Me here in May 2024 in Malaysia. When living in England never watched corrie as a child and teen, but now I'm binge watching cos I miss England a bit

Yes, Eddie Yeats was wonderful, and became a Corrie icon and a national treasure during his relatively short Corrie residency. The producers had big plans for Eddie's long-term future. After he married florist Marion Willis, they intended to give the new couple the ultimate accolade - their own home in the Street. But actor Geoffrey Hughes stunned producer Bill Podmore by announcing his plans to leave the Street for good in late 1983. He wasn't happy with the direction the character took, as a respectable married man. He felt Eddie should have remained a bachelor and a chancer type. But I sense the main reason was the actor's itchy feet. Some actors, like William Roache who has played Ken Barlow since The Street's 1960 launch show (@ 2023, a record-breaking 63 years), is clearly one who loves the regular routine of working on a long-running soap, and never wanted to leave. In contrast, Geoffrey craved the challenge of pastures new, and probably the freedom too. Being a main character on a soap is a big tie, and I believe at that time he had taken on the running of a small farm and craft centre in Northamptonshire with his wife Sue - which obviously needed time spent on it. Bill Podmore told Geoffrey Hughes he could pretty much name his price, he was so keen to keep Eddie Yeats in the show. 1983 - '84 was a rocky time for Corrie, as coincidentally so many big gun characters departed for good at that same time, for various reasons, including Annie Walker, Elsie Tanner, Len Fairclough, Stan Ogden, Albert Tatlock and Bert Tilsley. But Geoffrey would not be persuaded even by big money, and after 9 years as Eddie Yeats, off he went, making his final, full-time appearance on December 7th 1983. Corrie continued to beg Geoffrey to return over the years, their cheque book wide open. But he declined, aside from Eddie's brief, surprise return in 1987 (his final ever appearance was 2nd December 1987, after 511 episodes), which the actor did only for a final Street reunion with his old friend Jean Alexander, retiring as legendary Hilda Ogden on Christmas Day. In the ensuing decades he enjoyed popular starring roles in successful TV series 'Heartbeat', 'Keeping Up Appearances' and 'The Royle Family'. In later years Geoffrey and his wife settled on the Isle of Wight, where they ran a wood supply company. In 2009 he was appointed Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the island. Sadly he died of a recurrence of prostate cancer on 27th July 2012, aged 68. A wonderful and much-loved actor, a true star, and by all accounts a truly lovely human being, he lives on through his superb work and umpteen happy memories.

I was 3 in 1978 but LOVE this period of the show!!! Such wonderful characters, brilliant comedy and top storylines. Really wish new Corrie would go back to basics!

Stan, Eddie and Hilda my favourites a great story line with the cart. Thanks again for the uploads.

LOL" Annie's face was priceless when that old bloke called her 'Mother'! No one could match Doris Speed's depiction of disgust - what an actress!

1:42:07 I just adore Elsie Tanner during her second and final stint on the show, 1976 - '84. She gained sophistication during her absence in the early 'seventies, and returned to Weatherfield more fascinating than ever in her 50s and early 60s. That is how to age well! Elsie was a real, grown-up, mesmerising WOMAN - not a girl, like silly Gail and Suzie, nor a middle-aged bore, like Mavis and Emily. Elsie was a gorgeous, dynamic, feminine, fabulous, full blooded WOMAN. A glorious, heady mix of the ordinary and extraordinary - like fish and chips and champagne, a combination actress Pat Phoenix often served to visiting friends at her cosy cottage. And like vintage champagne, the actress and the character only got better and more effervescent with age. I'm very glad to say growing up I had a few special women like this in my extended family. My Grannie Florence and my Auntie June spring to mind - funny, feisty man-magnets always, who arrived in a cloud of Chanel No 5, and were never seen without a full face of make up - even at home. I swear they picked up their compact (compulsory), and refreshed their lipstick just to make a phone call! As a little girl I couldn't take my eyes off them. Maybe it was a generational thing - Elsie, Florence and June lived through the agonies of the Second World War, and some incredibly sad and tough times. That kind of life experience puts your priorities right, develops a strong backbone, and makes you grab every opportunity for fun that comes along with hope and enthusiasm. I don't see too many women like them any more and it's a real shame, as they were great role models for girls. In the 21st century we are all supposed to worship youth - I include both sexes in this. Men are no longer men at 21, dressing as men and working to support a career with prospects, and probably a family too. Today grown adults live with ageing parents, remain dependant for as long as possible, and extend their teenage years into their thirties and beyond - even in the way they dress (sports wear, elasticated waistbands and trainers, hastily grabbed and worn from the floor). Who uses an iron nowadays?! Diana Dors was another of my female icons, and a contemporary of Pat Phoenix. Oh how I miss Elsie's breed of fascinating, fun goddesses! I haven't watched Coronation Street in 30 years but I watched these with my mum in 1978. I remember the Ray and Janice storyline...we didn't like either of them! Seeing those iconic characters...Ena, Annie, Elsie, Albert, Len...brought back so many memories. Thank you.

