Cool Nomai Tech You May Have Overlooked

Ойын-сауық

Im not sure what took me so long to make this video. But I really enjoyed going through and focusing on things the nomai used in their day to day lives. Some of the tech is still a bit of a mystery, but we can still appreciate what they do!

    It gets better... Solanum quickly deduces that you are carrying a device which translates written Nomai text, despite not seeing it in operation before she creates some text for you to translate. She also creates an easy-to-interpret icon representing you in an instant... the other symbols could have come from some kind of clip art library, but not that one. Wish I could run back to the library and say "Teach me to *write* Nomai script, in less than twenty minutes!"

    Well, things are a bit odd on the qm. There really isnt such a thing as quickly. Or slowly. Time is meaningless. But yeah. Making a stone that represents us is basically proof they can make them at will. Good point bud.

    Cool video! One connection you didn't discuss: At 8:20 you said that we don't find any tools which the Nomai used for mining. But if you look at the bottom of the Timber Hearth mines, you'll see neat circles of rock taken out of the walls, and the holes are about the same diameter as the Artificial Gravity Wells. I think they used the wells for mining, using high-power versions to pull the rock out of the ground and then draw the pieces up. At Timber Heath there is still a horizontal and then vertical well, like a conveyor belt for mined stone. Though the Timber Hearth stone was for the Ash Twin project, we can find circular holes about the same size in many other places in the system, so maybe they did this for regular building materials too.

  • @sigismasigisma

    I always assumed their third eye moves independently and is the one using the balls to activate stuff. It makes sense from a game perspective (cause you will need to hold stuff and cannot use the action button at all time, especially at the end) but also makes sense as to why Nomai would have it. Why would they pass an easy, hands free way to interact with stuff while carrying more warp cores, especially if they can do it with their third eye?

  • @JohnPablob

    Just wanted to express my appreciation for your videos. I study Language & Linguistics but decided to do my bachelor’s paper on storytelling in video games. I haven’t narrowed it down further than that yet, although I’ve got a few ideas, but it’s really difficult to find proper scholarly sources on videogames, sources that actually treat video games like an interesting piece of art in all its complexity (at least compared to articles on Jane Eyre or Shakespeare). One of my ideas is to research alternative types of storytelling, of which Outer Wilds obviously is a prime example. The lack of proper sources on Google Scholar for example really demotivates me to start researching, but watching your videos makes me feel like I can be part of the conversation too, even though my focus will be completely different from yours. So yeah, thanks, for diving into the lore and technology of the nomai for us, and for keeping us hooked long after we finished the game ^_^

  • @TheLoreExplorer

    @TheLoreExplorer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Wow. This is so kind. And very interesting lol. I understand why lack of official sources is demotivating. But I kind of get why thats the case. Video games have many different ways to tell a story, and multiple stories can be told in one experience. Some play throughs are very long and trying to figure out whats going on at times can be hard. Also, I see a reason for lack of any official study in this area being a motivating idea. Itd sort of be like starting your own field of study. At least if im understanding you right. If you ever need help understanding something in the game let me know! Though I doubt youd want my help for linguistic analysis lol.

    Possibly the liquid gold is activated by electrical charges? Somewhat similar to how you can make shapes with sound frequencies and sand. The pools have a power source from the eye tracking orb which could give it shape and the stones have a thing on the side of them and when the 2 rocks spin they connect the electrical charge.

    That was a solid review of their day-to-day tech! The one exception that stood out to me was the gravity walkways (patterned glowing surfaces), though that seems like a generalization of the gravity stone technology. None of their devices seem to need active power sources, from the distress beacons to the gravity tech to whiteboards, all seem to be trucking along fine after several hundred thousand years, which is wild. I did like that we get to see multiple generations of technology; e.g. the gravity canons and ships were useful until they re-invented warp technology.

