Is tracheostomy suctioning performed sterile? and can the suction hose tip be aspirated intraorally without a catheter?

Tracheostomy suctioning should be a sterile procedure per the NCLEX for prioritization of patient safety and decreased risk for infection. In-home care or other situations, the procedure may be performed differently per HCP orders, but for testing purposes, the correct answer is to use sterile technique. A suction catheter or Yankauer should be used with the suction hose for intraoral suctioning. I hope this helps! 🙂
