'Coronation' and 'Princess' Class Pacifics update

Here, I'm providing an update and overview of the latest versions of the Hornby 'Princess' Class locomotives I have recently acquired and highlighting some of the detail improvements I've undertaken to a couple of the 'Coronation' Pacifics.
Thank you for watching.

The Princesses in particular say 'speed' even when standing still. Greta to see - thank you.

Hi, Many thanks for your comments and observations. These are really lovely looking models. Hornby deserve great credit for the way they have managed to capture the sheer elegance of these locomotives.

Really enjoyed this review, being a fan of both classes it was interesting to see the different variants that Hornby have produced over the past 18 years. Like the author I have waited for the release of the Princess Royal 46200 in BR maroon. Some time ago I suggested to Hornby that this locomotive would be a great seller if released in the old Triang Railways packaging, we live in hope.

Hi, thank you for your interesting comments and observations! Your suggestion that the latest version of the 'Princess' should be released as the original 'R258' packaging and all is absolutely brilliant and I for one sincerely hope that it comes about. There seems to be no end to the releases of Princess Elizabeths and 46207's but the need for the class leader screams out! BTW, if you've not come across it already I did my very first 'review' of the Princesses starting with R258 which was given to me in1960 following through with 46201 and 5 right up to the current model kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKKg0rSJqMLcnag.html Many thanks!

What a beautiful line-up of loco's, that's almost "PORN" to an old railway buff..! I have fallen in love with Queen Maud in her lovely BR green liverie, though I won't be buying one at todays ridiculous prices..! Do like your indepth videos..! Keep up the good work..!

Hello Maurice, Thank you for your enthusiasm and kind comments! I omitted to mention in my video the green livery on 46211. Both 46211 and 46257 display a subtle difference in the shade of green compared to the earler China renditions. Back then the green was very dark indeed and so was the orange. The shade is now a tad lighter and the orange now has a yellowish tinge to it making it stand out more. It works for me and I do prefer it. I will continue with the train "porn"...

As soon as I saw this pop into my recommended viewing, I spotted the copper pipework and knew instantly what the subject matter was. I've painted all the copper pipework on my new Hornby Dublo Duchess of Atholl and now my new rebuilt W1 Hush Hush, including all the cab backhead details. Why Hornby keeps forgetting the copper work I don't know. I use the excellent Alclad II range of very fine metallics. I also painted the rear pony truck bearing covers brass as I see you have.

Hi, Many thanks for your observations and interest. I suppose it comes down to cost, but at least the injectors and associated pipework are represented now so with a litte care and patience the highlighting of the pipework can be undertaken. I have a similar upload of the BR Standard Pacifics where the there is a considerable display of injector and bulkhead pipework which has been attended to.

Yes, very skilled picking out of the pipework. So.....why do the Princesses have more visual impact than the Duchesses? They do look good don't they! You demonstrate great knowledge of the prototype. Always an enjoyable presentation, thank you.

Maybe the lack of smoke deflectors? The Princesses seem more dynamic to me too.

Many thanks kind sir for your thoughts and observations. The 'Princesses' being Crewe's first essay in producing a really large loco were an amalgam of some of the aborted Fowler Pacific, Stanier's GW heritage ( cylinders, driving wheels, boiler pressure same as the 'King'), taper boiler, under the overall design of the chief draughtsman Herbert Chambers,an ex Midland man. At 74ft 4in in length they were the longest locomotives to run on British Railways, apart from the Beyer-Garratts. Four independent sets of valve gear were used. The design, though successful demonstrated a number of weaknesses which led to lengthy periods of rectification. All of the issues were resolved and considerably improved upon in what proved to be Stanier's greatest design, the Coronations. Having said all that, the 'Princesses' still threw down an extra 300 lb of tractive effort per foot on the track than the 'Coronations'. I can't think of a class of locos that was was so small in number (12) yet so admired and so famous.

@@mytinplaterailway The 'Princesses' boiler was slimmer and longer than the Coronations' Both designs looked great, The Coronations were larger but more compact at the same time - they had to be - to keep within loading gauge and weight restrictions. That was the genius of the design, but there was always an elegance to the look of the Princesses
