Conversations with Suranne Jones & Sally Wainwright of GENTLEMAN JACK

Ойын-сауық

A Q&A with creator & showrunner Sally Wainwright and actress Suranne Jones.
Moderated by Mara Webster, SAG-AFTRA Foundation Program Manager
From Sally Wainwright, this series tells a remarkable and unlikely love story, set in the complex, changing world of 1832 Halifax, the cradle of the industrial revolution, just as it begins. Starring Suranne Jones, it focuses on landowner Anne Lister and her determination to change the fate of Shibden Hall, her faded ancestral home, by re-opening the coal mines and marrying well. The charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Lister - who dresses head-to-toe in black and charms her way into high society - has no intention of marrying a man. True to her nature, she plans to marry a seriously wealthy woman, heiress Ann Walker. Every part of the story is based in historical fact, recorded in the four million words of the real-life Anne Lister’s diaries, which contain the most intimate details of her life, once hidden in a secret code that is now broken. Creator/writer/director Sally Wainwright executive produces along with Faith Penhale and Piers Wenger. Produced by Lookout Point for BBC One, and co-produced with HBO.

As a lover of history of all things about the British Isles and also of costuming and architecture, I was fascinated by images I had found years ago of Shibden Hall, but never could find much information about it, so when I found Gentleman Jack, I almost cried. I also consumed all of the excellent BBC presentations of costume dramas since I was 17 and at my age now of 71, I am grateful to everyone involved in this series. I cannot get enough of it and because I probably will not get back to the UK to actually visit this amazing place, (I am in North Carolina), the show has filled a gap for me so beautifully. The series should be continued. Thanks so much! 🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏

Suranne Jones is an amaing actor. I find it hard to believe she is anyone else but Anne Lister, so watching her in this interview being her normal self is a revalaton of how hard she must have worked to become the character.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this show. There is so much there you really do have to watch it many times. I love the funny little details like how Lister bounds out of the coach and the door crashes into her groom. A small detail, very subtle but it is brilliant. Also, the way she treats Marion, her sister, patting her head after she arrives home from Denmark. Her relationship with her Aunt Anne is very touching. I could watch the ending on the cliff by the mine with Walker a million times. It is so real. Suranne really plays every emotion in it. Can't wait for season 2.

im a big fan and i just learned that Suranne was involved as assoc producer of the series and now that i think back on the episodes this gave a wonderful depth and fullness to the character something inexplicable and comprehensive about her character knowing the world she was playing and living in and it all somehow came out deeply on camera as a true engagement with the moments of the film, it just felt better and realer and different than other shows, somehow having the main character involved with the overarching world of the series all the characters felt like they inhabited a world that was holistic .... its hard to put into words, love the series ... keep up the good work,

Suranne Jones is wonderful actress, loved ✨💖 her as the Tardis, The Doctors Wife, with Matt Smith, totally rocking the roll! Excellent choice for the roll of Anne Lister ~ can’t wait to read the books. I’m not lesbian. At the conclusion of Gentleman Jack Series 2, I had the feelng I had only really started to understand Miss Lister. The acting and production has been brilliant from the beginning, it is rare that a tv series is so finely crafted - the only disappointment is that it is over! A series 3 would be so much appreciated as there is much more tell about this fascinating woman and her world.

14:45 Romaine Brooks was born later than Anne Lister, in the 1870's. There's an iconic self portrait of her, done in 1923, sporting a moderately low top hat. Honorable mention goes to the famous movie scene(s) of Marlene Dietrich in top hat and tails, albeit in the 20th century too.

Anne Lister was a pioneering mountaineer. She was the first Brit of either sex to climb the highest peak of the Pyrennes. I believe after marrying Ann they travelled extensively. Now there is a story worth exploring more. I think there is more to Anne Lister to be discovered beyond any series.

I discovered that Anne Lister diaries are online as images, a pic of each page is available so I was really excited to actually read some of them and to decode at least one page sadly her writting is so complicated to understand that I couldnt even began. Also Ive always hear that people with bad hand writting are really smart and they have bad writting because their brains thinks much faster that their hands can write if thats the case Anne Lister must have been brillant!!!

THIS is not about Maxine Peake. This is about Suranne Jones and the current staff and writers. IMO this one is a lot deeper and more nuanced than the film. They didn't shy away from her many different sides, her arrogance etc. It's a lot less just "nice". Sally Wainwright put half of her life into this. It's her big dream. Naturally this is a lot more nuanced and deep and intense because of that.
