Conversation between a Balti person from Pakistan and Tibetan Dolpo Students from Nepal

An interesting conversation at "Dolpo House" with Tibetan students of Dolpo, Dolpo is one of the village of Tibetans living Himalayan range in Nepal. Most of the Dolpo people follow Buddhism while there is minority who follows Bon religion.
Dolpo house is a student Hostel for the students of Dolpo studing in Kathmandu Nepal.
Up to now, I have shared only the common vocabularies. But this is a real conversation. During this conversation, I also realized that I am not good in speaking my native language.
This is the fift video series of Bridging the Broken Tibetan Communities
Exposure of Balti-Tibet Shared Language
The clips shared on Facebook were viewed, liked and shared at large scale by people of Tibet and Baltistan (Balti Yul) and other interested friends around the world.
. .. .
Similarities between Tibet and Balti languages۔
During CONTACT Peacebuilding Program on South Asia held in Nepal during Jan-Feb 2017, I met with many Tibetan friends from Tibet and Nepal. We found many similarities in language, culture and life styles in Baltistan (Baltiyul) and Tibet.
Baltistan (Baltiyul) was also a part of greater Tibet in the history.
Just watch the attached video clip between me from Baltistan (the Northeast region of Pakistan) and Tibetan friends form Tibet and Nepal.

Very much enjoyed hearing you speak Balti and hearing of your great effort preserve the language and culture of Baltistan. Apparently, Balti is much closer to Classical Tibetan than the current standard spoken Tibetan. So you are doing all Tibetan and Tibetic language speakers a great service with your effort.

Unfortunately Baltistan is the only place outside Tibet that name geographic features in Tibetan. In India due to nationalism there are lost of newly coined Sanskrit names that didn't even exist in ancient India, while in Baltistan the river is called Shyok, etc. Everything is transcribed directly from Balti/Tibetan. And they don't stop there. They now already tried to change Mapham Yumtso to "Manasarovar" and Gangs Tise/Rinpoche to "Kailash" in English even if it has never been a part of India. China and Pakistan must keep Tibetan language and ask all international governments to respect and using Tibetan geographic names, such as Qomolangma, Chhgo Ri, etc.

@@GyacoYu you have no right to talk for tibetans. especially about conserving tibetan language and culture since there's ongoing cultural genocide in tibet by ccp china where children cant even learn their own language tibetan in schools and are forced to go to chinese schools. and its chomolangma not qomolangma you try to make even tibetan names sound chinese. none of the tibetan names of places in tibet are spelled or said the right way, its all changed and written/ said in a chinese way and alot have been replaced with chinese names as well, not their original tibetan names. so you dont have the right to talk about preserving tibetan.

Stanzin Kargut Balti and Purgi and Ladakhi and Zanskari and the other small languages spoken by nomads in Nubra area, these all languages are believed to be branches of Tibetan. A strong evidence is that before the coming of Islam to central Asia, we all practiced Ancient Tibetan Bon religion, then came Tibetan Buddhism and now, many are Muslims. Balti is believed to have a separate writing script of its own which is now extinct. Purgi is probably the most mysterious one as it is 90% extinct and we have no idea what script it had. Nope , Ladakhi is quite close to Balti . Almost 90 percent of the Vocabulary is same but the way these words are pronounce in these languages makes the difference . Actually chan-thang, Zangskari, Ladakhi, Balti and Purgi were same language about 600-700 years ago . Ladakhi Balti split was the the first one. Balti and Purgi split happened later on . These languages are the most Archaic form of Tibtic languages. Balti and Ladakh has preserved some of the characteristics of old Tibetan that is lost in Modern Tibetan. Like the word for language “སྐད” ( Skat) though Tibetan write this as Skat But Lhasa dialect pronounce it as “Ke” , whereS Baltis and Ladakhi pronounce it as “Skat “. Just like this most of the Tibetan dialects don’t pronounce prefixes and Suffixes. Balti and ladakhi are Non-Tonal just like the old Tibetan language, modern Tibetan language is tonal like Chinese . Even the sound of some consonants have changed in modern Tibetan , but Balti still retain these words. Like from “Bön” religion they write “Bön” but pronounce it as “Pon” or “phon” depending on the dialect . The change of sound of letter /b/ to /p/ can also be seen in Ladakhi . In Balti the word for Girl is “Bongo” in Ladakhi it’s “pongo”

There are many dialects of it. There are many language academies for the Tibetan main dialects but for the Balti dialect there are very few language academy in Karachi, Skardu of Pakistan and may be few in Indian Kargil and Ladakh.

Muhammad Hussain I imagine it would be almost impossible to learn online? If that is indeed the case, does it mean I must go to Pakistan in order to learn the language? It’s such a beautiful and it’s such a shame that it’s not really spoken outside of Baltistan.

Balti people are mixed of indo Aryan and Tibetan that’s why there faces are not like Tibetan. Before when Tibetan mix with indo aryan they mostly spoke Tibetan later some words were changed. Balti language is part of Tibetan not a people they are different than Tibetan there lifestyle, religion etc. many centuries ago Tibet conquered with baltistan that’s why Tibetan language started to speak there.

  • @Pt00201

they were originally of tibetan descent that is why they speak tibetic language despite their look and being mixed. most are mixed with dardic people but not everyone looks the same, there are some who still look very tibetan/ ladakhi. they were originally bonpo and tibetan buddhist, their lifestyle and religion is only different because after tibet lost control of the region others took over and other influences grew in the region, and they converted to islam. where are you from btw? you dont look tibetan either. ahh you're nepali magar spelled monger i see. there are tibetan muslims as well so just because their lifestyle and religion or look is different wont take away from the fact that they have tibetan ancestry. you have no right to tell them what part of themselves they should identify with just because of looks, especially when their language; which is one of the most important things when it comes to culture and personal identity, is so closely related to ours.
