Convert A Bunch Of Audio Files At Once Using Audacity

Convert A Bunch Of Audio Files At Once Using Audacity
How can we convert a ton of files from something like WAV to MP3 without going nuts?
There is a little used feature in Audacity that is perfect for bulk converting piles of files. I'll try to detail how it can be used here.
00:00 Intro
00:38 Introduce the "Macro Manager"
00:52 You make the Macros
01:02 Add a new one
01:08 Add actions on the right side
01:20 Insert "Export as MP3"
01:26 There is no way to specify where to save the file
01:46 Preferences menu
01:54 Directories
02:11 "Files..."
02:34 macro-output
Hope this helps!

For anyone who didn't set up their Directories in Audacity. My Macro output was sent to "C:\Users\YourNameHere\Documents\Audacity\macro-output".

Dam I just noticed the bit rate is super low by default. Can we change it to 320?

Brilliant 👍😀. Never thought to look in the macros section 🤭 I was thinking it would be File-->Batch Convert or similar.

Followed your steps, worked the FIRST time. However, later I wanted to change the directories, so clicked Edit/Preferences/Directories, and get a totally different window that onlyly shows "Temporary Files Directory" and no other choices!

An export folder will be automatically created in the folder where the import files are located. The setting shown in the video is no longer needed

@@edwardthesoundguy Is there a way to do this batch conversion without scrambling up all the metadata in the files? I have over 5,700 songs that I recently did the conversion on and most of them have the wrong metadata with the associated file. Most have the same metadata for numerous songs and some don't. It took hours (an overnight process) and they play in order of the filename, but the metadata is messed up. Any way to convert without screwing up the metadata? Thanks!

Let's say you have 400+ CDs saved as WAV files that you want to convert to mp3s to use on your phone. Each disc is a folder. Unless I missed something, this appears to require you to open each folder and select all files (songs) within it to convert. Then create a new folder at the export destination. And you'd have to do it 400+ times, renaming the export destination for each. If the path to your music is: F: Data > Music > YourName > a folder for every artist > folders for every disc by that artist, there HAS to be a way to drop in "YourName" or at the very least, the artists' folders to convert. If not by Audacity then some other program.

I think this tool is not quite sophisticated for this task, but there are likely things out there that can do this. If you look at photo conversion software, there are often options to preserve the sub folder structure, and also selections to import everything from all sub folders. I am hoping there is a tool that works like this but can't think of one at the moment. I'll let you know if I see anything that can do this. Thanks for bringing this up. It would be a cool feature worth having.

I am used to working with Adobe Audition and I know my way around with Batches. But I'm changing tempo from 125 to 128 and it sounds horrible, especially with beats. Audacity sounds much better! I had about 200 files i needed to stretch or shrink in my case. Was dreading having to do them seperately. Timesaver!

Crashes after saving first file every single try. (Later that day...) I've recently updated to vs 3.4.1. I downloaded a portable version of 3.0.3 and it works fine if very slowly.

Really interesting. Glad you got it going in the end. Sometimes, if you run the processes on their own, without automation, you can figure out which part is causing the problem and see if there is a way to set that step up to get by. There have also been some issues with a recent version of Audacity and this might be related. I haven't had a chance to look but will look into this as soon as I can get a minute. Thanks for bringing this up!