Yes they were mercenary alright and with each other, especially Rita. The only difference between Len and Rita is Len was a business man with a business and Rita had no business and thought she was a business woman. When she cried her heart out after Len died it was probably due to the release of stress knowing she can takeover his businesses, not because he was dead.

Len knew how to act he was proper actor through and through. the late peter Adamson. rip.

It’s al so ordinary, yet so addictive! Back then, the only real competition, and even then not much, was from Crossroads and Emmerdale so a lot of the storylines were being done for the first time. Not like today when all the soaps seem to copy each other. The dialogue is so natural, some scenes seem padded out, and you can almost predict what’s gonna be said next. You can imagine scenes as a cartoon strip with speech bubbles above the characters heads lol.

Very true! And vintage Corrie is utterly WONDERFUL! Today The Street isn't even a pale imitation of its glory years (which were 1976-1987 - under genius producer Bill Podmore - in my not so humble opinion). In my view The Street should have been axed circa 2000, when it had become abundantly clear it could never come close to matching, never mind surpassing, its fabulous prime. Yet it's staggered on for another 20 years with no end in sight, the quality of scripts and performances steadily sinking - but still ITV's reliable old cash-cow! In 2021 the scripts and cast are embarrassingly bad and frankly an insult to the utterly sublime show it used to be. At the risk of coming over like a po-faced feminist (which of course I am), where are the fabulous, funny and fearsome women The Street was famous for? They've vanished into thin air, along with the heart and humour that made the show magic. Producers brought in Maureen Lipman as a pseudo Blanche Hunt character - but obviously she isn't a patch on the original, and nor are the lines the scriptwriters put in her mouth. Unfunny, predictable and lame as hell! I honestly don't believe anyone who is a genuine devotee of the show at its best (as seen on this wonderful channel), can enjoy watching contemporary episodes.

@@glamdolly30 I agree. Sharon’s recent storyline wasn’t the Corrie we know and love at all, and the scene where she tasered Jenny was just cringeworthy. Obviously it must be tricky for the writers to devise storylines for the veterans but the transformation of Gail is plain bizarre. It doesn’t seem to matter about the younger cast’s acting skills, like Ryan, as long as they look good parading round in their boxers as a treat for the ladies!

@@zanducktv2398 Good Lord - that little snapshot you provided of modern Corrie only confirms I was right to abandon it 5 years ago! Why on earth did they bring back those two horrendous, precocious foster daughters of Rita's - buck-toothed Tracy and Jenny the ginger-whinger? Couldn't bloody stand either of them, horrible pair. It always beggared belief Rita would keep indulging them like they were her own kids. I shudder to think what the writers have done to Gail's character by now. Over the nineties she metamorphosed from a sweet young thing, into poison Ivy Tilsley.

Yes, I’d sooner have Mavis return or for Rita to visit her, to give Barbara a story than anything involving Jenny or Sharon, they both took advantage of her even if she’s on better terms with Jenny now. Tracie’s made a name for herself in musical theatre, I’m pleased her singing voice as Judy Garland etc is more pleasant listening than her speaking voice, ugh! As for Gail, yes she certainly morphed into Ivy to an extent, now she’s suffered a heart attack brought on by the stress caused by her dysfunctional (understatement!) family, and has gone to Thailand, as you do!

I don't know, perhaps it is because this is from an alien era or way of life from me but I see these episodes as displaying communication between everyday folk that seems impossible to imagine nowadays. Almost impossible to replicate in the simple yet flowing dialogue regarding day to day important events of the time.

