Frankly tho the idea of turning trucks into small locomotives kinda makes sense on a small scale private line kinda railroad. Trucks are inexpensive, chuck them on rails and have them pull stuff around your small little railway. A legit locomotive requires more money to buy and mantain and needs a specialized mechanic, with a converted truck you just need a regular mechanic

There's actually a missing beam on the cow catcher. The original photo it has a brace behind it that forms an A frame on either end that is missing on the rebuild. As this is clearly a structural piece it may be a good idea to add it to the build. Same with the missing break pads present in the drawing that's not in the picture.

It looks like the axle spacers were set up so that you could bolt on road wheels to the outside of the train wheels. That way you could drive on and then lift the truck off of the tracks and drive away.

That yellow locomotive probably had such heavy doors because it may have been ex-Army and doors were made to stop small arms fire. Another reason may have been that it was an industrial locomotive in a steel refinery and the doors were made heavy duty for the safety of the driver.
