Corner Cabinets | What are your options?

Ойын-сауық

There may be no trickier cabinet in kitchen design, than the base corner cabinet. In this video I go over the various base corner cabinet options, how to make corner cabinets functional, and which corner cabinet I prefer in my kitchen designs.

    I am an overall house designer and the kitchen is one of the major areas that need more attention to detail and functionality. I always have trouble designing corner cabinets and that is the reason why I always stick with a linear design for the kitchen. This guy totally nailed it, I definitely learned a lot, and will surely use some of his advice on my future design. I will definitely recommend this video to my colleagues. Great work!💯

    I'm doing something different yet. A corner cabinet that faces the wall, giving access from the room adjacent (a laundry/utility room). The cabinet will house a pressure tank and tankless water heater.

    I have a strong garden/landscape edge around my super susan. You can bend it to the size of susan you have and screw it to the plank below. It can hold back gravel stones so I am sure kitchen utensils are no big deal. Nothing can fall off and the super susan itself does not need a large edge so it's easy to see and get things. I also attached a magnet to the plank and the super susan to automatically get the susan in the correct position with a softclose effect before closing the cabinet doors. The reason it's better than the lazy susan you advise is because you have the whole surface to store items, there is no annoying central pole, it's far more load bearing and you can rotate each shelf seperately.

    I too am an architectural designer who has designed at least a couple dozen kitchens and agree with everything here. I avoid a corner cabinet situation if I can but sometimes either by the room configuration, shape or size you just have to place one as the best solution to the overall design and storage needs but I would do everything possible to avoid two inside corners. Definitely worth it to invest in the good hardware solution in the blind cabinet option in most cases. Having a peninsula drawer bank under a breakfast bar can work but the top drawer has to be open in the front to access/see under the bar counter.

    I had my husband take out the lazysusan and so we just used it without and it’s not that bad but today it’s better because I put a few wicker baskets on the bottom to hold stuff and organize it better. 1 is full of my sugar free coffee syrups and a few soda stream bottles, another has plastic bowls used for leftovers and the other holds peanutbutter, salad dressing etc… shelf above holds big apple cider vinegar,mixer, strainers etc. honestly I feel like it looks better than it ever has!

    Thanks for all the advice. I had seen another idea a while back on Pinterest I think it was . Somebody made an internal unit which was on castors and then attached vertically by piano hinge so that it could be pulled out and pushed to one side and then drawers slid across to provide access to the storage at the back . I was thinking of doing something like that myself as there’s minimum space wasted in my mind at least

    The best set up I ever had was a large corner cabinet with an L shaped middle shelf 13 inches wide a 9 inch shelf on left hand side for small pots .the bottom corner held my large soup pot . This had two doors hinged on either side 12 inches wide and when both where open a large open to get in to clean and nothing to retrieve. And if at all possible access the blind corner from adjacent space.

    I make my corners at least 1meter by 1 meter so the doors and opening are bigger. Also i make the shelves not that deep. They dont go back against the wall. Another option is to make the top shelve a bit smaller so the access to the bottom is easier.

