My dad ran a yard care business in the 1970's and we threw all grass clippings in the back of his 1970 Ford truck. The grass was cleaned out about weekly or when the truck bed was full. Add summer weather at 100 degrees F and the smell was awful. At times the grass would heat up and grass juice would drip out of the bed. Over a period of 5-10 summers the truck bed was destroyed by the degrading grass clippings. No Rhino lining...

I throw my clippings around the trees at the farm. Makes a huge difference on quality of the tree, height and thickness. Stinks if you wait too long to dump them but worth it. Also helps with weeds.

@@Agent5061 Nifty idea. Time for a new lawnmower.
I bag too! Even after watching you for a few years! Only because I find when I mulch the clippings seemed to suffocate the lawn, my mower would spit out chunks on turns, instead of a even distribution, and the mulch one dried would make my lawn look browner. I am in northern Nevada, so hot heat in summer. I sometimes save my clippings to add as compost to my vegie garden, or use as a top mulch for vegie garden to retain moisture. Here a bag of clippings dries out so fast with no moisture left in a few days. Very dry here compared to Florida! Welcome to the club!😊.
Allyn, I looked back on your previous videos and saw nothing about AWD walk behind mowers for the “older set” of yard owners. I have some slopes in my yard and as I aged I was pushing/pulling my walk behind mowers up the slopes and the riding mower I had was getting too difficult to maneuver in some of the close spaces. I sold them all and bought a Husqvarna AWD walk behind and it literally pulls me up the slopes and with its Honda engine is always an easy start. It might be time to do a video on mowers for the “older set”. I also have a small 2 HP MTD mower I can still maneuver for trimming in close places. It too is an easy start and light enough for an old fart like me. I really appreciate your past videos and you have helped me many times over the years improving my yard here in northern Michigan. Thanks for all you do and your hilarious ways of keeping me laughing. Laughter is still the “Best Medicine”. Dave, still mowing after 76 years and loving it.
I'm convinced the benefits of mulching outweigh the striping. Of course I use a striping kit too, that really helps. Great video Allyn. 👍
@Wittyusername82

Side discharge is the alternative. Still recycling the clippings while also having the best airflow through the deck which helps with the cut quality and striping.
When i bag my grass, i keep part of the clippings to use in my composter. I know everyone does not compost, but i have a lot of flower bed plants to feed.
I live in Sydney, Australia and we have a weekly "green bin" pickup which takes away clippings, pruning etc. During the peak growing time my weekly lawn mowing would fill about 50% of the bin. I always bag because it looks so much nicer.
When you bag it creates a suction/vacuum/airflow standing the grass blade up creating a really clean cut. It also helps tilt the grass blades more making the grass stripe better. I've noticed the same thing in my lawn . The clipping are a pain and I feel like I committing a crime not returning the clippings lol.
@larryseibold4287
2 жыл бұрын
yep. in mulch mode the suction/vacuum/airflow is greatly reduced, especially on high settings. That is why i went back to mostly bag mowing.
When you picked up a handful of the grass clippings in your truck and smelled it and almost gagged, I lost it 🤣

Because of PROS like you I took it upon myself to share my “MOWTIVATED MOWMENTS” in the yard…I’m here in Zone 9A….thanks for all you do brotha….love what you’re doing…
I am a big fan of both, bagging & mulching. I mow twice a week, mulching & not striping during my mid-week mow and then on the weekend (when I have more time), I’ll throw on the striper and bag my clippings and even do a doublecut to “burn” in those stripes. Then during the next mid-week mow, I’ll mow the opposite angle so I’m not creating any ruts or anything in the lawn and just continue the cycle from there. Best of both worlds...

Hey LCN, 👋. I got two big 36inch stumps in front lawn, going have them grinded down to current grass level. What do you recommend for "pre prep" addition to the current lawn? Thank you 😊
The only I bag if my lawn has fungus which is only 2 times a season. My yard buts up to woods and been putting the clipping and my wife notice the tree with the clipping the leaves wer dark green compaired to the other. Great compost!
🤣@3:44. Thankfully, my town picks up our clippings every week.
Many localities (where we live) have green pickup so this gets covered to compost or mulch and you can even pick that up free if you have a truck :)
I LOL'ed at that "F* u doug" part
I have a heavily shaded side yard where I'll lay clippings down (anyone know of an easy way to get rid of Virginia Creeper?). Or I put on my compost heap. I've mulched in the past so depends on whether I want compost. Also use them around trees (no I don't lay it up on the tree) or beds where I want to kill unwanted top growth.
I always bag my clippings. I have extremely natural high phos with sandy soil. Our waste management picks up yard debris weekly. Great info as always. 👊😎🌴

