Ralph Bakshi the person who made this film was combining live action with animation over a decade before Roger Rabbit...Roger Rabbit is a masterpiece, but I assure you it was influenced by the maker of this film not the other way around.
For people who are wondering why Cool World(1992) didn't make sense, here's your answer. Ralph Bakshi wanted to make a live action/animated horror film about a half human, half cartoon girl who gets revenge on her human father. The producer (who financed the Friday the 13th films) was sick of making horror films so the script was changed without Bakshi's permission. Most of the time, the movie didn't have a script and the animators were told to draw whatever they want. If Paramount stuck what Bakshi wanted, it wouldn't be on the same league as Roger Rabbit but at least it would be more enjoyable and tolerable.

I remember reading that Bakshi's "Hey Good Lookin'" was originally supposed to be a live action/animation mix too, but it was nixed in favor of a fully animated feature.

The movie is a guilty pleasure. I went and saw it in the theatre when it came out. It was amusing seeing parents bringing small children to see this, not knowing of Bakshi's films being meant for adults. I like how the trailer misleads you into thinking Brad Pitt is the villain and Kim Basinger is the heroine.

It's a real shame this movie didn't get to be the movie it was meant to be in the first place, a freakin' _crazy horror film._ You can see traces of that fact in the set design and how creepy/WTF weird it can be but apparently halfway through building it all they just said "Ehh, FUCK the director's script. Here's ours instead."

+Kaye Faye Actually, Frank Mancuso Jr. rewrote the script, then when Kim Basinger got involved she wanted a toned-down, kid-friendly version and the studio agreed. Funnily enough, it only managed to get toned down to PG-13.

lol. Did she even read the script or see what the basic concept of the film was? Considering the only majour thing the two have in common is "Sleazy comic artist has sex with his own creation" I'm not sure why you would want to try and make it more 'family friendly" when the premise is anything but family friendly. Not to mention the fact it's a Ralph Bakshi film. The last time he was told to make a "Family Picture" we got Wizards, which was only PG (Though I imagine if PG-13 existed at the time, it would have gotten that instead.) but still had a half naked fairy with gigantic breasts whose nipples poked through her... uhh, sling the whole movie and there's also references to incest not to mention the plot revolving around a Wizard who digs up old Nazi technology and propaganda (It's set after a nuclear war, which inexplicably brought fairies and wizards into existence. Go figure.) and uses it to try and take over the world, lots of bloody violence and terror ensuing.

Pitt loved the original script, was going to play the part of Jack Deebs, and looked forward to working with Drew Barrymore, who was on the upswing after a very bad couple of years on drugs. However, the producer and Bassinger fucked everything up.

Not really bad than I thought. With just seeing the early age of Brad pitt, it deserves watched.
So we're also going to ignore the fact that the cast of Cool World look like older versions of the Archies? Frank Harris is Archie Andrews, Jack Deebs is Reggie Mantle, Holli Would is Betty Cooper, and Lonette is Veronica Lodge.
I was seven when this came out. I remember parents thought it was going to be like 1988s Who Framed Roger Rabbit and took their kids to see it. Then there was an uproar of angry adults complaining about being misled on all the sexual content and murder themes in the plot. People were dragging their kids out of the theater in droves. I got to see it only once and then my mom forbid me to see it again. Now that I'm old enough to understand what I'm looking at, I gotta say, this movie really does stink.

Well, it CAN work, I'm not saying that it can't. However, I personally am not a big fan of horror at all and I can't picture a new "Cool World" as a "horror" film. The reason why is because there was another live action/animated film that came out the same year as "Cool World" called "Evil Toons." That film was a B-grade 'haunted house' film involving a killer Toon. It executed the "Horror" concept very poorly, so I actually doubt that a new "Cool World" could work that way. Maybe a Love Story?
eu quero esse filme dublado e completo..onde posso achar?
I saw this movie at the theater when it first came out. And also liked the soundtrack at the time. That I ended up buying the soundtrack on cassette.
Actually he says "'Noids' do not have sex with doodles" but I still agree, he'd have jail me for a million years!
I like this movie. It's kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. And I am a longtime Ralph Bakshi fan. And it is better than Twilight.
On a Friday afternoon after school (I was probably in second grade at the time), I went into my room and turned on the TV. I was flipping through the channels when I happened upon HBO and this movie was on. I was just sitting on my bed watching this and couldn’t help but wonder what the heck it was. My dad came home from work and walked by my bedroom when I called him in to see if he could identify what movie it was, and that’s when he told me it was Cool World. That was my introduction to this movie, and I’ve never forgotten it. It’s far from being a great movie, but I by no means think it is God awful. I’ve said it before, it had potential. But due to interference at the hands of the studio and the producer, it was unable to live up to its potential. When I first saw it at 7 or 8 years of age, I was rather blown away at how animated and live action characters were interacting with one another. I actually saw this before seeing Roger Rabbit lol. Also, the animation struck me as being unique. I am now a pretty big fan of Ralph Bakshi’s style of animation since coming across some of his other work. I think this was the first movie I saw that had Kim Basinger in it. Even at a young, tender age I thought she was a knock out. She may have very well been my first crush lol. I actually thought she turned in a decent performance. I thought she brought the level of sass, attitude, and seduction that was required of the character. All in all, this move is a guilty pleasure of mine, and it’s nice to know that I’m not alone. Everyone is of course entitled to their own opinions, but you can’t help it if you still get something out of it.

