Cosplay Tutorial: How To Make A Cape

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm sorry this is so long but I wanted to make sure I covered everything in one video. I go over a few different types of capes, collars and way to attach them. If you have any questions please look through here first as someone may have asked it; other than ask, ask away!
********QUESTIONS********
HOW DO YOU FIGURE OUT THE RADIUS SO YOU CAN CUT THE NECK HOLE?
First take the circumference of your neck, as an example mine is 11 inches. The equation for finding the radius if you have the circumference is C/2(3.14). Essentially your equation will be C/6.28 or in the case of my neck 11/6.28. Easy! I always round up just to make sure I'm covered for any seam allowance or calculating errors.
HOW MUCH FABRIC DO YOU NEED TO MAKE A CAPE?
This varies from cape to cape but you do require a lot! Most of mine require at least four yards and keep in mind that those are half circle capes.
THEY DON'T MAKE FABRIC BIG ENOUGH FOR MY CIRCLE CAPE!
You'll probably have to make two half circles and sew them together. You can keep the two seams on the shoulders to make it less obvious.
WHAT FABRIC SHOULD I USE FOR MY CAPE? This depends on you, the original artwork and how you want it to flow. I've seen capes made from several different types of fabric including: cottons, rayon, linens, vinyls, broadcloth and fur. It really depends on you and what you want to make and what will compliment the rest of the costume.

Fantastic video and now I can make me a cape for kamina. Also you are very correct about the don't use hot glue on the thing that is holding up your cape. In architecture it's referred to as a keystone. That thing in the middle that's required. If it falls they all fall. Thanks again :)

So so helpful! I'm working on making Shredder's cape from 1987 tmnt cartoon. His cape does this interesting draping thing on the front of the neck and the cape sits on the shoulders. Just wondering if you had any ideas on how I would make the collar for it so it sits the way it is supposed to. I plan on making the front piece separate from the cape but I'm having issues trying to figure out how to attach the two pieces and attach it to myself.

  • @Tabloid319

My Shredder cape is in two parts. The front is draped, and sewn to the back so that the seam is on the under side of the cape. I sewed velcro to the seam allowance, and attached it to the shirt so it's held in place.

So, you got a new camera. What is it? I noticed that your videos keep looking better and better since you mentioned getting it. I assume you've just been tweaking its settings. Also, I feel inclined to tell you that you look strikingly similar to Daenerys Targaryen from the HBO series Game of Thrones.

Haaii there~ I'm thinking about making the costume of Frederico from Wonderland Online (The game isn't that popular but I really like the character. Also i don't think I'm allowed to link anything here, or so I remember, so if you don't mind googling for him? ^^" ) I was thinking of making the cape out of velvet and doubling it up with the material i'm going to make the rest of the costume out of? I don't really know if it'd work so I'm looking for an opinion here ^^"
