Coronavirus: Is Britain Ready? | Documentary

Brighton, home to the UK's first cluster of Coronavirus cases, is feeling the pressure. With schools, doctors surgeries and individual residents taking precautions - there are many urgent questions swirling.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
How deadly is it? How fast can it spread? What are the best precautions? Will we end up responding to it the way China has done? And how prepared are we in Britain?
In an exclusive survey for tonight's special programme on the response to the emerging cases in the UK, 'Coronavirus: Is Britain Ready?' Channel 4 News carried out an exclusive survey of over 500 front-line health workers.

The UK plans for this are the same as for everything else. Stage 1: Trivialise. "We don't think that this will be a major issue. There is scare-mongering in the media, and there is no cause for alarm." Stage 2: Acknowledge and downplay. "We would ask people to exercise caution, and act responsibly." Stage 3: Excuse themselves / Blame others. "It was impossible to predict the path of this virus. Had the public only acted responsibly. Or, the budget cuts were the cause. " Stage 4: Fatalism / Resignation. "We have learnt valuable lessons, which . . . "

yeah, pretty much on point there, mate.. sitting here watching all this unfold knowing full well they will down play this. I'm actually disgusted that we allowed the first case to appear in the UK, and that we didn't stop travel and close borders immediately. Yeah the economy would suffer for a couple of weeks, but better that than have a total economic meltdown for a few years while we try to recover from the devastating consequences of trying to protect the financial industry over the human population.. Shame on us.. 💔

No travel shutdown will stop it, imho. It helps to slow the spread sure. Mitigation is necessary. In the US here and waiting for the govt to start ramping up hospitals and infrastructure to treat many severe cases. I'll do basic hygiene as discussed but I'm certainly not counting on it working so I'm reducing risk factors. I have a superb diet already and that's got hypertension under control, which is a risk factor. There are more ways to get the body ready: Good sleep nightly reduces the chance to be infected by some viruses by 80%. Vitamin D is associated with better immune system function. Quitting smoking helps greatly. Exercise also improves the body's defenses. So much to do that can help!

They’re right about this. I’m an ICU nurse in the US. My town has around 27,000 people, with many more folks living in the larger surrounding area. Based on current estimates, if the. Coronavirus spreads here there would be around 160 more people than normal who need critical care in an ICU (with many more times that number needing hospitalization). (60-70% infection rate of the town’s population. With 12-15% of them requiring hospital care, and 5% of the hospitalized requiring ICU care) If you added up ALL the ICU beds at my hospital (which is a large academic medical center) you’d have perhaps 100 ICU spaces. Only1/3rd of those rooms are equipped for “negative airway” isolation to prevent the spread of airborne illness. The rest are regular ICU rooms that open directly onto the hallway. If we HAD to, there are 3 stepdown (non-icu) units that could be converted to ICUs (they have the same “floor plan”). That would give you another 60 icu beds...but you wouldn’t have any ICU trained nurses or doctors or respiratory therapists to staff them. And where would the needed extra ventilators come from? Where would the patients who are already in the hospital go to make room for Coronavirus patients? Bottom line...at my hospital if you “kicked” out all of the current ICU and stepdown patients and then converted 3 units into ICUs you’d MAYBE have enough space to house the local Coronavirus patients who would need ICU care. But remember, only 1/3 of this rooms are actually equipped for airborne illness...which means it might be difficult to prevent spread within the hospital And it’s not as if people are suddenly going to stop having heart attacks, strokes, and car crashes just because there’s a Coronavirus outbreak.... Unless the US military has some contingency plans in place to build a LOT of field hospitals on short notice, I don’t know where we’d put so many Coronavirus patients if this thing spread widely. Just because the vast majority of people DON’T (thankfully) have severe symptoms doesn’t mean that our health services won’t become overwhelmed trying to help the people who DO become very dangerously ill.

LOTS OF IMPORTANT THINGS NOT ADDRESSED IN THIS DOCUMENTARY: 1. SARS-Cov2 spreads asymptomatically - people are walking around with it and spreading it without even knowing they have it. 2. Sars-Cov2 doesn't just spread though air droplets, but also spreads through aerosol transmission, and thus is much more transmissable than if it was merely spread through droplet infection (you don't have to only be 2 metres away from someone) 3. SARS-Cov2 has a long incubation period of 5-14 days and maybe even be up to 24 days! 4. A sudden unmasking of asymptomatic individuals, and sudden influx of severe cases presenting pneumonia would be disastrous for hospitals. Their WON'T be enough ICUs or oxygen supplies to provide them with adequate care.

