Cook Serve Delicious fans do NOT like Cook Serve Forever...

Ойындар

Cook Serve Forever released as a brand new IP from the creators of Cook, Serve, Delicious! and its got some wildly mixed reviews. The sad truth is that despite some of their criticisms being wildly out of pocket, they're right about the game not being ready, but they're right for the wrong reasons.
This is more or less a review of Cook Serve Forever that also serves to talk a bit about the situation going on with the game's launch into early access.

    It's like I put in my review of the game: CSF in its current state feels more like a proof-of-concept than a full-fledged game. There's virtually no sense of progression, absolutely _zero_ challenge, and the gameplay quickly becomes monotonous as there's very little to differentiate different dishes, unlike in the CSD games where virtually every dish type has its own distinct way of prepping and cooking them that adds a unique flavor and challenge to each one. For instance, in CSD, prepping and cooking burgers is a markedly distinct experience from chicken breasts, both are distinct from lasagna, and so on. In CSF, if you removed everything from the screen except the button prompts, I couldn't tell you what I'm prepping at any given time because everything is effectively identical. The best way I know to put it is this: the CSD games typically focus heavily on gameplay, with the story being more or less an afterthought (though _3_ took major steps towards rectifying this, and from the sound of things _Re-Mustard_ will continue that trend). CSF is the exact opposite: it focuses heavily on the story, to the point where the gameplay feels like an afterthought. I'm optimistic that, by the time this game leaves Early Access, they'll have figured out a way to make it accessible for newcomers, yet engaging for seasoned CSD vets like myself. For the time being, though, there's just not enough here yet to give it the proverbial stamp of approval.

    I am a longtime fan who started with the original CSD many years ago and I don't mind experimentation, but sometimes it doesn't work (i.e. Silent Hill: The Room). Making a rhythm-based spinoff of CSD isn't a bad idea but I only see four buttons and that looks too simple to me. Also, it doesn't look like the mechanics have much to do with the food choices. I also agree that the progression is too slow. It's a shame, because the art and music look great. However, it's not worth $30 in its current iteration. X-COM: Chimera Squad is a good example of a spinoff that works well to attract players who are new to a series. It was a lot cheaper than the main X-COM games, it introduced a fun new mechanic (the breach system), and while it was noticeably easier than the main games it was still fun to play because the alien squad members were interesting and amusing.

    My favorite part of CSD is being able to learn the different dishes and the more I practice the more routine and better I get at it. I don't really see that with CSF.

    as a loyal og csd fan, thank you for this honest non homophobic approach to this review. I will be purchasing this as i have all the previous from this dev. I actually am so excited for a more relaxed story driven gameplay- because csd1-3 has SO much replay opportunities. I think it def needs from final work so i will wait.

    I'm someone who's been with this franchise for a while, and almost this exact thing happened with every Cook Serve game after the first one (minus the homophobia). CSD 2 got a lot of backlash from fans of the first game because 2 took a lot of focus away from running a restaurant and put it towards working at lots of themed restaurants with fixed menus. They also went from having 30 foods with upgrades that can add more complex recipes into the mix to the system of having tons of food types that have all the recipes already. Then CSD 3 comes out and you had CSD 2 fans who missed the fixed menu campaign mode and CSD 1 fans who think 3 isn't true enough to the original for their tastes. I think it sucks that the devs basically have multiple fan bases baying for their blood no matter what choices they make, especially since I think all of these games are wonderful and special in their own ways.

    @@NotAbsolutelySure It's certainly an unenviable position, but I at least take solace in the fact that CSD 2 & 3 eventually found their audiences. I'm sure CSF will find it's audience when the time is right.

    I did criticize the second game, but largely because it felt rushed and it lacked the charm of the first. It felt like two separate games awkwardly smooshed together. The first game had some cute side stuff to do as well as a rags-to-riches type of story, while the second had some emails you could read but they didn't do anything, and those were added at the last minute. It's still fun to go for golds in Chef for Hire, though.

  • @TheGeoshark

    @TheGeoshark

    @Ahrimane That's basically my exact feelings on CSD 2. Chef for Hire is a lot of fun (when you're not getting screwed over by 4 trash chores spawning at the same time and breaking your combo), but the Cook Serve Delicious mode feels almost completely pointless. That's why I think 3 is the better of the latter 2 games in the Delicious trilogy. It takes everything good from 1 & 2 (themed days, holding stations, the hilarious recipe descriptions, customizing your space, the apocalyptic world building from 2), leaves out the stuff that didn't work or add to the experience (the pointless emails, the random chores, the whole second mode that doesn't aid in progression), while making great new additions of it's own (food truck attacks, categorizing food based on complexity, funny dialogue from Whisk and Cleaver, the upgrade tree) to make something new yet familiar. It's everything a sequel should be (even if I still prefer the first game for purely rose tinted nostalgic reasons).

    I was a huge fan of CSD 1&2, but I hated 3 for its visual novel-style storytelling, and those robots were really lame. I think I won't like CSF because it ramps up on that part that made the game worse for me. My optimal Cook Serve Delicious would be the Dark Humor variant where you have to hunt, butcher, and cook endangered species and have to dodge health investigations and such. To me, CSF is a lame down and cozyfication of the original, which is a hard and very stressful game. I play CSD because it's difficult, and I often think about how overwhelming it is, especially if you want perfect scores on some levels. Which I then skip because it's insane to juggle some food combos without any bad orders in those games, and to be honest, I think that CSD 2 is sometimes harder than Dark Souls 1-3 & Elden Ring, Sekiro & Bloodborne together, but that may just be me, I guess. Anyway, I don't think CSF is a game for me; therefore, I don't think I have to leave a review about something that clearly isn't meant for someone like me. Personally, I hope they go back to their roots and improve the game from there instead of adding a story that I don't care about. But in the end, it's their game. Even if they are the only ones playing it, if they like it, why prohibit them from creating what they like? Because, as you say in your video, it's not a game for the fans of the game; it's for a casual visual novel audience who likes the soundtrack and likes the art style.

  • @NotAbsolutelySure

    based best move is to let them make their game clearly meant for a new audience, review bombing just because it isnt for the CSD crowd fucked over the CSF success as well as possibly fucking over any future CSD might have, really lame :/