    This is a great video . I moved into an old house with a small 9x10 kitchen. It had two straight runs on either side and a set of double windows covering the entire back wall between them. The door to the room was on the opposite front wall to the left when looking into this space . The run on the left side of room had a high crank out style window above my head level before a partial wall that could not be changed that the left run banked against . So essentially a totally wasted space about 3.5 x3 on your left as you walked into this 90 sq foot space . :((( The people in the 80’s or before had built the strangest letter rack style desk into it , with a phone shelf all the way up the wall. It was a monster and useless when you need kitchen space desperately. I almost lost my life taking it down ( all one unit 8 feet by the entire width made from composite and maple !!) haha not funny. On the other side at the top of the run on right ( so directly across the room from this monster shelf lol ) was the 80’s refrigerator. Just stuff in the corner . Clearly they didn’t want it to be near the doorway going into the room . They maybe didn’t think of it at all as a reason why they did it and most likely Just shoved it in the corner based upon fridge handle location left Vs. Right ; but, there was no way I was going to choose visual pleasure over a waste of space and more cabinets in that kitchen . I immediately pushed the fridge across the room into the monster desk space and built a set of open custom shelves above it . Voila ! A place for all my large pots and huge casseroles all in sight . Then I installed a new set of nice wide base cabinet drawers, another double wall cabinet, plus a narrow open cabinet , in its place .. got a nice run of granite for over the entire run. Etc etc . The wall to the right as you walked in ? Welll, it was lined with a ‘custom made broom closet’ conglomeration floor to ceiling ( 9 feet ) with custom made tongue and groove style doors from the 70’s.. the ENTIRE wall . One huge space 4 feet by 5 feet high with two double doors over it no shelves even!!! Above and around it small single shelf 2x2 doors to the entire left in a stack and above to the ceiling . I took the doors off. Dismantled the doors and used the tongue and groove boards to build new shaker style doors on my dining room table night after night I think I built 27 or 28 doors in total for the entire kitchen … can you tell there was no money ?? In that horrid broom closet space I built a shallow counter across the middle , put my mixer my blender etc on it ; underneath built a bank of drawers on the left for my potatoes (15 lbs per week, onions , and a shallow ‘ junk drawer ,, (medium density fiberboard makes great drawer boxes you know lol! ) and to the right a nice set of shelves with ONE (1!) normal counter height door over them. Normalcy !! Haha way up at the ceiling I made LESS (3) doors to cover where there had been six! Shaking my head … over on the left I cut the chaos of so many small shelf spaces ( which was actually very cool and useful cubby space for dividing canned goods , snack space etc and built like a brick shithouse so would have been a shame to rip out; by simply making bigger but less number of doors for them and using the counter height to make it all visually appealing from there. Over near the double windows on the end of the left run there had been your typical 1960’s/70’s huge cabinet on the lower level where an elephant could get lost in . JUST one cabinet to the left and to the right of the oven space oh yes I divided those too! One cabinet became 4 spaces - divided by a shelf on the lower, a door on left a deep drawer on the right for Tupperware lids and plastic containers a must !! and above divided in half again a door on the left and a hidden utensil drawer on the right behind a door with space underneath it . MAgic!! And well that other big base cabinet to the left of the stove ? It also got the doors taken off ,, left off ! Divided by a shelf and my microwave put at a height that a child could reach to make popcorn or a quick snack and me not having to reach up high to pull boiling corn etc out of it. I had debated stacking plates linens etc in there in an open concept kind of way because these things are always rotating off of an open shelf , but decided I really just didn’t want a microwave up there anymore. Simple range hood nice tile backsplash much more sleek looking . Kitchens are such a personal thing nowadays and times have changed so much from the 80’s& 90’s way of thinking. Every person should have said what they need and not have to struggle to cook. Also, there is NOTHING like being able to just hang a pot or frying pan on a hook after washing it and then just walk away. I cannot say enough about having a nice run of hooks over a sink or area where you won’t bang your head on them . Thank you for your information on blind corners and I will watch for your videos as I am now in the middle of another renovation even more challenging than the last !!

  • @hsdesignstudio

    @hsdesignstudio

    Жыл бұрын

    It is more difficult to work with any corner, not just 45s. To attribute the change in design away from 45s as lack of effort or creativity is a poor argument. It is a dated design simply by the fact it’s no longer in the majority of kitchens. The angled corner also eats up a bunch of extra floor space and creates an extra deep corner section- rarely a positive in either aspect. In smaller kitchens this would be terrible. Finally. there are some great storage solutions for 90 degree corners, and a ton of cabinet options. To suggest it is more or less just wire racks is pure speculation without research. You can have full wood lazy Susan’s, you have blind corner cabinets with pullouts, you can have full corner drawers with hidden recessed drawers, you can have double garage pullouts. There are FAR more options with a 90 degree corner, and the pros outweigh the cons in pretty well every argument. I’m glad you like your angled corner, and you should if you included it in your kitchen Reno. However, the vast majority of people do not want angle corner cabinets.

    Stoppppp! The traditional Lazy Susan base cabinet is getting a really bad rap here and I don’t understand why. It’s the work horse of my kitchen and will be for you as well, if used properly. If you fill it with canned goods & tiny items of COURSE things will fall into the void. Store smart. I use mine (36x36 Lazy Susan, pie-cut carousel, solid shelves not wire) to corral many small appliances. Nothing EVER falls off. With a simple “knee tap & grab” I have easy access to: (upper): Ninja 1500 kitchen system (food processor + blender), Cuisinart immersion blender, & a hand mixer. And (lower): Griddler Panini grill, mini chop, and Keurig single serve. As info: Coffee is made for guests, we don’t drink it daily. Rarely-used, instapot lives in a lonely base drawer. Convection, Microwave, & AirFry features are combined into my 1.7 ft GE Advantum “OTR” unit (which I’ve installed under a wall cab instead). I really *REALLY* dislike appliances cluttering up counters, so despite 3 large countertops & a 7’ Island, I set out just 2 “pretty” ones; a KitchenAid stand mixer, and a SMEG toaster. I hope this has been somewhat useful. To everyone planning a new kitchen, how exciting! And Good luck!