The young actor who plays Kens son Peter Barlow is a brilliant little actor! I first saw him when he & Ken went hiking in the Fells of the Peak District! It was such an exciting episode & young Peter was just so authentic & convincing! Ok he might not be a handsome young hero but looks arent everything! Many very good looking people in the acting business rely on their looks & not so much on their talents. Looks fade & if your talent isnt so good then your rising star droops However non conventional looks & great acting talent creates great character actors! As they mature, they rise as their talents speak for themselves, & their time in theatre or film is long lasting. Many of our greatest actors dont have classic good looks or Too perfect faces So i think the young actor who plays Peter Barlow is a super actor! Dont know if he continued in the theatre etc but looks alone arent enough! Besides hes so cute! Yes pixie like But a very interesting face! Regards 🇬🇧👧

I couldn't stand that child actor Joseph McKenna - funny how different our perceptions can be! I was amazed to learn McKenna was the fifth of SEVEN actors to play Ken Barlow's son Peter (there were more incarnations of that character than there are Dr Whos! 🤣🤣🤣 ) McKenna came hot on the heels of Linus Roache as Peter (1973 - '75), who of course is also the real-life son of actor William Roache. Joseph McKenna lasted for just one year off and on, from 1977 - '78, and was the last child actor to play him. Peter Barlow was not seen again until he briefly reappeared in Weatherfield as an adult in 1986, played by David Lonsdale. I seem to recall he returned from the Navy for sister Susan's unlikely wedding to Mike Baldwin. The Barlow twins Peter and Susan both had a rocky road on the show, with both parts re-cast multiple times. From 1985 - '87 Wendy Jane Walker reprised the role of Susan as an adult, largely because she had played her as a child, off and on from 1970 - '74, the second of four actresses in the role. Producer Bill Podmore realised he'd made a casting boo-boo, and had the unfortunate task of firing the tearful Walker when it was clear she had zero chemistry with Mike Baldwin. Actor Johnny Briggs revealed in his autobiography he couldn't stand the younger actress's high and mighty ways, and said he deliberately ate garlicky foods before their love scenes to annoy her! Peter Barlow vanished again, before coming back in 2000, when casting directors finally hit the jackpot with the talented Chris Gascoyne - the seventh and so far the final Peter Barlow. And funnily enough, he had totally lost the Scottish accent! Gascoyne's scenes with waspish step-grannie Blanche Hunt, are surely among some of Corrie's finest comedy moments. I thought Joseph McKenna's acting in these late 'seventies episodes was pretty dreadful (the identical, whiny, sing-song delivery of every line).But to be fair to him, he had his work cut out holding his own against such a fantastic cast. It must be said, he was physically unappealing - and I'm not simply talking about looks, who cares - Eddie Yeats was not a looker, but he fast became one of the show's best-loved icons. I'm talking about his general image and bearing. I'm sorry, but if you have a career on camera, your physical presentation matters! As Bill Podmore explained in his excellent 1990 book 'Coronation Street - The Inside Story', casting good child actors is one hell of a challenge, which gave him many headaches over the years. I think he devoted a chapter to the younger stars at that time, and mentioned the troubles he had with Tracy Barlow in particular - played by four actresses to date. Christabel Finch was the original Tracy from 15 days old when she was chosen at random, to 6 years, when her parents abruptly moved to Guernsey. Apparently they hadn't given Corrie bosses notice, so the Tracy character mysteriously vanished, and wasn't seen until they re-cast Holly Chamarette two years later. Chamarette was a truly dreadful actress, which is likely why they kept her appearances to a minimum, and fired her three years later. Dawn Acton was next in the role and kept it for 10 years, into adulthood. But again her acting talent was limited, and she lost the role to its present incumbent Kate Ford in 2002. Seems Joseph McKenna recognised acting was not for him, and quit in the mid-'eighties. He became a great success in the fashion world, as a New York based editor and stylist for 'Vanity Fair', working with global stars and designers.

Lol there are times when Uncle Albert is so infuriating and obnoxious you want to strangle him Yet other times he can be so endearing & wise you want to cuddle him! Im sure he was a nightmare to work with on the sets of Corrie He never seems to " act " but as if hes playing a character thats his real self! Hes as cantankerous as he appears but at 81yrs he is still a marvel being able to learn lines & act as authentically as he does. Good Old Albert & the Magnificent Ena ! Regards 🇬🇧👧

Interesting Fact; Young Barlow never once thought of joining the Navy until that years hit by Village People came out - _'In The Navy'_ .

Oh yes, Rita was one of the Street's top glamour girls, no question, lovely figure and always so stylish. She reminds me of my lovely mum at the same age, petite and very feminine, with similar colouring and great legs!

