What a profoundly enlightening interview. The huge difference between "Freedom from" and "Freedom to". " Freedom to" means we have to work hard to achieve and sacrifice some things. "Freedom is accepting responsibility". "Science takes things apart to find out how, religion puts things together to find the meaning." "Science looks back, religion looks forward".

I wish I discovered this channel sooner. Every interview I’ve watched so far have been so insightful, eye opening and hopeful. The bright minds John Anderson interviews are amazing; as well he is such a damn good interviewer, so genuine and purposeful. Another wonderful lecture by rabbi Jonathan Sacks. He discussed the word. -freedom.One.has freedom to go for a walk or play. the piano. One must follow the words of the great. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks who spoke of. the We rather than the I in this Modern Age. In Shule we pray as a Community Freedom is accepting responsibility As Hillel said. If I am for myself who am I. Think of the Other. And improve the World

Love the dialogue without anger...we must get civility back into our conversations. The college and university system cannot allow the students to dictate the curriculum and take the pains of having students leave if they do not approve of what is being offered and get back to honest education instead of indoctrination. Well done Rabbi Sacks and John Anderson!

Why?

This is 100% worth watching. I love John Anderson's quiet demeanor with which he interviews and he is matched with wonderful insight by this revered and knowledgeable Rabbi.

John: This man is one of my all-time religious heroes. His sermon on 'Forgiveness' (available on KZread) prompted me to send it to many friends (including Christian clergy). It is funny, depressing, and up-lifting, all at once. I recommend 'WE LIVE IN UNFORGIVING TIMES' to all who are serious about humanity; and see, within EACH of us, the 'imago Dei'. What Rabbi Sacks hints at here, though, (in his distinction between a 'guilt' culture, and a 'shame' culture), is that - in recent decades - we have imported into our midst, millions of people from an alien 'shame' culture, and have expected that to have no implications on our indigenous culture. Which 'belief system' speaks of 'honour-killings'? Which 'belief system' does not see everyone as the 'imago Dei'?

Really impressive interview

Rabbi sacks speaks the truth. Based on knowledge and experience. He speaks of the i syndrome but the world isn’t about I. One is not a hermit. One interacts with others. So I agree with rabbi sacks one must consider we. A wonderful lecture by a rabbi the rabbi discussed victim culture but did all Holocaust victims dwell on the pain of the holocaust or did they choose a new path. To create a. Family and start again yes many many suffered and lost many as I did my grandmother golda stavororsky-their memories will never be forgotten-one must consider others and work together. Thank you rabbi for this lecture-perhaps it will change youth but it will inspire others

Jews gave us the Atlantic slave trade, Communism, gay marriage, the trans movement, the porn industry, much of Big Pharma including the opioid crisis as well as the Israeli manufacturers of trans hormones, _and that's just the stuff least likely to be called conspiracy theory._ ⅓ of our congressmen hold dual citizenship with Israel and our foreign policy only serves Israeli geopolitical interests while our Southern neighbor is now just about officially run by the cartels.

Well worth listening to just for that gem towards the end about our transformation from a guilt culture to a shame culture. I wonder whether that's tied to the current obsession with identity politics, which is fundamentally tribal in nature. I've always associated honour-shame cultures with tribalism - they seem to go hand in hand.

Nice discussion gentlemen. I feel that social media is being blamed for a malevolence that has actually stemmed from the colonisation of the education system by post-modernist relativists and grievance feminists for about half a century or more. I've seen young children being indoctrinated in school. It seems to me to be far more destructive when children are taught divisive politics and to resent confabulations by the very people who are supposed to educate them. I think the malevolence of social media is a secondary consequence of this institutionalised malevolence.

Hi guys, I’d like to correct one thing you said. You mentioned that things started going wrong in the west in the 1960s. However, life wasn’t great before the 60s either. The bad times and moral disagreements actually started a bit earlier than that ..... back with Adam and Eve, they set the ball rolling 👍 😉

Rabbi Sacks isn't "Lord Jonathan Sacks", which implies he is a younger son of a marquess or a duke, which he isn't - he's a life peer in his own right. He is simply "Lord Sacks" or possibly "Jonathan, Lord Sacks".

Actually he was Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks! He was knighted by the Queen and then became a member of the House of Lords hence the change to Lord! Rabbi always come first because for him that was the title he wanted first

I turned off when at about 6:50 when you started talking about Trump's America being deeply divided. This is such a trope. There has been division in political terms in the US (and the UK and many other countries) since the modern world began. In the US the major parties have polled about 50/50 in most elections. It is rare for a national poll to be far off from that. What you are doing is to equate the period from the end of WWII to the 1960s and Vietnam conflict as "normal". It was anything but. A little more reading of history would be useful.

I too get annoyed at the "America now so divided" trope. One reason being as you said it's always been divided. The other reason being that it is actually good thing that there are differences of opinion and schools of thought.

@CommandoVault So, how am I intolerant. I disagree with the premise and have historical evidence on my side. There have ALWAYS been two main sides/factions in American politics. We call them progressive and conservative today, but they have gone by many names. I listen to a lot of John Anderson's conversations. I generally really like them. I have also listened to talks by Rabi Sacks. I am also generally a fan of his. What I don't particularly care for is the current trope about divides in the US. As I said, they have always been there. I am old enough to remember the 1980s when voter participation was at a low. The reason given was that the tow main political parties were so much alike (each had their left and right wings) that it made no difference who was in power. Well, now we have major differences, that people said they wanted, and it is now called divisive. The Rabi just needs to look to his own country (which I lived in for a while) to see this in action.

A talk about the throwing away of western civilisation. Western cultures are guilt based; Asian cultures are shame based. What about sub-Saharan cultures ?

There is talk of forgiveness but no talk of restitution to the person(s) harmed. In Jewish Law, that principle exists - Tikun. The West is reaping what it has sown in violence and moral hypocrisy against Africans and the native peoples that they abused during their Western expansion in the name of their Christian god. Do the restitution, and the harmony will be restored. "Until the philosophy that holds one race superior an another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned, there will be war." (Bob Marley son of Cedella Marley and Norval Marley, a Syrian Jewish Jamaican who served in the British military).

Halfway through the religiosity turned me away. Good insight in the beginning

I met Jon Sacks in our synagogue. Even in person, he has this insufferable air of acting. He tries too hard to be a Jewish imitation of an English gentleman. I didn't like him. He struck me as not genuine.

He's a mediocre thinker who does a decent impression of a great thinker - I'm not convinced either. His ideas are a dull repackaging of all the tedious conformity that people gradually began rejecting from the 18th century onward.

Interesting...Look up the British Jewish historian Geoffrey Alderman. He has always been very critical of Sacks, particularly on his flip flopping and political point scoring. Ultimately Sacks became a British establishment figure, far more adapt at mingling with Lords and Ladies, Royalty and Archbishops than he did with frum yids in Golders Green or seaside retirees in Southend or Bournemouth. I remember talking to an old gent from a certain provincial United Synagogue affiliate about the Chief Rabbi. When I mentioned Sacks he looked at me in contempt. He said that Rabbi Jakobovits was the only Chief Rabbi in his books.

He's a duplicitous agent of derailing. It's clear in this video, the incapacity to admit the core factors of the Domino effect, easy scapegoat crap argument is for the sheep.

All 3000+ religions are extremely likely to be false. Give your money to someone directly in need. Spend your time learning about science, the world, and the universe.
