Economic classes needs to teach people the way Cliff taught Theo in this scene. This scene is priceless. Hard to believe that this was 1984. In spite of what has happened to Bill Cosby, I still love the Cosby Show. Still one of the greatest shows ever on television.

In 4 minutes they were able to capture the essence of how life is for most "regular people" that aren't a politician, or celebrity. The show reached all nationalities, races etc etc in viewers.

I love the way Bill Cosby handled the situation. instead of doing what some parents do, yelling at your children about bad grades he sat down and gave his son a really good life lesson. very creative.

Vince McMahon said that to his son Shane during one of their occasional dust ups, too. He didn't acknowledge Cosby by name, but the audience knew whom he was quoting.
This is the Bill Cosby that I still miss. Growing up in the 80s, next to James Avery (RIP), and John Amos, Mr. Cosby was the father that any kid would love to have. Despite the trouble he has endured, I still love this show.

I love the “Cosby Show,” but I just can’t look at Bill Cosby the same way I did before. I still have trouble trying to separate my love of his comedy from my feelings of disappointment related to his actions in real life.

@@aminsadeghpour1549, well Theo started out terrible, but he got way better and by the time Season 3 or 4 came, his grades were a lot better. Denise should have done the same thing. Started out terrible or not done as well. Then in college she wouldn’t have stuggled so much. Theo graduated from NYU.

@@derekmathews1818 They replayed this scene in the final episode; Theo was frustrated with his father because Cliff wanted to invite more and more friends and relatives to Theo's graduation ceremony, and Theo couldn't get any more tickets. After the flashback, Claire explained to Theo why Cliff couldn't contain himself; he was just bursting with so much pride in his son. I loved that moment.
30 years ago today, which was a Thursday in 1984...now I feel old!!! This lesson resonates now more than it ever did in 1984.

I don't give a f**k about what they say about Cosby. He was one of the best comedians of all time, and not just because of the nature of his humor, but because he didn't take the all-too-easy route of peppering his jokes with swearing and vulgarity. Old-school stuff? Sure, but a sign of natural, absolute talent. Glad he's FREE! LL

I make around $1600 after taxes, rent is $540 (don't ask me why it's so low), and I get along just fine.
This was my favorite scene when I was a kid. Watched the Cosby show every single night on Nick at night for years.
i was little when this came out, and it was funny, and when i became an adult an experienced going broke all the time like that, this always stuck with me.

I did an inflation calculator check today and 1,200 in 1984 is about 3,375.89 before taxes. And even that isn't much today.

1984 was SUCH A GOOD YEAR.
Looking at the scene has great to realize that Co actually graduated from NYU despite having dyslexia he became successful even with grades like this
I was immediately reminded of this episode when my best friend was telling me tonight that one of her sons (who is only 17 and currently only works one day per week) wanted to get an apartment in a really bad part of town that costs $1000 per month plus utilities and would be moving in with his brand new 18-year-old girlfriend who he hasn't even known for a month and who also only works part-time. I sent her the link to this video to show him. 😂

I wish apartments in Manhattan still cost 400$ a month. This scene was filmed 40 years ago and I can still remember the entire scene today.
Cliff tells Theo that Theo will get $1,200 a month and then $350 will be deducted for taxes. About 30% is deducted from your paycheck for taxes. Cliff explains that the government comes for the regular people first. My girlfriend is an accountant and she says that's very true. Rich people have tax protection plans and poor people hardly have any money to take so the regular people are the ones the government goes after first.

Most "poor people" don't pay any taxes, period. In fact, they get money back from the government in the form of earned income tax credits. The one's really getting screwed are the middle class as both the Republicans and Democrats use them as patsies for their own self-interests.

$2100 a month here. With the deductions I claimed, I only pay around $50 for federal and $40 for state. I got a bigger paycheck, and the government got a smaller interest free loan.

It's sad that this still rings true. If you lack a above-average, coveted skill of some sort, you're stuck working a menial job with no room for error.
