I taught both my babies sign, despite not having hearing challenges. It helped them with communicating their needs prior to the establishment of verbal skills.

My parents communicated with us like this and still do as adults. It's nothing like a stern "stop, no, wait or pay attention" in ASL that no one else understands. It is also nothing like an encouraging "yes, go, I love you" in ASL that no one else understands!

Oh my heart! Love seeing babies sign! They learn so fast! Faster than speaking too, so amazing to watch! I taught the girl I used to nanny to sign from 4 months on and she could communicate with me so well by the time she was 1 and even better at 2! Funny though because her mom kept up with it as best as possible but the dad didn't learn enough so he and sometimes the mom were asking what certain signs she kept signing to them meant!🤣❤🤟🥰 If I ever have kids I will definetly teach them ASL from an early age so they are bilingual! Wish I was taught as a baby/kid but thankful I was able to study and learn it and am now fluent and certified as an interpreter!🥰🤟

I honestly recommend the "Baby Signs" book to even adults who aren't trying to teach a little one signing necessarily. It's such an awesome beginning point because it explains so much about it, the benefits, and then obviously the simple words to start with. After that, there are so many more amazing resources including books, flash cards, video tutorials, websites, etc. It's such a beautiful language and good luck!

Hi! I'm a university student and currently learning about how babies learn speaking so I feel I'm kinda qualified to answer. When babies are born, they already know the sound of their mother's language and know some language structures (a study showed that they can differentiate between words with a meaning (mostly nouns like chair, toy, food etc) and words without a meaning (like a, that, you etc)). They continue to learn differentiate sounds and learn to understand words. They start to communicate by screaming, babbling and copying way before they can talk. By 18 months, they understand about 200 words but can only say around 10-20. Babies are born with small mouths, big tongues and their larynx is high in their pharynx to prevent suffocation. That means the only sound the can produce at first is screaming. Their physical development to control their body movements developes quicker than the ability to speak (mentally and physically). Because of that, it's a lot easier for babies to talk in sign language. They may start to talk sooner and have a bigger vocabulary. TL;DR: Scientifically, she should be able to talk more in sign than in English because it's easier for her.
