Corrugated Pipe 101 - The French Drain Man Sets the Record Straight

Today we're going to set the record straight on corrugated pipe. For years and years, I've been seeing this picture shared. Now I understand that the public and the average homeowner doesn't know the difference between the pipes. They hear a couple of things and then they start sharing it and I love getting on these multimedia sites and having a lot of fun seeing what you guys put together. It really entertaining at times, but uh, in truth you guys come up with some, some really, really cool stuff and somebody needs to address this here because nothing could be more misleading and nothing could be further from the truth. So let's go over corrugated pipe. The 101 of corrugated pipe. Let's go through it.
Oh, okay. So here is a skid of 20-foot lengths of corrugated pipe. Wait a minute, wait a minute. I mean, according to that picture and, and what I read, they're always criticizing the pipe because debris gets caught in the riffles, valleys, ridges that these pipes have. This is a dual wall and nobody is talking about it. Nobody. So I figured it's time that somebody sheds a little bit of light on it.
If it's smooth wall you want. And if you want the structural strength, you need the crush rating, you just go up to a dual wall. So this is in just about every size you can think of. We have it in four, four-inch, six-inch, eight-inch, 10-inch. It also comes in, perforated. This here is solid.
So, I know the next thing that you're going to wonder is, okay, so it's stronger, but is it a strongest PVC pipe?
I parked my one-ton truck up on this 20 footer and it's a section of dual wall and the wife called me and needed me up at the house and I got sidetracked a little bit long story. This truck spending up on top of this piece here for about three hours. When I get done with this video, I think I'm going to change my oil. You can see it's holding the truck up just fine. The front of the truck has the engine in it, so there is a lot of weight on that pipe. That pipe is holding its own, that's for sure. So you can see the tires buckled.
All right, so let's move on. So now we took care of that problem. You know if you want a pipe that's smooth wall. Corrugated pipe does come and smooth wall.
Now there's a lot of different pipes available and I think that's where we lose the average homeowner, the average consumer. So let's just go over it real quick.
The picture shows a green stripe on that pipe. Well, that's the trademark for ADS. Advanced Drainage Systems makes a fine product. There's nothing wrong with it. @vzgsxr He uses kitchen trash cans and storage bins for sump pump basins and shows it like he did something great. Dude is misleading and a crook. To take homeowners hard earned money and not use good materials!! Just a joke

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN I'm in Australia and was researching French drain systems as I need to install one around my new home. I'm in construction (a carpenter 20+ years) I've done a little drainage work in my time but nothing of the scale that my French drain will be (approximately 120ft) - so obviously I want to do it right the first time. I think I've watched all of your videos. I also watched a few of 🍎's. It's pretty evident to me who is doing it the more effective way, not only with the drain itself. But also with the care taken in the homeowners yard using plywood etc. I will be copying you exact system for my drainage system. Keep up the great work. 👍

I’m glad I stumbled across your videos. I’m about to hire out my roof runoff drainage system job and I have had so many of my misconceptions changed. I now know what I need. I’m going through company websites and looking at pictures of their work and reading their explanations. I’d have hired half the crews I’ve just crossed off if I didn’t receive an FDMU education. I’ve said it before, it’s disappointing you personally berated other contractors.. but I will gladly say that ‘your the man’ when it comes to clear advice and guidance and that I really do appreciate. Great team snd great work done by your team. I shall be putting your advice to great use on resolving a severe flooded garden, that flooded my workshop her in the UK. @@daibonehead hi…. Yes I did. FDM info is top notch. I followed the principles and 100% resolved 2 severely flooded clay soil gardens. One had been unusable for over 5 years. I have a photo libiary from start to finish. So yes… I’m totally a supporter of FDM and his methods, which are super simple. The genius is the use of a horizontal sum and larger size stone. If I could share the photos I would….👍👍

@@daibonehead if your planning a project, I’m very happy to tell you what I did here in the UK by following FDMs faultless principles… even though I say so my self, the results are truly amazing. I take no credit for the design ( that is 100% FDM) but I do take credit for the graft I put in… PM me if you wish to discuss…👍. I forgot to say… I’m not a contractor, I’m just a DIY guy. I had been given the use of a elderly friends garage but was horrified to find that her garden and next door, totally flooded. So it HAD to be resolved… FDM (principles) to the rescue…💪💪💪

I wanted to know how deep to dig a French drain. I found a video where a guy dug a hole with a post hole digger and it filled up with water. His conclusion was that he "relieved the pressure" that was holding the water down. It seemed to me that the water was coming into the hole from the sides not the bottom. What is the physics on that?

