    I just got my 3 pack from Amazon $22 with a screw cap, looking forward to using these this weekend camping 2 days. Also read they are used to transport blood

    I do not like them. I bought alot of these types of packs including cooler shock and I just threw them away. In no way do they replace ice when it comes to safety of storage. I really wanted them to though. So here was my problem with these insert-able ice packs no matter the brand. 1. You cannot have the best of both worlds. You can either have your food at a safe temperature and have zero extra room in your cooler. For example you can use 4 of these ice blocks, weigh down your cooler to where it is unbearably heavy and not be able to fit anything in it worth eating or 2. You can use less ice packs and the temp inside your cooler be too high and it make the food dangerous to eat. I have tried them in everything from a 9 quart to 48 quart cooler using ice packs of different brands and have tested them both in expensive rotomolded coolers and cheapo Igloo coolers with similar results even after prechilling. I also tested them in soft coolers. the results were very bad on my end. With the cooler having a good pack to space ratio and still being heavy with the coolers prechilled and the food that is inserted being chilled but not frozen like a normal lunch (sandwich, chips, a sweet and a couple of bottles of water in a tupperware container) the temps within the cooler in a 70 degree house with the lid remaining closed and 2 large ice packs surrounding the food the temperature at my meal was 47.5 degrees. If it were in the heat this would go up quite a bit. Now, in an attempt to try to get the cooler to drop the food to a safe temperature of under 40 degrees. I needed 6 packs 4 large and 2 small inside of a smaller cooler just to achieve that and it was the 11 quart Yeti. In no way do these replace ice. It can help prolong how long you can retain ice but to get food to safe temps it just does not do it, you would need so many packs you would not have enough space for food.

    Thanks for this video! any idea what the temp would be in a cooler with only ONE pack? I'm looking to keep my cooler at about 65°F

    Javier Anchondo JR it's definitely going to depend on the size and quality of your cooler along with how cold the contents are just start with and the outside temperature. also if the ice pack is placed on top of your contents it will tend to keep the contents much colder than if you just set the ice pack of the bottom of the cooler.

    Do you think the ratio of 3 large packs = 20 lbs of ice is correct?

    pearlll garcia that sounds about right. I'd say it's even better than the ice as it's a lot colder than ice to start with.

    Yes! Ice is around 32 degrees but Cooler Shock packs remain at 18 degrees.

    I've been a big fan of "blue ice" in coolers for more than 30 years. Let's face it, melting ice in a cooler makes a big mess and no matter how many zip lock bags you place the ice in, they will leak, guaranteed. My question is this; What is the advantage of this product over a quality blue ice product, like Gott blue ice weekender (now made by Rubbermaid)?

    I've had some of the blue ice products. I've not tested it with a thermometer, but this seems to be substantially colder and last for longer in my experience.

    How long does it last without a cooler?

  • @JamieDolan

    @JamieDolan

    I've never actually tested without any kind of cooler. But we've used them in a cooler bag that doesn't have much insulation and I would say we still got at least around a half a day in moderate temperatures. The outdoor temperature is definitely going to have a significant effect if it's very warm out.

    @@rabbitskipper4454 I found some comparisons to Ice on their page. I think they are basically comparing a cooling back to 4 pounds of ice, so that gives some point of comparison. However, especially if you put the coolershocks in a very cold freezer, the material in them gets colder than ice will, so that is going to extent their cooling time. coolershock.com/test-results/