I use a big 42" lawn roller to lay stripes. Pull it behind my riding mower. Stripes are on point. St Augustine.
I cut about an acre. Always mulched but got a bagger last year. Honestly The mulching made a healthier looking lawn and required less chems. Going back to mulching but will throw the bagger on when laying down some sick stripes during peak growth season.
I bag all my clippings, but our city has free yard waste recycling. I’ve striped my lawn on EVERY cut with the bagger attached as you showed in the video. I’ll do wider stripes by doing 3 passes (rows) in one direction before I do 3 rows in the other direction. They’re about 4ft wide stripes and they look sharp. I’ll also stripe back-and-forth one week then on a 45-degree angle the following week. The stripes really pop a week after laying down the nitrogen fertilizer.
Its the suction. Bagging plus the high lift blade gets the grass to stand up better and a cleaner cut ensues. You would probably get a similar result side discharging. Great videos as always!
I love the double mow in the spring and fall. It gives me an excuse twice a week to escape the questions of a 3 year old daddy’s girl for an hour. I’ve found that bagging your 4 day mow and mulching 3 day gives you the best of both worlds. Your neighbors will be gawking and talking about your lawn all year long!
I do both but I mostly bagging when it's high or if the lawn in dirty...
Are there any good use cases for composted clippings or is the risk of weed formation too high?
I admit you got me and I thought the click bait was something else 🤣😆😃. Furthermore I keep thinking about gluing something to the back of my 42" Gravely Zero Turn Mower but My Bermuda Grass isn't known for striping either. You can see it for a hot minute and then it's gone.
I thinking is it possible to get a compost going and the clipping can get chew up quicker...then put the compost back to the lawn as top soil for organic feed?
The “f… you Doug” clip was hilarious 😂 😂

I’m glad u cleared that up. I was kind of scratching my head on that one.
I had a big Covid infection for about 2 weeks and my lawn went to crap because I really couldn’t mow or edge or anything. Today is the first day I am able to mow and it has been exhausting. Mowed at the highest setting and cleaned up the edges. In 2-3 days I will mow again and then try and keep up that schedule until it returns to normal. I just have a Cub Cadet XT-1 but it does ok- but mulching today was rough on it
I have a super recycler, SR4, it cuts awesome. I also have an AWD recycler that seems to cut as well if not the same. It’s seems heavier. I hate bagging, much more work! But, it’s been raining cats and dogs here all month! I think I hit a poodle! Lol!
Drop spreader, the fertilizer of your liking, and some planning you can have lawn stripes all year long. Then you can bag or not, it doesn’t matter.
That clip was hilarious! Had me rolling.
Bagging is the way to go! The clean look it offers is second to none. Throw your clippings in a garbage bag or your garbage.can and your done. For the people who claim mulching helps throw back nutrients into the lawn research indicates mulching all season long is the equivalent to one fertilizer application and to that I say, I'd rather bag all my clippings, get the clean look, and pay for the roughly $8 of fertilizer and apply it myself.
I use my clippings from my lawn bag in the rest of my garden. It mulches down to nothing and nourishes the soil
Sir Allyn, your St Augustine grass is looking like it should be displayed on the shelves with organic salads at GreenWise. Maybe a solution for your excess of clippings. You are welcome!

You need to build or buy a little compost shack. There are some good videos out there for it. Drop some earthworms, vegetable peels, other biological material into your compost box, mix it up every couple of weeks and grass clippings turn into the nicest soil you could ever want. The best ones have doors at the bottom you can open where good soil comes out while you drop your clippings and waste into the top.

Hey Allen, Great video! Keep throwin’ down like Rick James!🤙
I have been cutting laws since the late 1950s and I have never once bagged any grass. My lawns were nearly always the best looking ones in town. Also, a few years ago, I used to allow one of the local lawn care services to dump their clippings on the back side of my property - and man o' man, those clippings sure make some really good compost. BTW, if they are left piled very long, they will start "smoking", because they really heat up when they decompose.
The Timecutter makes nice stripes on it’s own. The county picks up lawn waste and make compost for sale.

I used to bag all the time until I got my grass healthy enough not to worry. I just make sure I don't cut when it's wet and use fungicide as a preventative in humid weather
I’ve noticed that when I bag the stripes are stronger and I think it’s because the the mower is getting heavier so and pushing down on the roller more

I’ve been saying this for years, mulching is great but does not lend itself well to cut quality and striping. Bagging is better but side discharge is where my mower really shines with cut quality and defined stripes. (Exmark Quest 50” ZTR). I hardly ever put my bags on anymore. Gatorblades and open deck! Let’ er fly!
In my area of florida they take yard waste on Thursdays whether or not its loose or in a can.
I know its not popular with the mulching fan boys, but I always bag for these reasons, better suction, cleaner cut, clean look. Luckily though we have yard waste pickup with our garbage/ recycling weekly. Also despite best efforts there is a little poa here and there, don't want to spread those seeds around the rest of the lawn.

*Allyn it's called trash/yard waste bags. Your garbage collection will pick up yard waste. Some people start compost piles.* I bag and mulch, both. I don't lose much goodness bagging, that I can't add back with Fert and micro nutrients. *Mulching is overrated.* It may not cause thatch but can be too much. If your lawn is growing fast even if you cut often (small clippings) it can be more than your lawn can eat or will decay. Your truck bed? That's happening in your yard. I do bag and mulch and vary every other time or 3rd time.
