Correct standing technique on a dirt bike | THE ATTACK POSITION

FIXING MY TECHNIQUE IN ORDER TO HELP YOU FIX YOURS
I want to help you guys learn how to ride your dirt bike correctly while working on my own technique in the meantime. Technique for motocross is a huge deal and will help you increase all of your skills on a dirt bike. When you are standing up your riding position should be in what is called the attack position. The motocross attack position is the foundation of motocross technique and as a beginner should be the first thing that you learn.
My technique on a dirt bike used to be amazing, and it seems as I have gotten faster and bigger on a dirt bike, it has gotten worse. So I decided that the first thing that I am going to work on is my attack position. This is the foundation for standing up on a dirt bike, everything evolves from it. So for the rest of my time riding this Honda CRF450R, that is what I am going to work on.
I hope you learned something from this! And if there is anything else you want motocross training or motocross tips wise, let me know in the comments below!

Being so honest about your riding flaws while you are much better than most of us is a great reminder of how important it is to keep it real and have some modesty if we want to improve. The explanation was great. Subscribed.

Bro I know this vid is a few years old now but I’d LOVE to see more technique vids. I get the attack position in theory and can happily ride in a straight line in the attack position but once you add corners, hills - up and down, breaking/acceleration bumps etc it all goes to crap! I swear I feel like I’m in the attack position and then I film myself and realise when I watch it back I’m not even CLOSE! ARGH its so frustrating and difficult for me to get this …trying to break years of bad habits is very challenging!

Good points. Squeeze tank until fuel flows out of the vent line.......that is correct amount of force required to hold onto bike. Result, no more arm pump.

This was great. Knees behind your toes is a matter of saving your knees. Physically if you keep going past your toes your going to need a knee replacement eventually.

I was very lucky to have good body for corners an i ve mastered starts...but jumping i had to work hard...fortunately i had 10 years supercross an outdoor MX to study an really focused on the jumping of McGrath....once i learned the big jump mistakes that we all. Make...dude im gonna send u my patient start 5 step program an please try it an tell me how u liked it...i really ride super good standing up....i skate vert half pipes when i was 11...an now 40 years later i have learn to skate a ten foot kidney pool here in town an 30 miles away there a 14 foot giant pool...but my standing technic is super i used to ride 70 hours a week once school got out an 35 hours when school was in....i can could rail burns tear grips off both bars...yeah that a weird body position crouched down an forward..has one draw back right away ur arms arent in a strong safe position...oh god i be scared to see u hit a big braking bump on an into a rough corner with all that weight so far forward...i crinch...dang u got to the pros....thats takes work though....

I would really reccomend Gary Semics MX videos for a baseline body position upgrade...hes got videos ready Dvds ready to buy...an stuff on u tube...a lot of slow mo stuff is really helpfull its hard today to learn the guys go so fast ...slow motion is the only way i had super slow mo its like click click frame by frame i can see all the things a rider is doing one inch at a time...on video slow mo...Gary Semics has a lot of those ready just go on line an buy a couple...the one thing about us older riders i learned how to ride motocross with 6 inches of fork an shock travel...do i really use my legs an my body more than modern riders who have real tall travel forks an shocks..like 4 inches more then the factory Honda bikes had in 1996...the bikes are much taller an ride taller...

Great video. I struggle with this. My seat, boots, graphics, pants barely have marks on them. I think I'm squeezing the bike with my legs and then I see all the evidence that I'm not. I bought a wider wing seat to see if that is something that will assist me. Also, to your point about pointing your toes in a little will bring your knees closer in, I find I am a person that walks very duck footed and I suspect I ride toes out a lot which doesn't help my cause. I recall riding a bike that the pegs were slightly angled upward (don't recall the peg brand) and I remember that my knees were much closer to the bike.

Hey! Thank you for your video! Could you explain more about foot position? From one side I've been told to cover the break but I have to put pegs under the middle of my foot just before the heel so the joint doesn't work at all. From other side if I want to use foot joint then I should put the finger pads to the pegs then I can't touch the break. (I have standard complection and height of 180 cm.) Any advices?

I grew up in Michigan where a bike will hook up and get traction anywhere. Now that I'm in AZ I'm learning to ride on desert hard pack. I'm finding that weighting the pegs is important here. Can you cover that a bit? Should I be pushing straight down on the outside peg? Or trying to push down and into the bike at the same time? Also should I be taking weight off the inside peg so I can push harder into the outside peg? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

First race lap is good attack position then i just fade out. Is it something you practice at 80% and keep form or a fitness thing on your hips. Thanks

I'm in the same boat and I think there's multiple ways to go about it. Riding at 80% to really set that technique in is a great way to do it. What I'm also doing is when I'm practicing, no matter how tired I am, I am just trying to always say to myself to ride correctly. Even if it's just 2 times on the whole track, eventually it will be the entire time. Hopefully that makes sense haha

First off I'm not a pro rider. Take my advice with a grain of salt. Like Tyler said 80% laps with proper technique will help create correct muscle memory. If you struggle to get seat time like I do, other exercises can be used to strengthen those muscles. Squats, lunges, deadlift, good mornings, sit ups, shoulder press, pull ups, and shoulder flys. All of these work the same muscles you use to ride. Big muscle groups and shoulders. Good luck!

Everything is fine, how you stand on the balls on your feet, the hips etc. But what could be interesting to see is how you move your feet when shifting gear and breaking.

I feel like maintaining a proper attack position is a little bit harder for us tall guys. Specifically from the hips up.. I’m 6’3 and have long arms so a lot of the time it feels awkward to hinge enough at the hips to where my chest and head are in the proper position so I always end up standing up too high and I don’t always notice it unless I watch some footage of myself..

Hi Tyler, I am 1.91m tall and heavy...like 120kg. So I have the suspension sorted, but every time I try and stand it feels like the bike is getting away from me when I brake or accelerate. I battel to grab or squeeze the bike with my knees as my knees is way above the seat. I mostly ride technical and should be standing. Do you have any advice? Stegpegs?.....?
