I learned from another KZreadr that if you cast a conventional reel and then keep the reel facing down; gravity will help get some extra distance. After that video, I have been doing that for crab snaring in the San Francisco area.

One of the best vids on casting with multi reels! Very good casting technique: more than 100yds with a 8ft rod is outstanding!I would like to know about the reliability of the reels. Funny: in europe we mostly use 10-12ft for river fishing with groundlead and 12-15ft for beachcasting. Greets from germany P.s.: on the Abu Garcia reels you can take out the centrifugal weights, by that the spool rotates faster and you can cast further.

This video!!! For me, the number one! Finally a reel comparison video, every minute of which is enjoyable. He doesn't just throw one, he also has a good introduction! This man has such a way of presenting and speaks with such "fervor" that he holds my attention the whole time! I would really like to see a video from him showing other types of reels, such as PENN, SHIMANO, DAM, QUANTUM, PISCIFUN. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I have used Penn 209`s and 309`s for the last 40+ years. I even use the Penn 209`s for catfish and alligator gar.

Good video reel/rod fishing distance testing using a simple overhead fishing thump cast and minimal payload drop off the rod tip. Getting over 100 yards with such casts and level wind reels is darned good. However, once past the rod, reel, and line, casting for extreme distance is all about casting technique, which means swinging the payload in a Large arc using at least some manner of pendulum cast. This means the payload drop needs to be at least 2/3rds to 3/4 down from the tip guide, arms and hands held way out from yer body, swung out in a Hatteras cast and at the apex of the payload begin the swing, punch and pull the rod handle. My Omoto 6000C(S) level wind reel stuck on a 10.5ft Omega rod can do just over 430ft using 17lb .35mm mono (50lb braid is .37mm) and a 150 gram lead (5.3ozs).

This is the most practical way of seeing reels in action. I'm new to fishing and the wealth and depth of information is bewildering (and confusing). I was very surprised and impressed with your daughters outfit and recently saw a Abu ambassadeur 6500 C3 and 6600 C4 in my tackle store. Are these the same reels? They are not the same exact reel. Most of the dimensions on the reels are the same, but the C4 has four ball bearings compared to three ball bearings of the C3. You will pay a little more money for the C4, but the C3 is a very good quality reel. You can’t go wrong with either one of these reels

Bub, love peen reels, just purchased a penn 113N and the N for narrow is awesome! This reel will let you bait get way out there. I was using the 209 and the 113 will pass it by. Winging the line back in is way easier due to the narrow spool. The cranking power is awesome too.

When it comes to revolving spool reels for casting from shore, it really depends on the fish I'm targeting. Personally I like an ABU 7000C3 LW on my custom 13' MH Lamiglas or an ABU 7000C LW on a 12' MH Ugly Stik when throwing cut bait or whole shad into tailraces for catfish. When surf casting for shark, Trevally, striper or blues I prefer a 13' Penn Carnage III H Ulua rod with a Penn 4/0 113HWS Senator conventional or my custom 13' MH Lamiglas with a Penn Fathom II 40 SD conventional. And drop down to a 12' - 10' MH Ugly Stik with either an 7000C/C3 LW or ABU 6500C/C3 for throwing lures. Line types and weights depend on the species I'm targeting. That custom rod that you had made for your daughter is a beautiful rod, pink is not my color, but still that's a very nice rod. Great video! I'm a saltwater surf/pier fisherman in NYC metro. As most results were within a 10% bracket, I'd call them comparable. Especially once you add hooks and baits. I regard the difference between levelwind and non-levelwind as insignificant for casting distance. The case for levelwind of course is not having to hand-lay the line back on the spool, especially when you've got a fish on. It works great if you're targeting small to moderate sized fish. The case against levelwind has zero to do with casting and everything to do with the mechanism's ability to handle large, heavy fish. Most of the ocean species targeted in the South and Gulf - like drum and sharks can easily destroy a levelwind mechanism. So can large, heavy striped bass and bluefish. I'm glad the UglyStik good some good play. Many fishermen laugh at UglyStiks - they're great rods. I have a little 6-foot one with an ancient Penn Levelmatic 940 spooled with 20 lb. Trilene Big Game, and I've caught more fish with that than anything else. I've heard that both Penn and Abu Garcia reels declined in quality since joining the PureFishing conglomerate. For surfcasting here in the NE, I'm considering the Abu 7000 Ambassadeur, or a Daiwa Saltist of equivalent size, the Sealine for non-levelwind or an Avet 6/4 MC Raptor. The Avets though require almost annual maintenance (changing out bearings).

