Convert a Multi-focal Prescription to a Single Vision Reader

This week we cover the steps of converting a distance eyeglass prescription with a given add power to a single vision reader. Opticians routinely convert distance lens powers to eyewear designed for near or intermediate work. Here are step-by-step examples of the math involved in making that conversion.

    I have a progressive lens prescription. But, I do not know what does it mean by 'converting' the progressive prescription to Single lens. I know that the smaller ring like place under the lens will be missing (correct?). Does that mean that the power at that lower part lens will be spread to entire glass areas? Why do they do this? When I add the NV [or ADD?] to SPH, the addition affects the entire area of the glass, right? Wouldn't create abruption for the DV part of the prescription? naïve

    Hello my friend, What I mean that as a Canadian our country is colder and we feel the temperature gradient more than those who live in places where it is summer most of the time. That means have the need to use an anti-fog solution is not very practical. That is what I meant. What are the manufacturers who make lenses with anti-fog coating. Thanks for your creativity, and understanding.

    hey. I Kieron Grant and Carlitos Aldana is a lab tech from Belize city and my co-worker and I have been working with progressive lenses for quite some time. the problem we are encountering with the lenses is that both lens, (right & left) seems to come as a Right! which makes it difficult when cutting the left lens! to our knowledge of observation the left lens decentration is way off. making the pd impossible to reach the right full way it should! we sometimes have to push the left lens a little over to the front to have it in line to where we need the pd to be, and because of that it makes an invalid cut because the feelers of the machine could not read the lens because of the slight adjustment to make it correct! 🇧🇿🇧🇿🇧🇿🇧🇿

    What about the PD? I see Rxs with single PDs and some with PDs for left/right. When dealing with a multifocal for case 1- distance+reading, and case 2-distance+intermediate and going to reading eyeglasses or intermediate, what does one do with the PDs?

  • @LaramyKOptical

    @LaramyKOptical

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sorry Ronald - This one fell through the cracks on me... PD can be taken eye-to-eye = 1 number. Or center of nose to center of eye = two numbers. Just a more accurate method which is important in high powers and progressives. In lower powers, single vision and lined bifocals close is good enough.

    When you call it a multi focal prescription, is that the same as a bifocal where they have the little area at the bottom of the glasses with a different strength? My husband and I are bickering at each other over this. He says I do not need to add anything to the sphere value since they are bifocals. Maybe he is right. I hope to hear from you. Great video, btw.

  • @LaramyKOptical

    If you have a "Rx" with an add power shown as a separate number and you want bi-focals then you are all set, just head to the optician or (please no) online. If you want a pair of single vision reading glasses (not a bi-focal) then you do need to add the add to the sphere. If those numbers are low like +1.50 and +1.00 or -1.00 then OK to go online for them (single vision). If they are higher then see a pro. Hope that helps? May marital bliss be upon you. John

    There is no direct relationship between lens powers and the Snellen Chart. Mostly because we see with our brains not with our eyes. You are naturally farsighted and that middle 0.25/0.50 is negligible. Lucky You!

    Really reading, smaller print, paperback book go with +1.75. Computer, larger print, arms length go with +1.50. Combine that with your -0.50 you'd pick a +1.00 or a +1.25 off the shelf at the drugstore and see how it goes. You can self select for a few dollars or trial and error standing there. That second number --0.25 is nothing. I don't know what your left is...??? If it is nothing still try the same. The +0.25 for a PAL or progressive is from the 1990's, no need for it anymore and in fact works in the opposite way. Self select at the store and once you are happy choose the power that works and then maybe have a "real" pair made up. John

You just might need to hold something an inch or so closer or further away. Any decent optician should be able to help guide you. If you simply can't decide without "seeing" then ask them to trial-frame the two different add powers and decide which one you like better. Again - I doubt you will see much of a difference. John

    I just got glasses for the first time in my life. Bifocals!! Anywhoo...I need some readers and am confused. Will there be NO "Add" number when I fill out the prescription online? Will it be ZERO (once the calculations are done)? My prescription: OD (sphere 1.00) (Cylinder -1.50) (Axis 090) (Add 2.00) OS (sphere PL) (Cylinder -0.75) (Axis 090) (Add 2.00) Readers per your conversion and my sketchy math skills: OD (sphere 3.00) (cylinder -1.50) (axis 090) DO I INCLUDE THIS (Add 2.00)? OS (sphere 2.00) (cylinder -0.75) (axis 090) AGAIN do I include this (Add 2.00)? I hope my question makes sense. Thanks so much for this!! My glasses took three weeks and I need readers faster. I'm hoping to order them online. These bifocals are killing my neck when I'm working on my computer. Take care!
