What is junk silver premium today

If someone sells silver such as philharmonics and has a capital gain, it's reported on taxes. However if someone trades those philharmonics for gold eagles, are there any capital gains tax consequences or not because it was a trade and not cash? I would think there are no tax issues until that gold would be sold down the road? I'm curious how trades work?

For tax purposes a trade is considered 1 sell and 1 buy. The sell is obviously taxable.

Taxable and reportable are two different things. All capital gains on any coin sales are taxable. However only some bullion transactions exceeding specific thresholds have to be reported to the IRS by the dealer via a form 1099-B. These thresholds are available on the IRS website and can also be found most online dealers "Help section". Cash transactions over $10K are a separate matter but also have to be reported via a form 8300. For tax purposes there is no such thing as a trade as @frankabler stated: it is a sale and a purchase.

If you trade silver for gold how in the world would the feds have any say in that? You are not using their currency.
