these human beings unworthy of life? The way I see it the state must, so long as it has the real resources and there's no impedence, provide for its people regardless. Even when living 100% off the grid you must abide by property laws (just to name one example) put in place by the state, there's almost no escaping its influence. All human beings deserve to live a dignified life and it's the duty of the state to provide the resources to do so given it de facto forces you to live within its confines. The state generally uses its power to protect the wealthy and actively pushes everyone else down. The degree varies by country, but in my opinion if a country is able to feed all its people but allows even one person to go hungry then it's a failure.

Check out the Heritage Party They say and will govern properly We are now in our fourth year since we launched as a party in autumn 2020. This is a vital year for us as there is likely to be a General Election at the end of 2024. We will also be contending local elections in England and the London Assembly election next May. In the UK, the old political parties continue to work in lockstep together to allow perverse materials into classrooms for Relationships and Sexuality Education, permit open borders with unprecedented levels of both illegal and legal immigration, and make war on motorists with increasingly onerous restrictions on travel for ordinary citizens such as LTNs, 15-minute cities and the ULEZ. The Heritage Party is the only UK-wide party that will end the climate emergency hoax and lift all restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions. We will ensure that people can continue to buy and use petrol and diesel cars and keep gas boilers in their homes. We will repeal regulations that require homes to have SMART meters and meet impossible new building emissions criteria, designed to force the abandonment of older buildings that are a precious part of our heritage. We will introduce a Child Protection Bill to protect children from propaganda that attempts to confuse them with gender ideology or groom them into early sexual activity. We will also control our borders by pushing illegal boats back across the Channel and introducing strict caps on student and work visas while ensuring we train enough young British people to do the jobs that need to be done in this country. I Edwars say that if anyone votes Lib/Lab/ Con or any other left wing parties they need their head examined. Heritage could, with your help make Britain great again. Inflation has been caused by the useless UK government. The cost of living crisis is the result of the total mismanagement of this country by the whole government. Boris has no solutions and he has asked his MPs to think about a solution! 1. Brexit was a complete mess with the EU dictating the divorce terms and virtually no thought, discussion, or forward planning by the UK government during the five year negotiating period. As a result, the ridiculous conditions and requirements imposed on trade between the UK and the EU have caused trade and retail costs to increase on everything sold to and purchased from the EU. Delays and charges are destroying trade between UK and Europe! 2. Over 67,000,000 in the UK followed the lock down rules. Many lost their businesses, jobs, their homes, and cars as they could not pay their rents and lease/hire purchase charges. Many faced bankruptcy. Many suffered mental turmoil and even committed suicide. Many lived alone or were told they could not attend births, marriages, or funerals. Many could not visit family, members, or friends, including many with serious illnesses. This country has become a laughing stock and lost all respect abroad. Boris has no respect for the people of the UK or moral or ethical standards. Boris can apologize as much as he wants, but so many have died as a result of his mismanagement of the false pandemic 'Covid 19' scam. He has never explained how the NHS appears to have prevented the UK citizens from suffering from flu since 2020, yet could not prevent the UK citizens from getting 'Covid 19'. He has never provided evidence that the corona virus and variants have EVER been isolated and even the WHO has stated that lock downs do not work. So it is bad enough that he broke the very laws he imposed on the citizens of the UK, but he has never provided any proof that 'Covid 19' is and ever has been a pandemic....it is just the annual winter cold/flu! The Covid scam cost the country (tax payers)£450 billion and counting! 3. There is no excuse that he has to deal with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and their 'war crimes. British MPs are all complicit in all the war crimes committed in countries that have been enabled by supplying armaments and troops in Vietnam, Croatia, Libya, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen, and all MPs not speaking against such atrocities should be punished for their support for these war crimes. If Boris and the rest of the UK parliament had shown true leadership, the Ukraine war could have been avoided! brandnewtube.com/watch/jimmydoreshow-ukraine-russia-war-proof-zelensky-rejected-peace-with-russia_VzLPnkMERLYZmzJ.html See also brandnewtube.com/watch/mep-clare-daley-criticises-corrupt-hypocrites-of-the-eu-and-their-need-for-more-war-in-the-ukraine_r1LxbzHjM35BHEP.html If as much effort had been put into stopping NATO's expansion and enforcing the terms of the two Minsk agreements, there would be no war in Ukraine. Without a messy Brexit, a fraudulent corona virus pandemic, and without a war in Ukraine, energy, fuel, food shortages and price rises would not have happened! Solution.... 1. Drop all attempts to 'vaccinate' us against a false pandemic wasting yet more taxpayers' money. 2. UK parliament should organize a worldwide conference to stop the war in Ukraine, stop NATO from winding everyone up by escalating disputes into wars, and enforce the terms of the Minsk agreements. Stop sending armaments to Yemen and Ukraine wasting yet more taxpayers' money and parliamentary time which should be spent on problems here in the UK. 3. Stop supporting the warmongering actions of the US administration.

