I’m an Oklahoma alum and a lifelong fan, and we miss seeing the Pride of All Nebraska in Norman. Glad we’re gonna see that again in the next couple years, with all the great Nebraska fans. Classiest and kindest fans in college football, and wonderful people. I’ve never met nicer people than the good folks of Nebraska, and I’ve been all over the country.

It’s really cool that they hold up the visiting team’s flag and play part of their fight song. My school will be visiting them this year and I’m excited to watch their pre-game! Very classy!

Eowyn126 Most Big Ten Schools do this but if you watch Ohio State’s pregame the band form the Opposing teams Logo on field and they do it weekly which is why I personally think they hold up the name “The Best Damn Band In The Land”!

Any of these bands should be playing Super Bowl and NONE of this pop crap! There is a spirit and excitement to these bands! My own school bands (taught 48 years) gave more spirit and excitement to our people than any Super Bowl dreamed of.

Nebraska Football has such a great tradition, but agree with comments on band. Too bad they aren't taking cues from the rest of the BIG on dynamic marching bands. It's likely a function of UofN being originally in Big 12 where isn't the tradition of chair-stepping bands like across BIG. Purdue, which is the only school in BIG with no music school or classes, has the biggest band in the BIG and incredible performances - so isn't always about having great music-degree-pursuing students. Not sure, but don't think Rutgers or Maryland is quite there yet either. That said, isn't meant to be critical of these dedicated students! They give much of their time and effort to perform in heat, cold, rain and other weather, and unfortunately this year thus far, winning or (mostly) losing and sure only follow instruction of their directors.

I can see the band, but I can't hear it. Why is this posted?

IT'S AMAZING, how they get away with such a LAME PERFORMACE! And then won't allow any visiting bands in, to EDUCATE them on what it takes to be a BIG TEN BAND! Penn State did that at first, then opened up, took their lumps, and now they have one of the better bands in the BIG TEN!

GOBLUEADAM lol it’s Not That Deep™️. Tbh these two bands are so different, it’s difficult to compare them. PSU looks pretty clean, but the fact of the matter is, they spend a lot more time standing still, so they get to spend more time working on each move. Plus, the marching style is completely different. Nebraska uses a straighter leg and PSU uses a bent leg. This means PSU gets more tired (it’s a harder style), but it also means they can’t march backwards, which gives a band more possibilities for movement, but also makes it harder to see the straight lines and how well the forms are setting. Just the style alone is going to change how the bands look greatly. Neither is better than the other, it’s just true. NU is going to move a lot more and create more interesting shapes but sacrifice the perfection of each form a bit, and PSU is going to move less, but they’re going to look cleaner bc they’re always going forward and moving in lines.

I didn’t mean to write an essay lol sorry. At the end of the day, the band members don’t view it as a competition; they’re just there to have fun, get away from the stress of homework for a while, and support their team. It’s all for fun, let it be fun! Leave the trash talk for the football team (I’m pretty sure Penn State is better than NU at football rn anyway)

I'm a Nebraska fan who loves the band, and funny enough, even though I know you're a troll, I agree with you. Our pregame show is perhaps the worst in the B1G. We still roll step, which is pretty much unacceptable by B1G standards. However, the tubas have started chair-stepping, so maybe they're transitioning somewhat? There is nothing really "wow" about our pregame show either. They made it slightly better in 2014, but still really not up to par. I'd love to see them gravitate towards a more B1G style.

    1. I don't have access to all the history of the Penn State Blue Band, but I don't think I can find a time where they _didn't_ chair-step, even before they joined the B1G. 2. A big concern with chair-step technique is that it has the potential to allow "feet in the sound", especially if executed poorly (looking at you, Wisconsin). 3. Backwards marching is very uncommon with chair-step technique, but completely possible. Ohio State even teaches the technique: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZXiCrq2ahdmpm9o.html 4. I wonder if the band director would consider having them wear black shoes with white spats, as is common across the pre-UNL B1G bands (with Indiana as an exception). 5. By the way, NU should stand for Northwestern University, whose band has been invited to Memorial Stadium multiple times in recent memory.

@@Eowyn126 that’s how I’m gonna view it in 3 years, especially now going in with marching without ANY experience and back strength, as I’m assigned the 2nd biggest bass drum, which weighs over 40 lbs, carried only by my back
