Converse, Inverse, & Contrapositive - Conditional & Biconditional Statements, Logic, Geometry

This geometry video tutorial explains how to write the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of a conditional statement - if p, then q. This video also discusses the definition of a biconditional statement. It contains plenty of examples and practice problems. The converse is simply the reverse of a conditional statement - if q, then p. The inverse is simply the negation of the conditional statement. The contrapositive is the reverse negation of the original conditional statement.

The LA/CA examples very clearly have a true/false to them, but what about the truth statements for the pizza examples? Conditional statement: "If I am hungry, then I will eat pizza", I'd say false, as I could eat chips if I was hungry. Converse: "If I eat pizza, then I am hungry", wouldn't say true or false, sometimes I eat pizza just because it's there in front of me. Inverse: "If I am not hungry, then I will not eat pizza", again I wouldn't say true or false. Contrapositive: "If I won't eat pizza, then I am not hungry", should have a same as the conditional, so it should be false, which I'd say is right, maybe I don't eat pizza because I don't like it. So then the Converse/Inverse should be true, but they don't sound true.

I know this is late but for others wondering: It depends on what actually happens , will you eat pizza? will you not eat pizza? are you hungry? are you not hungry? P = I am hungry Q = I will eat pizza Consider CONDITIONAL: "If i am hungry, then I will eat pizza" Case 1: You are hungry, you will eat pizza (Conditional TRUE, you will eat the pizza if you are hungry like you said you would) Case 2: You are hungry, you will not eat pizza (Conditional FALSE, you lied: you said you will eat pizza if you are hungry) Case 3: You are not hungry, you will eat pizza (Conditional TRUE, you never said you must eat pizza only if you're hungry) Case 4: You are not hungry, you will not eat pizza (Conditional FALSE, you didn't say you will eat pizza even if you aren't hungry) ------------------------------------ So now consider the CONVERSE: "If i will eat pizza, then I am hungry" Case 1: You will eat pizza, you are hungry (Converse TRUE, you are hungry and so you decide to eat the pizza, matches with what you said you would do) Case 2: You will not eat pizza, you are hungry (Converse TRUE you are hungry sure, but you aren't hungry as a *consequent* of eating pizza like the converse states) Case 3: You will eat pizza, you are not hungry (Converse FALSE - you lied: you said you would be hungry if you eat pizza) Case 4: You will not eat pizza, you are not hungry (Converse TRUE - as you aren't hungry as a consequent of *not* eating pizza, you are hungry as a consequent OF eating pizza) ..And so on with inverse, contrapositive (do the truth tables yourself)
