Coolio Interview: Cocaine Addiction, Story Behind Gangsta's Paradise + Freestyles Live

Ойын-сауық

From breaking new artists, to staying true to its Hip Hop roots -- Sway in the Morning welcomes Coolio to our Shade 45 studio for a very candid interview.
Nothing was off-limits for Coolio. He opened up about making his big break at 30 years old with Gangsta's Paradise, becoming the first hip hop artist to visit countries overseas and his downfall with cocaine.
Watch above as he breaks down the stories we all want to know -- and of course we couldn't let him leave without kicking a freestyle!

Props to Coolio man. This interview showed me that we should spend less time dissing and dismissing our forefathers. Those who came before us. Coolio is a guy that some crack on and call corny or make fun of but he's a human being like all of us, has been through some real shit, and overall has a positive energy about him. In 2015 I'm rootin' for Coolio!

This is the first tape I ever paid for, and I still have it in my closet today! Thank you Coolio for the memories and speaking the mind state of many Gangstas here in New Zealand and around the world!

I still play Coolio's music all the time. Gangsta's paradise , I always make sure to play , especially when teens are around. That song still brings tears to my eyes. I have been there and seen to much of it. I went through drugs myself when I was a kid. I quit school in the 7th grade to make money. I went back the next year , took a test and went straight into the tenth grade . my mom brought me to another state.

Man...I done got so much info from Coolio from watching this interview with him on sway in the morning! It's so funny to me that "Gangsta's Paradise" is the only song everybody knows from Coolio! I heard of Coolio growing up but I looked at him as like another Will Smith and thought he wasn't speaking on nothing in his music like that! Til I seen him on Black Jesus and man did he get old lol! I was curious to know about his music and I gave it a try! After listening to "It Takes a Thief, Gangta's Paradise" and "My Soul" album! Coolio had great music and I was wrong to just judge him! Coolio wasn't the gangsta type he might've talked about back when he was a thug but when he got outhere he never portrayed that side! He was from the streets but he was "Gangsta Friendly"! Coolio did look like someone that wasn't just outhere for fame he was humble! I respect him for not acting like a thug in his music being hard! He has a wonderful comical side of him that I never believe before! And he has a style more of a street poetry flow! He's definitely underrated and overshadowed by alot of music he made by just that one song "Gangsta's Paradise"! It's terrible how he's not mentioned in West Coast Hip Hop today! For me that's not my favorite song by Coolio! My favorites are I remember, Can O Corn, Geto Highlites, Smilin, Bright as the Sun, Devil is Dope, 2 Minutes and 21 Seconds of Funk, Nature of the Business and C U When you get There! After those three albums the rest of his shit for play play if you ask me! Most are recycled songs after his last 4 albums? He already done made his music he ain't gotta make no more! But hopefully his next album if he decides hopefully it'll be on some real emcee shit! I love Coolio he done went through alot of demons but thank God he's seeing more clearer and better! I wish he was my uncle! I'll be happy if Coolio let me hang with him for a day:)!
