The drummer in what's unarguably one of the greatest Jazz bands of all times: Miles Davis' Super Sextet. 'Kind of Blue' = Arguably the most influential Jazz record of all times.

When I hear a great drummer speak on a set of drums I have to comment. Jimmy Cobb really tells a story. He is saying things to me by using his drum set. He is TASTY GROOVY CREATIVE and like the best of them you want more. super phrasing and above all a TOTAL MUSICIAN. You can hear the melodic interpretations when he plays This is the kind of drumming we Adore. Thank you Jimmy Cobb

Mel Rhyne is the organist in the Wes Montgomery session. And I think that Miles disliked Hank's playing because to my ear he was Miles equal melodically speaking. Coltrane's conception was different to Miles That's why it worked so well, a case of opposite attracts. Just my opinion and I know that many disagree with me already. I need to be in the mood to listen to Coltrane but I can listen to Hank every day what ever mood I'm in. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Jimmy Cobb replaced Philly Joe Jones, but their styles were unrelated in the sense that Philly Joe was much more energetic and imposing, while Jimmy was more subtle and softer, but their time was excellent and that's where they were related. As for the organist with Wes Montgomery, that had to be Mel Rhyne. Good stuff to hear from those "who were there," during those idyllic days. The mics for these interviews should be minis, not hand-held, especially for those who are ignorant of microphone presence.

It's a minor matter, but they should have been given lapel mikes. At least, the lollipop mikes could have been on stands. Jimmy came into Miles's sextet by May, 1958. They recorded May 26. That was before most of the Porgy and Bess sessions. Philly Joe only played on one of those sessions, the one with the famous "Gone, Gone, Gone" feature, which is typical Philly Joe and one of his best showcases. Joe was fired (along with Red) because they frequently didn't show up and were smack users. Red was very late for the second session for the "Milestones" album and Miles played piano on that dreary version of "Walkin' " that they called "Sid's Ahead". I would have abandoned that session, if I had been Miles.

@@jeanhodgson8623 It looked to me like they both had lapel mics as well as hand-held mics, which seemed kind of strange.

Mr Cobb was having some “Senior moments” as he didn’t remember Mel Rhine’s name and also Juilliard. Fascinating interview though.

Interesting to hear that Hank's solos got left off the Blackhawk recordings... didn't know that. I got into Hank because of his solos on the Blackhawk records--_very_ glad not all the solos were cut!

I assume that you know that a 4 CD set of the Blackhawk date has been issued, with the complete versions of all the selections. Re Hank being with the group, Hank said that there were no problems and Miles treated him well. My favorite Hank and Wynton solos in that group are on "So What" at Carnegie Hall. That is THE track from that session. Wonderful performance.

This ends the idea that blue in green was written by bill evans. He says that Miles was the one orchestrating the album.