    5:40 They DEFINITELY don't use gravity crystals for one clear reason - they're all over the sunless city! The gravity crystal tech was discovered from Brittle Hollow's rocks, which is why the Hanging City uses plenty of crystals and the Sunless City uses none - but they both use those gravity wells you talk about. Although its possible that when the escape pod colonies reunited, they shared technology and built them into the Sunless City later, the fact that the Sunless City uses no gravity crystals is pretty damning evidence to support my theory. Additionally, they both had access to gravity cannons, though these might have been built after reuniting, because they also both had warp abilities which were revolutionised by the Brittle Hollow colony ::)

    hi TLE! i have a small point of contention with your point about the nomai eye. simply put, the fact that the nomai wondered "what the hearthian's fourth eye does" paired with the fact that it does not have any extraordinary function is exactly the same as us two-eyed humans wondering what the nomai third eye does, when there is very scant evidence to prove it does anything other than see!

  • @TheLoreExplorer

    @TheLoreExplorer

    Жыл бұрын

    I have a more recent video on this. "Is the Nomais third eye special" or something like that. There are a few solid hints the Nomais 3rd eye does something special aside from their seemingly random question about the 4th eye. Which I largely ignored for a long time. Specifically on the sun station. They mention "seeing infinitesimally small surface changes that were barely visible. Even to the third eye". Which imo is a solid , if not definite, indication it does do something different/special. We also know they do and know quite extraordinary things. Such as imbuing information into stones with their staff with nary a word and hardly any movement. Or using projection pools and actually being able to sort of see whatever location youre projecting to. We also see them with telekinetic powers of sorts. None of this proves anything. But their vast knowledge and abilities could be explained by a new capability that evolved only after generations of space travel. And we know their third eye specifically, even if only symbolically, is where they depict info transfers via the statue. When the loop occurs we see the statue and all the memories pour into their third eye. Along with the notion that they are seemingly enlightened. Or in other words "They have their third eye opened". Just all the little things together paint a deeper picture than just a throw away wondering line.

    I'm not fully convinced that the Nomai staves are what allow them to manipulate and rearrange matter. I feel like they have the innate ability to manipulate matter (and even see matter to an extent with which other beings can't, like using their third eye as you mentioned), and they use the staves as appendages just because it's more convenient than putting the staff down on the ground to do things. I think that the staff does help manipulate matter more precisely, in order to draw glyphs and icons for example (much like we can cut ordinary material with our hands but the action is more precise with say, a knife or a scissor), but they aren't at all the source of their "telekenetic" abilities.

    How do we know the Nomai haven't discovered gravity crystals before they arrived at the solar system? It seems like they often used the crystals as a sort of "quick and dirty" form of gravity alteration, much easier to pick up, use, re-use, and/or leave behind than the more intricate "gravity pathways". It's pretty likely, to me, that the Nomai would use the crystals when they're exploring a new planet or solar system back when they traveled through space, and that just... Translated conveniently to the way things worked here in the solar system!

But we do know they need unique material to create. it requires crust from brittle hollow(or others like it) that has intrinsic gravitational properties inherent to it. And if they knew about that they likely wouldnt of waited so long to create them while stranded on brittle hollow. they could of also used them is the vessel or escape pods if it was something they already had.

    @@TheLoreExplorer super old comment, but isn't it explicitly said in the bramble pod logs that they had gravity crystals as standard kit? They use them to create a path from the pod to the signal in bramble (you follow their glow to find them huddled round the seed), and the logs from brittle hollow mention using them to create a path from their escape pod to the spot they built the hanging city- we follow them to find the city from their pod.

    @@MysterousBear no? there is no gravity crystals in the vessel, brambles escape pod 3, or anywhere in bramble. The Nomai left lights as a trail to follow if they needed a way back, which is what we follow to find them. the path to the hanging city is indeed grav crystals. but the path to the temporary city from the escape pod is made from wood. The Nomai discovered/invented gravity crystals on brittle hollow from its crust. so there is basically no way they had them when they arrived.

Of course having that line on the outside of the suit increases the chance that the suit's air supply is cut. Though now I'm wondering *why?* Why it was intentionally made on the outside? All the suits and helmets are the same (correct me if I'm wrong). Was there some kind of modularity in the suits or functional sacrifice that warranted the suits have that line on the outside? Or did the designer just not think about the implications of having the air line on the outside of the suit?

