Convert a PC Floppy Drive to work on AMIGA | Easy Mod

Convert a PC Floppy Drive to work on AMIGA | Easy Mod
Many PC floppy drive models can be easily modified in minutes to work on an Amiga computer.
I was in need of a working floppy drive for my Amiga 500 so instead of spending a fortune on an official Amiga compatible drive I decided to convert a £9.99 PC Floppy Drive to work on the Amiga!

I convert a (much cheaper) PC floppy drive to work with my Amiga with some quick and simple modifications. Thanks for watching!

You should see if you can convert a 2.88MB floppy to a 1.76MB. :)

This is brilliant. Can you use HD floppies with it? 1.44MB that is.

I would like to point out that a floppy drive that has been modded in this mannner will, in all likelyhood, also work with both Amstrad's CPC and PCW models, and the Sinclair ZX Spectrum +3. All you need is a proper cable, i.e. one with a 34-way edge connector for the Amstrad CPC and the Spectrum +3, or a 34-way to 26-way for the PCW machines.

Thanks for this. Gave me the confidence to convert a Sammy myself. Seems to be working so far too! :) Just need a 3D printer button and to find a way to fit it into my 1200 case as it's a tad bit larger than the stock drive I took out...

Hello ! 😀 👉 Thank you very much for your video and links also 👏👏👏 I did search «PC drive in amiga» in google and found your video, and I realised that I got exactly the same floppy by hazard !!! 👍 I had to take the EJECT button from the old Amiga floppy, and also to file / sand the metal support of the ejection button and also the shell around the button. This new reader replaces the one from the working A600, but which I put in the A1200 because it was the latter which had failed. Encore merci ! 🙂

They're not 100% compatible with certain track loading games (like the same problems with the Escom Amiga 1200) but still a brilliant solution.

Really cool! Please test and see if it works as a High Density floppy, too. You should be able to format it at 1.72MB if it works in HD mode

Really? Interesting! I am waiting on an external interface / cable so that I can have the gotek and the drive as DF0 and DF1 so i can do more testing. My only copy of WB 1.3 on floppy seems to be corrupted so I need to wait for the cable to make a new one.

It's not easy to recognise it at HD mode, because the HD floppys on Amiga were very special ones. They had internally a trick about reading the disk at half speed to do the read/write process, so i think there's not easy task to do the job. But anyway, the 99.999% of Amiga disks are written at 880Kb mode(double side/double density), so it is a little useless to test(and HD floppies work very slow on Amiga because that). Good video, i have used some Samsung drives on my Amigas and they work almost perfect, even with track-loading disks(Demos, etc...)

Brilliant tutorial, thank you! Would you happen to know if it's possible to convert TEAC FD-235HF drive? I heard that some Amigas had FD-235F inside but not sure about HF.

This might be a silly question, but is it possible to use this method to create a 'tower' of floppy drives? Back in the days a brand called "KCS" made a dual floppy drive in one container, but I was thinking; if you can turn one of these pc drives (which are there in abundance) into an Amiga drive and you have some skills in making a proper container, then you would have a nice 3 way stacked floppy drive holder. Which would be very nice, when reading multiple disks, or copying them etc.

I guess it may be possible. Not sure how many drives the Amiga can "see" and one time?

  • @RetroRecollections

What do you mean disk swapping? When it asks for next disk?

  • @10MARC

    @10MARC

I think he is asking if it actually detects a disk change. Amiga Floppies have a sensor to detect a change, hence the annoying click. In Workbench when you eject a disk, does the system detect it and sense a new disk is inserted, or do you have to use the "Diskchange" command from the Shell to tell it about the new disk?

@@10MARC I believe the cable from pin 2 is Rdy signal, so in my particular tests with those drives(i have done the mod for some of my Amigas), the disk change is properly detected. I have tested some 2-disk demos(Like Desert Dreams), and it works perfect, so it detects where you eject the disk and put another disk on the drive.

This drive does not work properly with the amiga. D-copy (4) shows an error code when reading for all sectors. The floppy boots but, obviously slower, copying no longer works.

@@RetroRecollections I did the same conversion on another Samsung SFD-321B floppy drive and it didn't work the same way. I’d be wondering what else D-copy reads about sectors. True, it works, but not properly, for me, this experience drives two Samsung SFD-321B floppy drives.