In cases where you are fishing the ocean or big water that has not a lot of variance between depths in short distances, I agree. A few yards between the reels means nothing. But when you’re fishing the big rivers and the ledge that you are trying to get over is an extra 10 to 12 foot past where you are throwing with the level wind, distance means the world! For in that 10 foot distance range of water the depth could change from 15 foot to 70 foot in a blink of an eye. If you cannot reach that extra10 foot that you need for distance to get over the ledge, you might as well just go fish the ocean lol. Because a lot of times those big cats are hanging just on the other side of that deep ledge. Been there, done that. It sucks watching a guy right next to you catch huge blue cat, and you can’t reach the area that he is catching them in.

@@rivercatblues - That makes sense - especially some beaches with mainly shallow water. Us ocean fisherman also seek dropoffs, hidden inlets between sandbars, and holes. "Reading the water," is a whole art unto itself. The "8-n-Bait" boys at Cape Hatteras are in the same circumstance as you describe in having to launch heavy bait and weight long distances to reach the second or third gut (the drop between sandbars). Ditto for the group that fishes PINS in TX. Here in the northeast, sometimes we'll get stripers and blues right in the wash - literally a 10-yard cast. In our case if we were to fling it out 100+ yards, we could very well be casting over the fish. Other beaches you could cast 200 yards (some guys can) and still not reach fish - because they're over 500 yards out. Those cases it's a boat or stay home. I have no experience with catfishing, but what I do find interesting is that catfish and striped bass are grouped together when it comes to gear selection.

Never liked any level wind reels except for my baitcasters… most all of my reels are conventional multipliers whether being star drag or lever drag and they all cast a country mile.. you can never ever cast 200 yards (I’m in heavy surf mostly is why I like getting the distance) having a level wind on your reels…. braid weighs next to nothing and it comes off the spool very freely.. if you’re burning your thumb, you need to lean about mags… there’s no reason you should have to slow your cast by way of burning your thumb…. You can mag just about any conventional reel unless it has dual drag plates on each side of the reel… theres a lot to be said about installing mags…

i have a vintage abu garcia 5500 that i had 30lb braid on with a 2oz sinker its a bronze bushing reel proly over 200 yards worth of braid i cast to the backing on it lol

With lvl wind reels you have to match the guide with where the line sits on the spool .if the line is pulled off on an angle it will cut the distance by a huge amount. A reel with no guide pulls the line off from any angle. Thats why I tape the line on the spool and line it all up

Really interesting comparison, thanks for posting! I fish for muskie and sturgeon, mostly from a boat, and use Abu 7000 series reels. Distance casting is not necessary, as I troll or drift most often. I’m a longtime shore catfish fisherman, and I have recently gotten into surf fishing, but I have been using my spinning reel for these applications. I’d like to use my level winds if I can figure out how to cast them a respectable distance. Other than oiling them up, did you do any modifications to your reels (removing brakes, etc) to get them to cast that far? Any help would be appreciated.

No sir, I did not do anything to the reels except clean them very well and oiled them up. They were all completely stock. You can adjust the brake on them if you want to try to get the perfect setting for your line poundage and sinker weight that you choose for your fishing application. Just play around with your reel during your practice throws to find that “sweet spot” and you should be good to go!

@@rivercatblues Thanks for the reply! As I said, I use my 7000s for trolling and drifting. and have not adjusted any dials on the reel. I assumed those adjustment dials were just dust covers. Twining those will adjust the brake tension?

Yes. The star knob on the handle is for the drag system and the small knob on the sides will adjust the spool tension. Your new 7000 should have an instruction manual with it that will show these parts on your new reel

@@rivercatblues Thanks! I use the star drag often but haven’t adjusted the spool tension yet, because I haven’t needed to. I bought all 6 of my Abu 7000 reels when Gander Mountain was having their going out of business sale, so mind did not come with boxes or instructions.