Of course Countries many are ready. So far is not a pandemic out side of China. It would be considered a pandemic when people might start dying in hundreds or thousands. By catastrophysing when we are not even close at this. We need to be careful not make people get in real paranoya. Drs are Learning more and more. Unfortunately it happened in a time of big holidays. I don't see this virus spreading drastically in Europe. There many Countries that not don't have not even case. Like Latin America and others. So far is like theory probability meaning it might happen or not . Predicting is very hard even from super experts. It helps for making plans and development. I don't see becoming an dangerous pandemic. We need be rational. By panicking does not help. And some of the media aee not helping. With out having tangible statistics and using words like: we all going to died. It won't happen. I have been commenting about the 1918 influenza for a while. From history the the 1918 (by the way) the first has been mentioned. The worst pandemic in whole history was in 1918. virus occurred in America. Originated in Kansas, the government was to blame for acting sooner. It killed about 50 million to died and 500 million infected. This wont happen since then health study wore not prepared for it. The vaccine was created in 1930. The most healthy wore dying. The masks do work other wise there death there would a horrific issue. The virus is hear all we should help by helping sending need it supply to China. I joined a Chinese church that are working hard to send China pakegines to help by donating money. I donated 400 $. Those who can't donate 2$ that can result in millions. By doing that we help each other. Many Chinese organization and other Countries are donating what they can. RussIa had help. let's humanity ckiking and help. I have no doubt this virus will pass. And Chinese drs are sacrephing their lifes to help. The world health organization are sending specialist are send to help and come up solutions. Also it won't be like the black plague occurred in Europe. And people wore closed in there houses to diy and putting crosses on their doors. Viruses don't discriminate. At those difficult time. It didn't not spread to other Countries. It also depends on humans dnya. Many when infected did not die. Same is today some dnya system because they have such DNA don't die. I pray every day. I don't fear helping the Chinese organization outside China by helping them even I'm risking my life. Human beings reaction diffently. And I understand since people I afraid of death. I honestly don't. No news reported that 36,000 American diy yearly fru, influenza. My friend died this way. Even with flue shots 1,000 million died from mosquitoes, aides. And there still are being discriminate. yearly in America die . But we got used to it And don't pay attention. Please let's get together and help. And stop the zinophobia that innocent Chinese people don't deserve. I read some comments that make me sick. Because luck of knowledge(ignorance). I almost lost my life when I was 21 one. And would do it again. Please share if one has companion and understanding.

The British Government should of banned all flights into the UK, from Asian countries, when the virus was first detected, doesn't matter if you are a British national, no one allowed in from Asian countries, until a vaccine has been produced, but the British Government didn't do this, they let people into Britain who are infected with the virus, which now puts the British people lives at risk, as the virus is highly contagious, as you can see, its now spreading here in the UK, and there is no signs of it slowing down, how can it slow down?, it spreads so easily to anyone, and there is no vaccine at present.

It is actually a replay of the Spanish Flu outbreak in 1918. There was censorship in the war zone so none but the governments involved knew what was going on with the disease. The public didn't know until it broke out in Spain and killed millions. Then tens of thousands of soldiers were shipped home to various countries bringing the virus with them and their governments allowed it to happen. The upshot was between 50 to 100 million people died as a result.

@@vestelle7283 I live in a capital city in the U.S. The hospital is 3 blocks from my house. When I broke my wrist I walked there. At midnight In June I heard my son in the next room breathing funny. Then I heard him take a weird long breathe and I ran into his room. I could not hear him breathe so I call 911-emergencey here. I knew CPR somewhat from a class. I had to pull my son off the bed and give him chest compressions for 15 minutes while I waited for the ambulance. I was exhausted and freaked out of course. No country's ambulance or fire fighter's is perfect. They are understaffed and many times are volunteers. But 2 hours is way too long. My mother-in-law lives in assisted living. If someone falls or faints there the staff is not allowed to touch them. They have to wait for an ambulance. This is a little ridiculous I think. If someone quits breathing and you do nothing then 15 minutes means ..death probably. What if someone chokes? I would jump in myself. I saved my little brother when I was 10. He swallowed a big gum ball and was turning blue. My mother was hysterical. I picked him up and shook him upside down and it popped out. The next day I could not pick him up that way. He was too heavy. Adrenaline and necessity is amazing.

Those figures are SEVERELY underestimated. Last time I checked 24,458 people had died in China due to the outbreak as of February 1st. You think you'd learn anything close to that by watching mainstream news?

It is not true that all masks are useless. A properly fitted, in-date P3 disposable mask will work for up to 8 hours with about 5% leakage. Disposable P3 masks usually filter to about .3 microns, whilst these viruses are about .01 individually, but masks and air filters work on diffusion, not as a net, so they actually catch particles far smaller than .3 microns, not to mention that viruses clump together. Masks are also not there solely for the protection of the wearer, they also protect those around them, although masks with breathers are of less use in this regard. Masks are obviously not a silver bullet, but they do offer protection, especially when used in conjunction with other protections - hand washing, goggles etc, and when disposed of correctly.

Remember to wipe the pen down with an alcohol wipe periodically too. Wipe your mobile phone down with an alcohol wipe whenever you wash your hands. In fact, someone might think they’re getting sick, not have the virus, and then go to a hospital around a bunch of sick people, and then unintentionally catch it. Panic at small symptoms is foolish and only risks others when those people go out and seek medical care when all they need is a box of tissues and some DayQuil.

I wish someone would tell us how to know if you have this thing ,,!! I've been sick for ten days now . Mostly chest congestion !! I'm afraid to go out or go to Dr. Office !! What am I to think !?? I don't go anywhere anyway . I've been house bond forever ..I have been down with CHRONIC PAIN disability from several problems usually just go out for my trip month check up !! So I didn't know how I could pick up anything ...? I have two kids, teens , they go to school , but they haven't been sick .. well the boy was sick a few weeks back , but that was way before this thing came up !?? I just don't know what to do ???
