Converting a Higher Order ODE Into a System of First Order ODEs
This video shows how to convert a fourth order ODE into a system of four first order ODEs, and how to convert a second order initial value problem in to a system of first order ODEs and initial values for them.

Been struggling with this for a couple hours and this made it clear. Thanks!
Wow - this one was a bit complex and crashed my computer. Back to mountain bike videos for me.
The most useful and concise math video that I've seen in a while
Imagine online courses in university only teach you the content of textbook but never teach you how to use these knowledge to solve the problem and put those thing directly into the test/quiz which is extremely bullshit, even just the context of textbook they can't even teach the things in a clear way to make you understand the stuff intuitively. Thanks again this video makes everything clear.
Bless your soul I hope you are still teaching 🙏🏻
Thank you very much, very clear and concise!
thank you for this simple and amazing video
Your video was helpful for setting up the problems which is the hardest part but I wish you actually solved it for a general solution
this was so clear. thanks!
Thanks for this video tutorial of conversion of higher order ordinary differential equation into system of 1st order ODEs
U made it easy... Thanks 👍
Extremely helpful, thank you!!

Gregg you absolute legend
Simple and clear!
Really nice way of doing this!
Really great!
awesome vid!
A splendid work
Well explained my brother
great....very helpful...
Gregg the man! The waterman Thank you
Thank you so much
Gregg, Nice and clear. Well done and thank you. (You are now a footnote to a footnote of a University of Texas MOOC, so you should be getting more customers from here on out.)
Really helpful, love from India😍
thank you!!
THANK YOU
Thank you! :)
Nice explanation.... Bit tricky at times but still understandable....
in the 2nd qsn cost shoud be mintus to the eqn after x 2 derivative is taken to right hand side
Man I'm getting really mixed feelings. On the one hand this video is 10/10 perfect explanation but on the other hand why the fuck am I going to university if I can learn the same material better on KZread for free? Thank you for posting this!

Same dude.
Why don’t you consider the coefficients of x2 when rewriting x1 prime? Same goes for x2 prime and x3 prime
Love u man
best ever do more videos please
how to convert higher order coupled non linear equations into system of first order differential equations
What do you do if the initial Higher Order ODE has a constant in it? How does it fit into the first order system
You helped me a lot.... Thank u
very good
Please, how to convert fourth order ODEs to second order ODEs
super cool video man, so fucking good, best video ever, yeee, i mean it
It fine but if you could carry on to show us if we need to write this intial condition vector in the end equation !!! I have been looking for this few days now with no hope
does this work for nonlinear systems?
awesome
can you explain how you made the vector for cos3t? I dont understand why the first component is zero

nevermind, I think its because your equation for x'1 has a zero where the cos3t would be

I Also don't understand why he put cos3t into another matrix, is it because it's a constant or what
Nice ,
You sound like Steve Kerr, 👍
What is X(suffix1)=X; X is first derivative, what is X(suffix 1)?

sachin t I'm not sure what you are asking. Can you point me at a time when the thing you are asking about first appears?

X(suffix 1) and X(suffix 2) and so on... are just different variables he created. They could easily be A, B, C, D,... instead.

You are right. After I retire next year I'll try to work on my "production values." These videos were made as efficiently as I could, in the midst of planning lessons and grading. My intended audience was just my students, but I'm glad that others may have benefited.

Too busy enjoying retirement, everyone will either have to suffer through the background noise, or find another video! 🙂