Uhh, what's with the abrupt stop at the end of each cast? When I cast super far the speed of the line coming off the spool always gradually slows down before it hits the water. Are u PURPOSELY stopping it abruptly? If so why?

Hello sr, I have strange idea in mind I want your opinion about it. I do surf fishing with a 14rod. My rod is really thin and I want to pair it with an squall low profile reel the 400 version(baitcasting with level wind) Penn states that it handle 6 oz of weight. My question if it could reach +100yds like my fathom ll does (with the same 14 rod )...that could be possible? Thanks

If you set that combo up right and have the correct line poundage and spool tension on that reel, I would say yes. That distance could be a strong possibility

Those reels don't have a Magnetic brake right? I have a 90s Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C and I'm trying to learn how to cast it. I've always used spinning reels.

That is a very good reel that you have. I use the tension knob on the right side of that reel to tighten or loosen the spool. Maybe use 20 lb line with a 1.5 or 2 oz sinker. Just start out slow and as soon as that sinker hits the water, stop the spool dead in its tracks with your thumb. Just don’t burn your thumb. With practice and patience you will be ripping it a hundred yards out across the water. Just make sure the spool is not super loose with the heavier sinkers. You will get it with practice

Jag har alltid använt snurrande rullar, men jag köpte en gammal Abu Garcia 5000C rulle som aldrig användes. Jag ska testa den med ett 4,20 m surfspö för att se om det slår Shimano Stradic 5000 XG på avstånd.

Green rod is Tangling With Catfish rod (TWC) and the green handle rod is a Meat Hunter rod. Both are made in the USA

I’m really new to fishing and I am so confused on all of the names for these types of reels. I’ve heard them be called trolling reels, conventional reels, level wind reels, round bait caster reels, and just baitcaster reels. I also thought that the baitcaster reel was its own thing.

Yes your tension knob plays a huge role in the distance of your cast. You just have to play around with it during your release to figure out what works best for you without getting a backlash.

stick to mono the breaking point of braid is shotty at best

Which reel would you recommend between $100-200,this my first time actually spending money on a reel,always bought Walmart but wanna be able to do Saltwater fishing and so on,I've been seeing the Daiwa bg is good,but I like the look and style of the conventional more and Lind capacity

Closer to the $200 range would be the Daiwa Saltist Level Wind. An absolute fantastic reel! That would be my choice for a reel that you want to keep a long time. And you can still get great distances with it

@@rivercatblues So you rely on your thumb break only...I used to use Shimano baitcaster 20 years ago I didn't even have to use thumb to brake and no birds nest happened. I remember I loosened the spool tension and increased the magnetic brake.

@@shomurakamisan The Abu7000 come with centrifugal brakes. Take the cover off opposite the crank. Inside are 4 axles with little fibre rollers which slide up those axles. Abu come with 3 sets of four. Small, medium and large. The smaller rollers will brake less and give greater distance. Still need a bit of thumb at the end.

Non level wind or conventional reels always use braid line / never monofilament. The reason is because braid naturally lays flat and and levels itself better than any monofilament line ever possibly could. And yes conventional reels cast way farther than level wind reels. Due to the drag from the level wind mechanism itself which has a definate potential for failure or "not keeping up" under high stress from Big Game such as Marlin, Maco, & Tuna, when they run due to sand in the worm gear, or a lack of maintenance oil, etc.....More parts equal more problems. Even if you do not drop your reel in the sand it only takes a tiny grain of sand blowing in the wind to to mess up the "exposed level wind worm gear". Also the level wind has a potential to not keep up due to the reasons I have stated, and will suddenly sieze when Big Game run or take off and pull against the drag mechanism which then snaps or breaks the line. And Big Game require 60-130lb test braid line and 25-35 lbs of drag. That's why level wind reels are not used by offshore Big Game anglers or charters. Or by those who surf fish the shoreline and walk long distances with only one reel. The potential for failure I have mentioned is just too high.