My mum looked & dressed like Rita also had the same hairstyle back in the late 1970s but my mums hair was dark brown My mum was age 40 in 1978 and I was age 17yrs. My Mum sadly passed away in 2022 and I miss her so much But when I watch these Older Corrie Episodes they take me right back in time to happier times in my life.

When Corry was unmissable

Refreshing to watch stuff about normal folk with normal lives - not garbage about murders and far fetched plot - i stopped watching Corrie when Derdrie died - only popping back once to see Emily Bishop leave out of respect for the actress - and the character

Sid Bronze, Dave Platinum, Tommy Brass and Eugene Aluminium - all mates that were also at the race track with Stan!

In retrospect the departure of the Ray Langton character was the slow beginning of the end for Coronation Street at its zenith.

I've just realised Claire Peacock in the 2000s was the spitting image of young Deirdre here.

The most English break up ever, a sit down with a cup of tea. Half expected Deirdre to hit out with "eeee that's luuuvly". I'm still at a loss as to why Eddie is regarded as a pest, crook and all round scumbag? Was life in the 70's so harsh that this mild, well mannered, funny and thoughtful person can be regarded as such??

Because Eddie was an ex-con. He still dabbled in some dodgy dealings, but would never mess on his own doorstep, and he had a heart of gold.

@@TheMeeja yeah I suppose so. I was more thinking of just something as simple as him cheerily walking into the shop to buy a paper or whatever and especially Rita's attitude towards him even doing that. Guess they were supposed to be portraying that they were all mostly still wary of him.

Eddie Yates was indeed an ex con but I think on the street he dabbled in very minor things. When Marion came in to the scene in 1982 his character began to change more and he mellowed and did not get up to so many tricks. He left the show in December 1983. I guess he probably felt that his character had gone far enough in terms of storylines.

He'd got off to a bad start when he first came into the street. He had a brief fling with Bette lynch and told her he was a solidier. The police came looking for him because he was supposed to be in prison. He'd also been giving people dodgy stolen goods.

Len was a good character

Loving these old episodes. I don't remember many of the storylines, besides a few odds & ends (like Ernest getting shot, and Eddie & his girlfriend meeting over their CB radios), takes me right back to my childhood though. Great stuff 🙂

@@wanderer299a You are thinking of the second actress to play Tracy, a precocious brat with zero talent called Holly Chamarette. She lasted 3 years in the role, from 1985 - '88. These 1978 episodes feature the first Tracy Langton, Christabel Finch, who was cast in 1977 at just 15 days old, and left in 1983 aged 6 when her parents suddenly moved to Guernsey - without giving Corrie bosses much warning! As a result the role of Tracy wasn't cast again for two years, after which they brought the ghastly Holly in. She delivered every line the same, monosyllabic way, like a northern robot, which is why they didn't use her much (mum Deirdre was forever sending her upstairs to her room on various pretexts like: "Go and play your tapes Tracy luv!"). Dawn Acton was next to be Tracy, from 1988 - '99, when producers realised her serious acting limitations meant another actress was needed. The current incumbent, Kate Ford, won the role in 2002, remodelling Tracy as a full-on female villain/man-eater/murderer/jailbird.

One could create an entire history class based on things mentioned in Coronation Street. Hear something you haven't heard before? Look it up on Wikipedia! Don't forget to donate to Wikipedia. My gosh, it's so cool to look things up. I had Encyclopedia Britannica, and I don't remember if it was British English or American. I am very proud to say my 1st grade teacher in 1971, Mrs. White, was from Britain. She lived in London before emigrating to White House, TN. She told us about Trafalgar Square and the double decker buses. And why she had a prosthetic leg. She ran behind her father's tractor and got run over. The way she told the story was gentle and at the same time a lesson.

Bloody hell!!! It wasn't 2 minutes between Deidre overhearing Rita, on the phone, till she's threatening to pack her bags! Not that I blame her. I'm just saying, it was quite sharpish. In fact, the look on her face, when she heard Rita on the phone, to the legion. It was as if she was deciding what to pack.

Bets hairpiece is enormous

Its a shame Janice was only brought in as a plot device for Ray Langton's exit. She was a really good character who fitted in with the cast really well and could have had some longevity.

