I used to be a silversmith a long time ago. Many things were changed in my life from that time (very long conversation), but the only that didn't changed is my patience. Hi again, I apologize for the delayed answer. You can buy readymade pitch from jewelry supply shops like Rio Grande and Otto Frei in US www.riogrande.com/category/tools-and-equipment/metal-forming/pitch-and-pitch-bowls?c=4c972f4b-ab83-4645-aa8f-a7b80157fb4a&pageNum=1 www.ottofrei.com/search?keywords=pitch Betts and CousinsUK in UK www.bettsmetalsales.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=pitch www.cousinsuk.com/product/pitch on Amazon www.amazon.com/s?k=German+Red+Pitch&ref=nb_sb_noss and probably on ebay. In general pitch for repousse is expensive, so many of us make our own pitch. Here is a simple guide for making it: www.repoussetools.com/what_is_pitch.htm And this is my recipe: 300gr asphalt tar, 210gr colophony (aka rosin or pine resin), 250gr plaster of Paris (fine grained gypsum) and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. To make the desired amount of tar, simply add the materials proportionally. The process is as follows: first melt well the asphalt with the colophony (stirring the mixture constantly), then add slowly the gypsum so as not to cool the mixture and keep constant stirring. Now when the mixture becomes homogeneous, add the oil and stir again until not seeing the oil in the surface of the mixture. A few tips: Keep medium temperature so as not to burn out the ingredients-stirring is essential to this. Instead of olive oil you can use beeswax or fine engine oil SAE 10W. If you want to have soft pitch add oil, for hard pitch add gypsum. I hope that these will help you. All the best Jimmy

I make my own tar, here is the recipe: For 800gr ready to use chasers pitch you need: 300gr asphalt (tar) 210gr pine rosin 250gr fine gypsum 40ml 10SAE machine oil Preparation On an water bath (bain-marie) you melt the tar, once its melted you add the pine rosin and stir until it melts too, then you add the gypsum and stir continuously till you can't see any chunks and have a mixture with velvety texture. Lastly you add the oil and stir until it become one with the mixture. To make a larger quantity of chasers pitch, you increase proportionally the materials. The mixture can be made hard by adding gypsum (if the regional temperature is higher than 27C°) or soft by adding machine oil-for temperatures lower than 15C° I hope that this will help you. very nice can I ask what the blue liquid and the brightening thing at the end was. it didn't look like liver of sulphur. 3i will ve interested to get sone of this

Thank you very much! The blue liquid is an oxidizing agent for copper alloys, similar to liver of sulphur but not so strong. The brightening agent is the well known 'Brasso' a metal polish for removing oxidation from brass, copper and stainless steel. I assume that you find oxidizer for copper alloys in any jewelry supply shop, as for Brasso I think in super markets or any shop that sells house cleaning agents. All the best Jimmy

"Ahh that's what it's called" repousse' and chasing. Pitch? as in Tar, Brea. Hmm, always used shellac, I like the smell and chewing tar... beautiful pencil box. time to show 10yr old daughter this technique so she can make herself a pencil box. she's my little Tinker. the older kids didn't want to learn, 10yr old was a natural!

Hello Marta, Thank you very much, I really appreciate your comment! I made my own tar for chasing; its a mixture of common asphalt, pine resin, fine gypsum and fine machine oil. Here is a sample of the mixture: 300gr asphalt (tar, AKA German black pitch) 210gr pine resin 250gr fine gypsum 3 soup spoones of W10 machine oil For making larger quantity you add the ingredients proportionally. First you melt the asphalt and the pine resin (in a Bain-marie type pot) and stir well, once these two are melted well you add the gypsum slowly and stir continuously. Once you see a smooth mixture (you must not see any floating gypsum powder) then you add the oil; stir well, again you must not see any oil floating. This recepie gives a medium hard chasing pitch; if you live in a relatively hot region you may need to make the mixture harder (by adding gypsum), in case you live in a colder region you can add oil to make it softer. Do u like to buy old antique copper vessel ??

I am trying my hand at duplicating your spiral in silver as a way to refresh my memory. It’s been many years since I have attempted repousse work. I notice you planish the ridges. Should I soften the metal and pitch to some degree, or leave it hardened?

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! Yes, I always planish the ridges to retain a uniform hammering effect. Before placing the metal onto the pitch it's good to anneal it; after it's cooled onto the pitch it's wise to heat it up a bit so as to work it easily. You can repeat the heating process when you feel the forming of metal is getting hard again. All the best Jimmy

Thanks for your comment, David! I used the torch to heat up the piece 5 or 6 times as it was on the pitch. This way you avoiding bending the metal plate as well as it keeps the pitch a bit more elastic. And I took it out and turn it over twice (I cleaned and annealed the plate each time) All the best Jimmy

Hi Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it! I used liquid oxidizer for brass-copper; you can find it in every jewelry tool supply shop. As for the pitch, I submerge it in a bowl with petroleum (petroleum needs time to disolve the pitch) you can use gasoline; it's way faster, but more expensive! Thanks again! All the best Jimmy

@@LeTrashPanda Ageed. Burning it off while a fan is sucking the fumes out is Ok I think. My soldering and annealing is done under a squirrel cage fan I bought that is normally used in a furnace. The fumes are sucked up and blown out a window.

Τo be more specific, the ratio of the ingredients in the recipe let's say for 1 kilogram are: 370g asphalt, 260g colophony, 310g plaster of Paris and 70-100ml oil (SAE 10W); the result will be a medium hard pitch. Petroleum; most of the time I use petroleum, but if I need to clean a piece fast I use nitrocellulose thinner.

Ευχαριστώ πολύ για το σχόλιο! Το χημικό είναι οξείδωση ορείχαλκου και μπορείς να το βρεις σε όλα τα καταστήματα που έχουν εργαλεία και υλικά αργυροχρυσοχοΐας (οδός Θησέως στο Σύνταγμα). Το άλλο είναι κοινό καθαριστικό μετάλλων και μπορείς να το βρεις σε όλα τα super markets. Υπάρχουν και πιο εξειδικευμένες αλοιφές για καθαρισμό η γυάλισμα κατά πολύ ακριβότερες, θα τις βρεις σε καταστήματα στην Αθήνα (οδός Σπύρου Πάτση) Φιλικά Δημήτρης
