I appreciate that you included the baked version of the colors, and never would have thought of making a book to document color combos! I don't really use clay, so I hadn't even thought of doing a stress test. Also had no idea that you could mix powdered pigments in with clay - I assumed it would mess with the clay somehow

Great review! Really appreciate the depth and testing that went into this video. I've been looking into branching out of my usual Premo and Sculpey for "bulkier" clay buys and this video gives a great range of considerations. Agree that the saturation should be bumped up a bit, this was one of my major concerns when searching for new brands, but excited to see that the pigments might help with that.

I never liked premo. Even when it came to just regular sculpting it was still hard to use because it broke so easily. When it came to regularly sculpt, I used sculpy baish (sorry I can’t spell today lol) and it worked beautifully but even though it stayed together well and painted well I only recommend it if your only sculpting models that you aren’t going to move around at all. Recently, my sister tried the cosclay and omg, it was amazingly flexible and durable! I highly recommend this clay if your looking forward to sculpting something that would normally be very fragile by useing other materials. Also, sculpy is definitely a go to kind of clay, it’s a really nice clay, but it can’t be thrown around or anything like cosclay can. It is a great clay and I personally think it’s the best kind of clay to use if you want the clay to not be indestructible. Highly recommend it

I am very impressed with CosClay as well. I had previously used Sculpey Medium Blend for figures, but even just sitting on the bench, they still manage to break if bumped. I don't have that problem with CosClay, even if I let my kids play with the finished sculpt.

It's a large piece so I wanted to try something different. But this morning I have noticed some cracks in it. I am not sure how strong it is. But I will have a video of the sculpt I am attempting in a month or so ♥

I heard monster clay is worth a try, all you need is to melt the clay to soften it and it hardens while it cools

I wish they would send me some clay, but I don't think they liked how honest I was about some of the colours 🙂.

Cosclay is awesome when cooked because of how flexible it is. However, I find it hard to work with since it's so soft. I prefer firmer clay (e.g. kato clay) since I can hadle my figures when sculpting without squishing my previous work. I guess I'll have to pre bake more.

The Cosclay from the Kickstarter was actually really firm (which I love). I love Kato clay too, because it's so firm. I believe the clay they brought out after the Kickstarter was way too soft and then they added a firm line (I think). I am still using the Kickstarter clay. If the cosclay you have is to soft you can press it between 2 sheets of paper to leech out some of the oils. Good luck, hope you get some use out of the clay you already have.

Ahhh yes, that makes sense. It's a shame they don't have firm in the colors, because I really like the flexibility.

thanks for the excellent analysis. I'd like to ask if you've tried sealing the paint? I'm painting using vallejo paints and sealing with vallejo polyurethane seals. I sculpted a sort of action figure sculpture, but moving around parts (clay on clay abrasion) tends to remove the paint even after multiple 2-3 coats and a day of curing. It's a real shame because this is excellent for movable sculpts. Thanks in advance :)

Really great question. So for me, I only usually use a sealer (Water based Polyurethane Gloss from the hardware store.) On eyes and fingernails or claws, just to add extra shine. I see what you mean about clay on clay, rubbing off paint. That is a real shame. I have never used it, but maybe a UV cure resin or a 2 part epoxy gloss coating might be an option. I have heard that those give a really hard coating. Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you.

Hi, this video is fantastic! I have a question about painting grey cosclay with acrylics?....have you had any experience with acrylic paints remaining slightly tacky/easily scratched after drying? I also use "cheap acrylic paints" (lol) which is why I am asking you!! I have completed four projects to date- two in grey medium firm and two in doll beige. All painted with 2-3 coats of acrylic paint, different color blends, each coat was given time to cure, and it was mixed well before painting. Each time the finished result feels slightly tacky to the touch and I can easily scratch it with a fingernail. I'm hoping at some point to be able to sell sculptures but I want them to be durable before I sell any! And I've read so much about not using certain types of clear sealers on polymer clay, but I'm not sure if they will work on acrylic paint painted over polymer clay (lol). I am ordering some of the Cosclay liquid sealer as soon as I get paid but in the meantime I am wondering if you have had the same experience with your acrylic paints and if so, do you have any suggestions on how to fix it? Hello Forest. I am so glad the video was useful to you. That is a great question and definitely something I experienced when starting out. So, a couple of things can cause tacky paint on cured clay. Always make sure that the clay has been correctly baked (especially larger figures). If the clay is not cured in the center of the figure, the uncured clay will leach and cause paint to not stick. Another reason for paint being tacky can be surface oils. I smooth down my sculptures with baby oil, before baking. But it is important to give the sculpture a soapy bath after it has cooled right down after baking. I do this even if I haven't used baby oil on the sculpt. If you do those 2 things, that should completely fix the tacky paint issue. I then give my sculptures an undercoat (this is optional). I use PVA glue (Wood glue) because it is cheap. An undercoat really helps cheaper acrylic paints to go on thicker. As for clear sealers. Yes, you are correct. You do need to be careful with what kind you use. Be sure to get a water based clear coat. I use a water based polyurethane gloss from the hardware store. It is cheaper than craft stores and it comes in larger tins. I am still using the same tin I bought several years ago.

What time did you bake these tests? Sorry if you said in the video and I missed it (As that does effect the strength of the clay of course, not sure about baking times and cosclay flex though)

Both Cosclay and Sculpey have the exact same baking time and temperature. 30 minutes at 275 degrees fahrenheit. I always preheat my oven and use an oven thermometer. All creations do not enter the oven until the temperature has been reached. The temperature that it is in for , is far more important than the time it has been backed for. You can keep putting a sculpt in the oven as many times as you like. But you never want to have the temperature too low or too high.

How is the process of baking this clay? What do I need to do it?

Hello Diego. Thanks for the question. The CosClay package instructions say "Bake for 30 minutes at 275 degrees Fahrenheit (135 degrees Celsius) per 1/4 inch (6mm). " I always use a oven thermometer so I can check the temperature accurately. And once I notice it has finally reached the appropriate temperature I then reset the timer for at least 30 minutes. Then I leave the creation in the oven until it completely cools down naturally. Hope this helps.

If I were to buy this clay, is it also designed for smaller keyring sized creations and would it hold up? I've never had experience with clay making before so having some knowledge would help.

Yes. It would be perfect for things like key chain charms. I often sculpt smaller things like the Crash Bandicoot charms or Tiny Tina charms (from my previous videos). But I am always worried about them breaking if they get knocked around. But this new CosClay seems perfect for these kinds of uses. I have only been using if for about a month, but I am really impressed with it's strength and flexibility.

The Kickstarter version that I have is very stiff. I do believe that they have a softer option now. Sculpey III is very soft and a lot of people with sore hands like it. Mont Marte is also quite soft, but I find it to be a bit tacky as well. Good luck finding a clay you are comfortable working with.

So cos clay is the best?

My goal isn't to tell people what is the best 🙂. It's to hopefully give everyone a good look at the product and let them decide for them self ♥. We all have different requirements that we look for with our clay's. So what I might consider to be best, someone else might not. 👍

Oh no. That is terrible. I sometimes find if I'm in a rush and didn't soften it up enough before sculpting, it can break. I try to always condition the clay as much as possible. Good luck and I hope it works out for you.
