I think that no matter what part of the aero modeling sport you fly, one can appreciate the level of skill required in this flight.

I flew CL and a teenager and if you never have you really can’t appreciate the skill this gentleman just demonstrated. The square maneuvers were amazing. Absolutely an outstanding performance!

I saw CL planes in the hobby stores as a kid and I knew, even then, that the estimated flight time of any of those planes would be less than 30 seconds. And under 5 seconds if I was the one flying.

This is a way different than when we flew Control Line Stunt in the early 70's. We flew a lot slower with O.S. .35's and Noblers. The Fox .35 powered planes were even slower. Looks like he's using longer lines than the 60 foot ones we used. Ah the memories and the smell of the K&B or Fox Superfuel.

Still have the O.S.35. Built a kit called the Phantom Mite and flew combat models with a paper streamer for the opponent (s) to cut. Laystraight Wires and yellow aluminium handle. Wonderful memories.

Bill Ducas: I also thought his lines looked a lot longer than the ones we used in the 1970’s. I remember the ‘ole Nobler. A truly great plane indeed. I used a K&B 35 in those days. Many great memories!!

I miss the tug felt in the hand from the larger planes.

I am 68 years old now but, whin I was in the army in 1969 I flew what was called "U" control. I had no idea people were still doing this kind of flying. Believe it or not, I was as good as this guy. My best plane was a F4U1 Corsair.

@Trash Shaming Yes, people do still fly control line. I've been out of touch these last few years, don't know who's won the World Champs in F2B (CL Stunt) for the last decade. The Chinese were dominant throughout the 90s IIRC. These days they've moved to electrics for Stunt. I'm more of a Combat flier (using streamers).

cwrobinson6363 .... Control line has a sort of cult following. There are a few online suppliers keeping this aspect of the hobby alive and well. I flew CL alongside my dad when I was a kid. I’m 37 now and fly my own planes, but still with my dad. Good times.

I used to do this type of flying when I was 5 years old in 1979....I thought it had gone the way of wagons and horse drawn buggies...hahaha didn't know there were still badass line control pilots. Great precision my friend.

lol was thinking the same thing, this must pull quite hard, looking at his posture. combined with a lot of training hours... well, or maybe he's as proficient with the other arm and balances it out that way. or the human body is quite resilient to such stresses. anyway, keep up the interesting videos mr jeff

Oh yes, in Control Line the figure 9 is eyery time the first manouveur you will learn. And it happens again and again and again ...

I remember flying a plane like that in 70s and all I can remember is begging God to let gas run out before I fainted.

I used to have one of those growing up and it was by far one of the best hobby/toys ever. Seeing these videos makes me want another one.

The wings have 10 foot streamers attached. the idea is to grt close enough to your upponents aircraft to cut his streamer. Not as easy as it sounds, but great fun. there is a video of it somewhere. Found it! Watch this from 19:30 onwards.

Very impressive, takes hours if not years of practice to get to this level. I love the physicality of C/L, radio has more in common with computer gaming than physical flying. C/L certainly seems to be making a comeback.

Insanely good flying, and the camerawork was superb. Great video.

Ok I'm impressed! I fly rc jets and planes, all types and have never understood the attraction of control line rc. This guys really fun to watch. His focus and timing is world class. I imagine with this hobby you must loose a few, being that your so close to the ground, the whole time. Pitch sensitive planes would be hellish to fly so close and level. Especially with somthing fast amd high performance, like this guys bird!!😲😎👍💯

Thank you. Yes this model is very sensitive. In this time I practised 1.000 flights a year. And every time it is a high risk flight. The attraction of Control Line is that every flight is like you are sitting in a rollercoaster and to feel the tension of the model airplane is very sportive. Radio Control is very attractive, too. I like to watch this beautiful flights and models. For me, modelflying is a great sport. Every category has her own style and type of great attraction.

Same thing happened to me, dude! Don't feel bad. When about 11, I got a white plastic Wen-Mac Aircobra from the Sears catalog. It was tail heavy, & would stall too easily, with my novice flying skills! I was crushed when it quickly crashed and broken. A compassionate older CL hobbyist flier then bought & let me fly a Jim Walker designed American Junior Firebaby. What a wonderful, fun, easy to fly, trainer plane that was! In no time, I was doing loops, & having a blast! That more experienced flier made all the difference. I'm forever indebted to him & his kindness!

