This is why Shirley is known as the rumba queen on strictly! wish I could have performed it that well, in my dancing 💃 years, my late husband and I never really mastered the rumba! but we killed the jive! 😉

If you can find the lecture, on YT somewhere, that she gave on Jive technique (partnered by Riccardo Cocci) it's brilliant. And you can often tell by a dancers feet in the Jive, if they have taken instruction from Shirley :)

So glad I finally found my favorite dance performance on KZread. I taped this years ago and watched many times. Her leg action was incredible, so sharp and graceful at the same time. No other dancers I have watched while searching for this dance performance could match her leg action. I absolutely love this and will be watching this over and over again.

As a life long dancer and appreciator of all genres of dance...watching this shows me how all dance evolves over time...the movements in the Rumba today seem much more exaggerated than this one by Shirley ... it's lovely to watch !!

Samantha Hamer ... I'm not a dancer as such but I did have dance lessons as a youngster. I've always loved watching dancing, especially latin and I wish I had stuck at it with the dancing. I know what you mean about how dances and dancers have changec over the years. I used to watch Come Dancing sometimes years ago and the dances seemed much simpler then, they have got much more expressive and pronounced as time has passed. I prefer how they are done nowadays personally.

Shirley Ballas had some form back then, she was fit!

What a beautiful ballroom dancers couple dancing.the Rumba! They let me feel swirling with them as.thry dance. So enchanting as though I'm in the midst of flowers.in the paradise. The musical background, La Playa is so sentimental to hear but then caresses my heart full of love. A great performance which deserves my full admiration.

Actually Shirley was more a Latin dancer than Ballroom ..obviously all dancers have to do both as amateurs , but usually have a speciality ..Latin was Shirley and Corkys..🇬🇧

It actually shows how todays dancers (I can only comment on the great Strictly team) are good but no where near as polished as Shirley and others from that era of dancing. Perhaps because the professionals being paired with non dancers, means we do not get to see their full credentials on the dance floor but boy, Shirley is the best head judge for the show, hands down. Respect.

Jeannette Burgess ... Yes, the pro's tone it down when dancing with the "celebrities". You should look at video's on here about some of the pro's in demo's and competitions, they are far from second rate dancers. Look for a funny video with Katya Jones and Neil for example, doing a ChaCha with a quick change. There are others too, and they are fabulous dancers.

well, they've trained pretty much EVERY professional dancer on DWTS and Strictly at some point (obviously especially Mark, Derek and Julianne)

I think Mark is done with DWTS (and by extension Strictly), he's focussed on his music with his wife. Same kinda goes for both Derek and Julianne - I highly doubt we'll ever see them compete on the show again. (yes, I know Derek is a judge now and I think it's a great fit for him tbh)

There's not much Rumba content. All I see is the rotation and turning. I prefer the present modern Rumba to this old style.

Corky seems to do a lot less than Shirley as he just seems to be posing.

How rude are you! It was a valid question from Corinne Woolley. In fact Shirley was subservient to her husband, by all accounts, as she could not take praise from anyone without having to mention Corky too, or he went into a strop. Donny Burns had an awkward moment at one of the shows regarding this. So to sum up, she would have no choice, she would have had dance for the USA as Corky dear, would not have been happy otherwise. Who is the halfwit now?