Whoa! So now I see how "The Mask" comics differ from the movie. I myself am partial to the Jim Carrey and the style of humor that was in it. That's cool! I'm aspiring to become a filmmaker myself. I have made a short film (I'll be uploading it to KZread in the future), a cooking video, and a short series about a local museum. I have a question. If you had a idea for a remake of any film in particular, and if you wanted to sell it, is there a legal way to go about it? Or is it impossible?
"It's a living" directly lifted from Roger Rabbit.
I didn't even know this existed til Brian Tyree Henry mentioned it in the Radio 1 Interview lol
I remember this trailer from when I was a kid.I thought it was weird then, but it is scary now that I am older.
Me and my other half watched this last night because it was on Netflix. We were really weirded out by some of the cartoons but had to keep watching it! 😂😂 Wouldn't watch again though.
Note the director of cinematography is John Alonzo. There's a super excellent bio of him on KZread. He studied with the greats, and went on to be the guy behind the camera for Chinatown. A great bio to watch.
I wonder how many sick children in hospitals got nightmares from watching this movie. Seriously, Kim Basinger wanted this movie to be toned down to PG-13 so she could show it to sick children in hospitals, and the executives agreed.

The origanl script was even more dark, The film was originally pitched as an animated horror film about an underground cartoonist who fathers an illegitimate half-human/half-cartoon daughter, who hates herself for what she is and tries to kill him.
Peter Gunn theme... sounds like a mix/alternate version of The Art of Noise rendition
Did not care too much for the film but the soundtrack was amazing!
It'll be cool to check out that short you've made :) I'm not really sure how to pitch a remake to a major studio. If I would give advice to a fellow filmmaker, I would say start small. The people who start off directing Super-8 indie flicks and TV movies are worth the praise they receive (e,g. Steven Spielberg), but some directors go through the dark side and start off with big bucks and CGI robots beating the shit out of each other (obviously Michael Bay is the perfect example).

one freaky early 90s movie
Don't worry, I will put my first short film up on KZread whenever I can. I made it back in Middle school. If that's not starting out small, I don't know what is, LOL! You're right, Steven Spielberg started small, his first major film was a TV movie called "Duel." Then came "Jaws," which is legendary for having THE most troubled production in movie history. I myself liked the first two "Transformers" movies. The third film ,however, really lagged in the human character department.

If you like this movie, you should watch Pixels. It's like a video game version of this film.
@choipark6067

Pixels was another disappointment. It had a lot of potential but fell short because they didn't pick an audience to cater to when they were writing the script. The creators seemed to not know if they wanted it to be a "for kids" kind of movie or cater to the 30-something adults that actually understand the irony in the elements of the classic games they featured into the show. Like for instance, Paper Boy riding down the street throwing newspapers at random people. I laughed my arse off when I saw that. Show me a kid who was only born this century who gets why that's funny?
Quite similar to the original "Mask" comics where the Mask would massacre his/her victims in outlandish ways. I'm actually thinking of doing a reboot to the "Mask" franchise, keeping it close to the original, bloodier comics by Dark Horse. I already wrote a brief summary of the first film to a potential franchise.

You see a new "Cool World" as an Indie film. Eh, whatever floats your boat. The horror concept actually is appropriate for an Indie film setting. Personally, and that is if the horror concept isn't used, I see it as a big-budget film. One that has hand-drawn animation on the same level as "Roger Rabbit" and acting & storytelling that are on a Steven Spielberg level. Like I said before, and I know it sounds crazy, but I picture a remake/reboot of "Cool World" as a Love Story.
