COP28 ends with deal on transition away from fossil fuels | DW News

A historic deal has been struck at the UN climate summit in Dubai that will see a transition away from the use of fossil fuels. The clear reference to the future of fossil fuels is a first but does not call for fossil fuels to be phased out, as many countries demanded. The exact text say: "Transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science." It also includes the goal of tripling the capacity of renewable energies by 2030 and doubling the pace of energy efficiency during this period, something G20 countries have already committed to.

So these countries are going to stop using fossil fuels in 200 years? Because "transitioning away" from fossil fuels doesn't mean stop using them and in a "just, orderly, and equitable manner" isn't a timeframe. The deal is there is no deal.

@@peabase UAE for example actually do use nuclear energy. But certain EU countries such as Germany do not want that as alternative and decided to go away from this Option. Other alternatives are highly dependent on specific conditions ie wind water solar and cannot be implemented universally. And you are forgetting oil in manufacturing of goods. No solar in the world will help to replace it in that. By all means I agree we have to look at replacing it with alternatives but they really need to be “better” and not just for the sake of fulfilling political agendas (example electric cars). And you cannot compare the whole world with Scandinavian countries, other countries are going through a different phase still in the developmental cycle. Just like a 70 year old retiree is in a different place in life compared to a 17 year old teenager who still needs to build his life.

This agreement will be as worthless as all previous agreements. China's carbon emissions will continue to increase exponentially. As other countries develop as a result of China's economic meltdown their carbon emissions will increase exponentially. Poor nations will continue to burn carbon based fuels - wood, oil and gas - because they're cheaper than renewable options. Countries ruled by dictators don't care about the rest of the world and need money to fund their militaries - countries like China, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. So they amount of Carbon pushed into the atmosphere by these poor and rogue states The goal must be carbon neutrality. The burning of any carbon based fuel pushes carbon into the atmosphere regardless of whether it's source is fossil fuels or plant based alcohols. Be realistic and strive for carbon neutrality. By reducing the dependency on carbon based fuels. Fossil fuels cannot be phased out completely so don’t make that the goal. China will continue to push out additional 2kg of carbon for every 1 kg of carbon removed by the west India is modernizing and will catch up to China in carbon production The developing world only buys whatever is the cheapest fuel source which is oil and gas Use science and common sense and work towards carbon neutrality using a combination of reduced dependency on carbon based fuels and carbon sequestering using natural methods (protected and enhanced grasslands, forests, and ocean preserves).