The dual wall is perfect for my project but I don't know if I should do one 6 inch or two 4 inch pipes. It's a small access road that needs to hold dump truck traffic with gravel loads. I guess one 4 inch will move plenty of water but I was looking to improve reliability in case one clogged or a flood came. Great video! Thanks!

I'm looking for terracotta pipe to make an open drain (1/2 cut) down a small bank in my front yard. I get a gully between a flower bed & the top of a granite wall. Plastic may work, but I don't want it shift from light weight & also get a mower over it. Will this pipe work for that?

Besides Home Depot, what's a good option to try in Michigan area? Most of the Home Depots don't even carry any in stock. I just finished digging the drains and I'm having a hard time finding quality pipe.

I plan to bury 4" single wall corrugated perforated pipe, 8 feet deep and push air through it as part of a greenhouse temperature stabilization (geo thermal) project. Will soil enter the perforations (1/16" slots) and plug the pipe? Put another way, if you bury slotted pipe will it plug? In searching for this answer I've learned much about french drains from your videos.

I understand. This will only work with solid pipe otherwise it will fill will ground water. How will you push air through the pipe? 8ft deep will work I have deep crock wells that do not freeze.

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN I'm in Western Nebraska. Ground water will not be an issue. My submersible wells are 300 - 350 ft deep and we have the pumps down to 285 ft. Also rather dry, avg annual rainfall is 19". My only concern is the slots eventually filling with our loam/clayish soil. Most use perforated pipe to avoid condensation issues in summer when you push the warm air into the 55 degree underground pipe. To answer your question, the air is pushed through pipe with large squirrel cage fan sitting on a box above where pipes come out of ground. I will have 15 of these pipes buried together 8ft deep. Were it not for potential problem of condensation eventually building up and filling pipe with water, I'd go solid.

You start out by addressing that videos talk about grooved inside catching dirt inside and you show the solid inside one. Then you go on to show all the groves ones including the yellow one you use. You never answered the question about groves pipes catching more debris than smooth (assuming both are installed the same way.

That's the thing, people get stock on telling the lie. And they don't like admitting they're wrong. And they don't want to change. As you said, they literally have the option to say "ah well technology has came out with something", but they won't. People just get set in their ways.
Everybody I talk to just wants to sale the basement gutter system(box system or water guard)in my basement. Its really annoying because I have to keep explaining to these guy why the shit doesn't work. especially if the installer starts talking about putting a vapor barrier on your wall as a must I can't trust them. I'm going with the corrugated.
All that is nice to say about double wall but the average homeowner does not want to pay for the double wall. Also they don’t want to put forth the effort to install double or single wall corregated pipe correctly.

True corrugated pipe and not speaking of double wall that had a smooth wall on the inside I’m talking about corrugated pipe that is corrugated on the inside as well catches debris don’t care what this man says or anybody else. I own a business myself as well and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to dig up pipes for customers and they are completely stopped up with decayed leaves and other debris causing back up and sometimes major flooding.

How are you getting debris as large as leaves on the inside of your pipe? If they are installed correctly, there is no possibility for leaves to get inside the pipe as the drainage geo fabric wraps the pipe and gravel allowing only water to pass through into the pipe.

@@bpmiller87 It is getting in via the gutter. I thought my system was protected by the screens over the gutter, but there is a open space at the end and somehow a lot of stuff gets in anyway. Maybe not all screens have this bowed shape, maybe flat screens would not do this. I did not realize it, and now have stopped up underground corrugated pipes. It amazed me how much got in. Lot of trees in the neighborhood and my yard.

@@lou-nc4rc If you watch his videos, there is NO connection between roof /leader water and french drain water. They are two different systems.