Yes when you go Inverted down is up and up is down. You have time for errors when you're flying rc with altitude but at these speeds and close to the ground you got to think fast.

Back in the 50's... I would spend weeks building a beautiful model... take it out to fly and crash it to pieces. Never did learn to fly control line very well at all. Finally gave up and took up fishing.

Richard Herrington I got a present from my father when he returned from the USA to England and was a plane with plastic body with a Cox 0.49cc engine. First time I flew it I broke a wing off and ruined the thing.

The engine is a Plettenberg Heli Expert 20-18 with a Havran Prop (3-blade-prop-Wood). My favourite engine was a 2 stroke - ST-60 from Tom Lay. So I tried to find an electric engine with the same rhythm. Mr. Plettenberg helped me a lot to find a perfect electric engine for me. So it was the 25-18 and the 20-18 heli expert.

Some pretty amazing skills there, I reckon I’d throw up just from doing so many circles continually. As someone else commented, you hold your breath half the time thinking he is going to drive it straight into the deck.

@Jim Alley I can remember as a kid here, on a weekend you would hear them at the local high school oval. We would jump on our bikes and rush down there and watch. Sometimes, you would be invited to look at them close up, and the questions about how they worked flowed. Haha, as well as being able to fly control line, those guys were also very patient with the neighbourhood kids and would answer all our questions.

Richard, you are one hell of a good C/L pilot!!

OMG! It looks as though the pattern hasn't changed since I memorised it from the rule book of 1978! Lol. :) He's a bit rough... But I was flying in the days of Doug Harlow, Doug Grinam and Tony Cincotta. HP40 being the engine of choice that I still have today. :) It was great learning about improving aircraft design. I turned mainstream ideas upside down with wing and flap design, and came up with an aerobatic model that could change direction around a very sharp radius like a combat model with no buffeting, with next to no speed loss, yet it was the size of a small stunt ship (36" span) and at the same flying speed, slow! You could fit 2 vertical eights on top of each other in the same space as one. And like all great Experimental's, it was lost in a crash, pushing it on a windy day at a comp.... A few years later, now involved in full sized aerobatic scene, the Russian's present to the world, the Sukhoi 26. The latest carbon fibre aerobatic machine from the Soviet Union, had my bloody model wing design on it! LOL. :) It it flew like my model as well! Big fat section with the centre of lift moved way forward, it pitched amazingly tight with no loss of speed, the big tractor radial pulled the weight slowly up the vertical line, minimising drag of higher speeds, and when pointing down, the big fat wing with a closed throttle and propeller drag, it came down the vertical so slowly, with full controllability to be able to roll at max rate. The theory was proven in the real world.... with someone else's money! Lol. :)

That is crazy and pretty cool! You can see this take major skill, strength and stamina!

I had a plane like that with lines in the early seventies. It was a Cox PT Trainer and I had a black Ju87 Stuka. Put a black widow motor in it and it was fast.

That was awesome!

I've only recently become aware that people still did CL. Its never in any advertising though.

I have one of these planes in my loft think it was my grandads. To afraid to give it a go as the learning curve looks pretty steep!

I did a CL workshop with my son, once upon a time. When I got a chance to try it myself, I was so surprised. With the background a blur, you're looking at the plane, and it really responds aerodynamically to the controls! From outside the circle, it looks only ballistic.

This is pretty cool. I have heard of control line but never done/seen it myself.

Awesome skills and tolerance for dizziness.

Excellent pilot with a good plane. I remember I had the Thuderbolt by Bop Palmer which had differential ailerons. My congratulations to the pilot, he is calm well coordinated and young. We had the Merco, ED bee. ED Special. and a few other engines including the Italian Super tigre , Austrian and Russian engines.......... Great times in my life. Even though radio is very attractive, my grandson would like this and so I should go back to it to give him the experience.

Control line flying you have direct physical links to your model planes while r/c and free flight are not. Jim Walker of U S developed this type of flying several tens years ago. Very easy to fly but lifelong hard to mastered it. you're the best

Awesome! I flew JR Stunt (contest) n the 50's, full AMA pattern, Nobler, Fox 35 adjusted needlevalvue to 4stroke. Gieskie or Alderich Nobler, don't Rember. Great memoriies with Dad. Took all winter to build the Nobler and get ready for contest season.
