Corrosives also known as caustics are a group of chemicals or substances that have the
capacity to cause tissue injury on contact by a chemical reaction. They are commonly defined as the substances that can eat away. They most commonly involve the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), respiratory system and eyes. Acids and alkalis are the two primary types of agents most often responsible for corrosive poisoning. Exposure to caustics can affect both adults and children. The exposure may be accidental or intentional. Its morbidity is more than 50% and the mortality is around 13%. Around 80% of corrosive poisoning occurs in children below five years. But, adults, in general, have more morbidity & mortality due to significant
volume of exposure and possible co-ingestion.