Really? I feel actress Angela Bruce was badly miscast, but that aside the character of Janice was thoroughly dislikable, with pretty much no redeeming features. Many others have commented the same, I think yours is the first fan comment I've seen.

Im a firey Aries but remember there are Sheep Aries & Ram Aries! Apparently the British, wishy washy, dull boring, ineffectual Prime Minister John Major( of the 1980s) was an Aries & it was the last Star sign i would have attributed to him. So i was surprised when a noted well known Astrologer at the time talked of the " sheep" follower & mild Aries AND theres the firey, dominant, leader & innovator of the Ram Aries Our PM John Majors was a slightly timid sheep Aries! Me? Ive not much time for the ditherery lukewarm sheep Aries They tend to avoid we quick tempered & flair up Rams I honestly get along best with Fellow Ram Aries or Radgy Sagittarius & Love of the Limelight Leo's All Fire signs My very least favourite sign is Virgo which is an Earth sign & 2 of my very good long time friends & my eldest daughter are Virgos However the Virgo signs have the same effect on Aries which is Driving us stark staring crazy So infuriating! The poor little soul, you can often see her desperately reaching out to her real Mummy (on the set), when she's crying - it breaks my heart!

Yes, the more I read about Peter Adamson, the clearer it becomes he was a nasty piece of work. Many of the cast who believed he was an old friend felt shocked and betrayed when he sold stories on them to a tabloid for cash. Jean Alexander (Hilda) said she was very hurt he had broken her confidences, to spill her secrets. Unforgivable in my opinion. No wonder people like Julie Goodyear and Barbara Knox cut him off after he was fired - that and the appalling 'kiddy-fiddling' he got away with, hiring George Carman QC to call two little girls he'd molested liars in a criminal court - utterly despicable. I think he finally got his comeuppance, ending his days broke and alone in a council flat.

Don’t know how Fred was in corrie so long an awful actor never liked him 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎

@@agems56 Most people today make way more than the majority of us did back in those days. So I don’t think it’s costs or affordability. Though I do hear some entitled youngers complain about not having money as they spend what they have on access indulgent and comforts we didn’t have. My mother always dyed her own hair, put rollers in and set it overnight at home. She’d then tease it and hairspray it in our bathroom morning, while my sis and I brushed our teeth under her as we choked for air from all that hairspray 😂 The only time she spent money at the beauty shop was when it needed to be cut and styled once every few months. I just think women don’t care or can’t be bothered to take time to do it. Not to mention fashion today doesn’t call for it.

Pat Phoenix was often in trouble with producer Bill Podmore for her extravagant hairdos. When he agreed to her request to have her back on the show in 1976, he made her promise to tone down Elsie's glamour. He said her clothes were too smart for a working class woman to afford, and Elsie shouldn't always look like she just stepped out of an expensive hair salon. Pat agreed to everything he stipulated, she was so desperate to return. But she went back to her old ways on day one, with a smart belted mac that would have cost Elsie 2 months salary, a full face of make up, stiletto heels and an enormous, 'just done' hair do. Pat's view was that Elsie's working class glamour was aspirational, and that women watching at home enjoyed seeing her dolled up. I agree! And to be fair, Pat bought Elsie's (and her own) clothes from a fantastic Manchester store that sold high quality clothes second hand. They may have looked expensive, but they were actually bargains - Pat loved a bargain! The Granada make-up ladies said Pat would arrive in their chair already fully made up - and then have more put on! She regarded every day as a personal appearance, and wouldn't dream of arriving for work bare-faced. She also took to having her own, perfectly colour-matched hair pieces added to her own coiffure, to boost it. Sometimes she wore multiple hair pieces (I noticed at least one in these episodes). By the late 'seventies, Elsie's hairdo was so enormous it's a wonder she got through the Rovers' double doors! 🤣🤣🤣Her only grumble to the make-up girls, was that there were too many damn red-heads in the show... It's easy to work out which actresses she's referring to, and chief among them was her nemesis on and off screen, Barbara Knox (Rita). There was no love lost there!

Cathy tyson. She played carol on band of gold shes been in a few films as well. I think she played the part well. I didnt hate her. Which is what i automatically thought id feel for a woman who desroyed a marriage. But she played the role well that much that i ended up feelin a little sorry for her

I liked Angela Bruce as Janice, she was the Brigadier in Doctor Who , was also in Doctors and Holby City , I was thinking it’s a shame she didn’t stay longer 🤣🤣🤷🏼‍♂️
