Hi Friends!
Today I'm sharing what a traditional russian mennonite sunday dinner looks like! These recipes bring me right back to my childhood and I hope you enjoy watching them "come to be" as well as a little Mennonite history lesson!

My Polish culture calls these "pierogies"...we usually fill them with a mix of mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese, but I've had them with cottage cheese filling. Also, saurkraut and potato filling, sausage filling, and even prune preserves (Lekvar). It is so nice to see young women honoring their traditions like you do! Keep up the good work!

Hi! I too am from the Russian Mennonite line. I found you on here today and got so excited to see you make what my family line knows as Verenika. My mom used a circle cutter and so ours is more half moon shaped. The gravy is simply bacon undrained (if not insane amount of grease) onions and cream. My ancestors came from Prussia to Canada to Minnesota. I have a cookbook made from that era of recipes. I would be happy to copy the pages and send them to you if you are curious😊
As someone with Russian heritage, I am saddened at how some people are bashing all things Russian. What is going on now has nothing to do with the people. It is the corrupt government and has been going on a long time ( both sides). I am saddened that the Ukrainian people as well as Russians are being affected so horribly by greedy governments😢.

The Main Stream Media is responsible for spewing the propaganda and lies about Russia. If anyone is smart they would know that. It’s just a political football. The US government is corrupt that’s the elephant in the room. People are awakening to that and sad it is. No Russian person or people should feel guilty or ashamed of anything. It has been admitted that the Russian army has bombed bio weapon labs. If that is the truth then Bravo to them. Bad people have been doing bad things in Ukraine. Political people in US want a war to happen and Bad people in Ukraine government are harming the people and blaming it on Russia. Here is a fact the truth is that 80,000 Ukrainians fought alongside and for Hitler. Why did they help and fight with the Nazis? There is still an Army core that calls themselves Nazis in Ukraine. So we should at least be asking the question Why did 80,000 Ukrainians go over and fight with Hitler? Second question why did the US citizens’ taxes go to fund, own and operate bio weapons labs in Ukraine? Why are we in Ukraine? No, the Russians aren’t the cause of everything bad it’s just propaganda. Russia has a hard history it’s people have had rough times. If any American wants to criticize or blame Russia for anything they need to do their homework and start studying what’s been going on in this country first before calling out another country. Intelligent people know that there are good people everywhere. Most people don’t want wars. I love to hear about other cultures and love to see Russian recipes. Blessings to you for your comment!

@@prettylady995 yes and the US government is giving them billions, yes BILLIONS of dollars! How about helping the veterans of the US who live in poverty? How about helping US CITIZENS who are burdened with the cost of living right now? Why? Because Biden is soooo corrupt and in with the Ukraines. This makes me so mad! 😡
Yes! My grandma made vrenika. My uncle used to smoke our sausage. Grandma would make Bubat.

This is the first time I have watched your KZread channel and I thought it was very interesting. My mom side of the family was from Russia they immigrated to the US just before the revolution. We would do a pierogi which use that same cheese mixture in it but it was made with a crêpe and it was fried and then we use sour cream over the top. The other two mixture fillings we were used was a sauerkraut filling and a beef lung filling. Thank you for the wonderful memory. 😊. This is also the first time I’ve ever heard of a Russian Mennonite.

Also, the best way to get tasty schmaunt fat is to brown the farmer sausage in a skillet, then remove the sausage and pour your cream into the skillet. All the little bits of sausage give it amazing flavour. I’m from southern Manitoba.
Everything looks absolutely delicious!

It is so neat how women can continue to explore and teach their heritage through food and homemaking! I am from PA, with a Dutch background; of course being exposed to Amish culture. My husband is an Alaska Native. While living in AK, I have been introduced to Russian Orthodox believers who wear a covering similar to what you were describing. Different in that they are very ornate and always colorful. It would make sense how believers had to migrate and move through the years because of various reasons. Certainly trying to maintain their culture even when resources and environment is different. Thanks for sharing some of your history and experiences with us! *Megan Glover
I am also the same kind of mennonite as you :) we often make fruit filled Wereknakje with plum or cherry filling. Or fruit and cottage cheese. it is so delicious and not as sweet as the jelly ones.
Loved this video! I grew up with vereneki. I've personally never made them, but buy them locally when I'm in the mood for them. We eat them with shmont fat and strawberries. We bake home smoked varsh instead of sausages. I find it so interesting how cultural food varies even from community to community. Enjoyed watching this! ~Joanne

I think every traditional cuisine has their filled dough. Venedeta(?), pierogi, ravioli, blintzes. So much the same and so different and so delicious. I love the idea of cake with warm fruit topping and cold ice cream. Thanks for the bit of education regarding Mennonite origins. I often wondered why the headwear was different.

Looks like a great meal! We have the farmers sausage with pierogies atleast 1-2 times a month...and yes, it needs to be served with the cream gravy....but I've never added chicken bouillon...only cream, salt pepper and flour to thicken.

Oh wow. Hello!! I am actually from Moldova the country that is on the border with Ukraine, and yes keep praying for Ukraine and the people of Ukraine. So many dying. We just helped one family move here, and it's horrible what the russian presid.ent is doing. He is such an anti-Christian guy, there is no freedom in Russia and he hates everyone who loves the Lord. I moved to the USA 17 years ago, and happily married the American sweet hubby that I met in my country when his oldest brother married my friend :) God has a sense of humor. Love your content!!!! I love your channel. I just discovered it today and will subscribe for sure!! Hey! So fun to find another Russian Mennonite! I absolutely know what Vereneki is. So delicious. Where in Canada were you from?
I grew up eating varanakje as well. And I like ketchup with mine 😋 as for the Schmaunt faat, I always put sour cream in mine so that it thickens just a little. If it doesn't do enough then I add a little corn starch. I need to try it with the parsley though. It looks delicious 😋

I too have eaten wereniki all my life, my mom would always make enough so we could fry the leftovers in butter the next day, which is extra delicious. I am a fellow Mennonite from the Russian 'strain'. My dad always puts ketchup in his Somma Borscht, which seems crazy to me, but I didn't know people put ketchup on wereniki! But I guess it's like pasta and I like ketchup on pasta sometimes.

Steph, you always create such beautiful videos! This one was no exception, you did a wonderful job! I also grew up eating vereneki, we would either make the traditional cottage cheese ones or my personal favourite, the ones with mashed potatoes, cheese and bacon :) As far as schmaunt fatt, we make a roux of butter and flour and then add a combination of both heavy whipping cream as well as milk. The parsley looked like such a great addition, I will give it a try:)