    Hello, I am CreativeName, and this, is my abomination of a comment. That seems neat, but I feel like we are in the caveman territory, trying to understand what modern tech is. Or, worse, we are in the dolphin category, not even having the same anatomic structure and maybe perceiving color differently, for instance. Well, while we may end up with a pretty neat ideas, we still may think that a computer only has 1 button, which turns it on, making it a worse version of the light bulb. Or that the computer screen is the processing unit, or that the video call is teleportation, or that the video player is time travel. Of course I am taking it to the extremes, but let me offer a few different ideas, which still have this problem. Gravity tech: a lot of Nomai stuff manipulates gravity, but (unless we see the names in the game code) some of the tech might be other forces based, maybe magnetic, maybe micro structure based. Those include: switch spheres, gravity wells, Nomai shuttle landing beams. The liquid (?) display thingy: it may be just an elaborate 3d monitor. It may just arrange the liquid into shapes in any conceivable way: gravity, micro, wait, I already named them. The projection pools and boards: I think that the conversations are stored either on the boards the conversation were on or some kind of main server. The projection stones are nothing more then a username, IP, tag, whatever you want to call it. This would explain being able to access a conversation using any copy of a stone. For instance, you can read the ATP-Mine conversation from the Mine board using the: ATP stone at Mines, ATP stone at the probe tracking module, ATP stone at the statue workshop. Any ATP stone will do, is what I am saying. The switch balls: I don't know if they have electricity in them, maybe it's some form of energy, maybe it's just some "chips", determining your looking position and responsible for movement, maybe it's just an indicator, which lights up like a light bulb wire. While we may rule out some theories, like the information of projection conversations being stored on projection stones, can you see I actually disagree with that yet, we still may end up with a lot of conflicting theories, which we have no way to differentiate between. Some of it may even not have been though through during the development process. Some may rely on fields of physics we don't yet know about.

    1.) This is obviously less of a deep dive and more of a shallow view of many technologies i feel were overlooked. 2.) ill note if you go back in the video and in our conversations on discord i literally never said the conversations were stored in the stones. I said info was. Which it is.(What location the stone connects to/is the key to which conversation) 3.)I literally said in the video, when solanum put visual info on the stones "This is what we see with the projection stones too". Proving days ago, when i wrote the script, the conversation being stored in the stone was never even considered, and thats something you completely made up on your own and ran with. 4.)As Nettakrim and i sort of figured out in about 10 minutes, it seems the projection stones all have a location on them. The board to plug them into has a stone built in, which makes them a pair. We see the conversation between that combination when we plug them in. I think the conversations are stored in the base(or built in stone) connected to the board. Thats maybe what you were trying to say, but i took it as the actual board itself. 5.)I still think the information is sort of isolated on those bases. I dont think there is some kind of nomai internet where its all stored like the memories. But I could be wrong.

    right. this would actually be both bases. or the built in stones. Btw this is unrelated to this video but my theory is that the universe is eternal (which is kind of pointed out at the fact that we see the big bang of a child universe at the end of the game). So as far as we know, black holes only grow in size and keep on eating matter and energy. Slowly black holes will merge into one giant black hole and the mass which the black hole ate creates only one child universe. Every separate black hole transports planets, stars and other matter to this new universe (in pieces... literally atoms or even quarks or gluons) and we know that time is linear but when we are looking at multiple black holes, time is flowing normally for us on this side. Over on that side, the entire lifespan of our universe condenses into only a fraction of time moments after the big bang. So mass and energy are conserved. The mass of the massive black hole which has now replaced the entirety of our universe will now slowly decay it's mass by Hawking radiation and will transmit inside through the black hole to the child universe and this energy somehow converts itself into dark energy and dark matter which is ever lasting in the child universe's lifespan and will cause the acceleration of the child universe (just like ours). And this process is eternal. We are constantly looping through one big bang which creates another universe only for it to do the same. Thus time is eternal too. Time which can only be perceived by a conscious observer is a byproduct of the energy produced by the decaying giant black hole from the mother universe converting itself into dark matter, dark energy, light and matter in the child universe and is the mediator between all of them. Oh and immediately after the child universe is created, it attains properties like emergence, entropy and particles existing as both wave and matter at the same time. The quantum phenomena which the double slit experiment exposes is only an emergent behavior between consciousness (which is also emergent and quantum in nature) and the wave properties of particles.