The best experience I have ever had is being poor; so poor that I could not afford the basics. The experience taught me how to budget; who my friends were; how important it is to adapt quickly to changing circumstances; how to value money and not squander it; the difference between wants and needs and how to prioritise them; humility. I am grateful for the experience because it grounded me; it taught me common sense. Poverty teaches empathy and kindness; you know what other people are going through because you have been through it yourself. Basic common sense advice- don't spend any money until after you have bought food and paid all your essential bills, budget every penny carefully- write it all down: income and outgoings; ask for help from friends, family and get free advice from debt charities; look for ways to increase your income; stay positive because money is only an energy flow between people; you do something you love that helps others and others show their appreciation with money. Never give up.

I haven't been at 'rock bottom' but quite close to it. I agree with a lot of what you say. I went through years of having to budget by writing down all my incomings and outgoings. Only buying things I really needed rather than wanted. I kept a roof over the family's head and enough basic food to eat. Now, years later, I don't need to do this but it has stuck with me and I still mostly only buy what I need rather than want. It can be boring but I know no debt collector is going to be knocking on my door.

All they will say is we did something. Bare minimum governing with zero empathy or compassion. Same across the board with everything. Health, education and crime. The lockdown party thing is a perfect representation of how they think. If they could party every day and do nothing they would. Help rich mates out in the process

I earn just shy of £40k basic and I'm starting to panic. I go to the likes of supermarkets where the staff are paid much less than me and I really do worry for people on benefits or lower wages being able to comfortably navigate this mess. Everything is going up, my monthly electric bill has increased about 300% with no change in my usage. Everyone wants more money for everything. Grocery prices are up and you can't buy anything because the shelves are bare. All sorts of fees and charges being added on, the basic price of things like Netflix, broadband, all going up. My car insurance premium is going up £75 for this coming policy year, despite an extra year of NCBs and my licence being clean. Petrol is roughly £1.60/litre in my area. House prices in my area are still respectable, but they are considerably up from where they were ten years ago. When I first moved here in 2012 there was a really crappy one-bed flat I saw on sale for £93k. It was back on the market in early 2021 and they're now wanting £135k for it, there is a tenant in situ paying £630pcm rent. Other flats in the same building were about £110k back then, now they can be as much as £175k. My council tax is also up. Started on £78pcm with 25% discount, it's now £105 for the same band. Council services have been cut right back, everything is underperforming and costing more. Meanwhile the modest investments I do have? They're basically being thrown around like ragdolls right now, all over the place. My dad is 66 years old and he is also very nervous. He says it reminds him too much of the 1970s and in his opinion is shaping up to be worse.

There are three securities every government has a fundamental duty to maintain: Food security (enough homegrown food). Energy security (enough independently generated electricity at least) Potable water security ( taken for granted in the UK). Despite the lessons learned in the past 100 years, we in Britain, are dependent on the French for energy and the rest of the world for food. The global warming (due to human activity) scam has cost us so dearly. We have 300 years of coal supplies under the ground in the UK that could power food security and energy security in a heartbeat. A by-product of cheap open cast mining would be additional water security too.

My council just dumped £150 in my bank account one day (I pay council tax via DD so they had that info), which I noticed a week later. Apparently it was a government payment to help with energy bills and was very poorly advertised. The comms were so poor that I didn't know what it was and only found out when I Googled the payee reference. Needless to say, I spotted it very late and chances are that £150 had already been spent on something else.

Its a bit sad somehow, but the EU as institution was created to prosper economies in its unity. The Euro was created to have a stable currency for that unity. Maybe the EU failed the UK or the other the way around. The idea of an united Europe was intended as a good thing for all its member states. Really sad.
