Control and Freedom | Ajahn Brahm | 05-01-2007

Ajahn Brahm' talks about the control/freedom paradox. How much of our lives is actually controlled by us, how much by forces outside ourselves? How free are we? The relinquishment of our controlling impulse brings freedom, while the ego, with its judgement apparatus, leads to bondage and despair.

    Wow... i am quite a control freak... i think especially with my relationship. Because I'm afraid of losing it. But I need to learn to trust and stop suffocating other people. It's true. My parents controlled me, I didn't learn anything, I just tried to find better ways of hiding things from them. All of this breeds misunderstanding and... that's not love. I don't want to bring that into my relationship as well. Thank you for your wise words. And LOL to your comment on beer. xD

    A very inspiring teaching, displaying the essense of freedom. Brings joy to the listener. However we have a tendency to disagree at times. Trust & love are factors of concentration. Seeing ego illusion is wisdom. The Buddha taught parental responsibilities in the Sigalovada Sutta. If we are developed we have a responsibility to "impart" this harmless conduct to our children in a skillful way.

    I love ajahn Brahm and listen to him almost daily but I did want to point out that correlation and causation are not the same thing, it’s important to note that higher incidence of churches with teenage pregnancy, crime etc could be due to completely different factors that have nothing to do with control- such as lower socioeconomic regions have more churches and higher crime but these can be caused by poverty or other factors. Other than this one point, this was a great talk.

    The way to attainment is vipasanna. The mental purifications that really calm the mind and remove the kelisa. How i realise nibanna through vipasanna? (Greed,hatred,delusions)are momentarily removed in that moment. Sotapanna attainment how it occur and the sequence you will experience..... It starts with vipasanna sitting meditation then until mind shuts down.Before it shuts down,you are clearly comprehending the inbreath watching the beginning,the middle and the end of the breath. Ceesation of conciousness occur during this moment. The mind suddenly shuts down. Ceesation of conciousness is similar to mind shuts down: When this happen,you will not know.(it is because your mind has now stop fabricating just like a factory stop production all machine are switch off and no one working) That moment of not knowing is the moment you enter magga(path)and phala(fruition)where you are no more existing in this ignorance existence of samsara. After the magga phala attainment is over you will be in strong samadhi adsobtion where your whole body are radiance with strong pleasurable sensations.(jhana adsobtion) At that moment you still do not know you have attain magga phala.(only pleasurable sensation overwhelming the mind) As these strong samadhi adsobtion gradually subside,you will now be able to aware of the calmness of mind and body sitting in erect and firm(in lower samadhi) At this moment you can easily aware of your breath as it rise on inbreath and as it fall on outbreath. It is easily notice without effort. It was during this time you will suddenly remember or recollect the mind ceesation or shuts down clearly. You remember it very clearly before it shuts down, your were clearly comprehending inbreath rising,middle and end of breath and suddenly everything vanished,no more conciousness,mind shuts down. Then you realise whole body immersed with strong pleasurable sensations and when the sensation is over you can realise your mind is peaceful ,happy and mindfulness on inbreath and outbreath is easy and that your sitting meditation posture is straight and erect or is very firm(In samadhi state) In this way you now come to realise that you have finally come to know how suffering ends. Nibanna is being realise by your pure mind. Mind that is non greed,non hatred,non delusions. You are now a stream entry or is now a confirmed Ariya or sotapanna.You are free from 4 woeful realms of existence and you only have 7 more existence one as human and another 6 life as devas. If you are hard working and if you continue practice your vipasanna meditation and come to ceesations of conciousness for the second times,your next attainment is Sakadagami and you only have 3 more existence.And if the third time ceesation you are Anagami and the 4th time you are Arahat and will be fully aware of everything and totally free from ignorance completely and never to be born again. May my explaination be enlightening to vipasanna meditators and what is being explain are the final knowledge you will experience when your time for attainment is ripe. Suki hotu. It seems that discipline does lead to freedom somehow. Why is this unconditional love so hard to maintain if you are not with others who think the same way?

    The main thing I follow is, moderation. I dont do drugs and Hardly drink, but I do smoke Tho I have severely cut back and trying to quit.(married BTW about the sex thing ) But in another Dhamma, Ajahn Brahm explains how you cant force yourself to do something, or you will make it harder and most likely be unsuccessful. YOo need to do things in moderation and let it be, and you will find that as you do not force it, you can/will succeed. Hope that makes sense

    Ajahn Brahm claims that just because the body is sick, the mind needn't be so. I would hope he'd concede that if certain parts of the brain are damaged, one may lose the capacity to introspect, to reason, to engage in meditative practices. One's wisdom may be lost as a result; one can become aggressive and habitually paranoid. So to some extent the mind IS dependent on the body. There's no point in talking about what lies beyond thinking, when the unfortunate person can no longer access that higher part. However, I agree that in the case of many illnesses it's quite possible to relate to pain in healthy and positive ways, which may contribute to spiritual growth.

  • @thomasang8248

    @thomasang8248

    I think mental illness is a more tricky, and thus separate topic. I remember Ajahn Brahm did cover this in one of his video. My opinion on this topic is this: If one is mentally sick, it is very difficult to control what he is thinking, and meditate - but very often, one will react based on his habitual tendencies. For example, a person who is friendly and happy when is mentally healthy might have a high probability of being good to others and thinking about happy things even when he is mentally ill, as compared to people who are unfriendly and negative when they are healthy. That is why we need to make full use of the time and opportunity that we have now to meditate and to cultivate kindness towards ourself and others, when we still have that free will, so much so that these good habits become ingrained into the mind that even when we lost our sanity, we will still be inclined to do these things without the brain knowing, so to speak. In this perspective, the mind is independent of the body, because the brain might be mentally sick, but the mind will react and response accordingly based on our characters and habits that we have cultivated when we are healthy and sane. I would think that two different person will react differently when they are mentally sick and have lose that free will to think. And how they will react will depend largely (perhaps not totally) on their habitual tendencies and characters when they are still mentally healthy.

    Samoht G It's a tricky issue indeed. Whether or not meditative practice can wind up helping the mind after brain damage, I think, would depend on the nature and extent of the brain damage. In some cases, what you say may be true: Someone with brain damage who has engaged in meditative practice would not be aggressive and paranoid, but gentle and kind. But I don't see why that should be NECESSARILY so. If the brain damage is extensive enough, it can not only destroy the capacity for introspection, but all the positive qualities too, because that part of the brain responsible for retaining those qualities may have been destroyed. There's much about the brain that we don't know...

  • @thomasang8248

    @thomasang8248

    10 жыл бұрын

    Agree with you that there is so much about the brain we don't know about. But I am inclined to think that somehow, if a person is habitually nice when he is sane, that goodness will be expressed in some ways even when he is mentally insane. So, all is not lost, so to speak. But I guess we are just speculating here. In the meanwhile, when we are still healthy, we should cherish the time and use it to do some meditation! :)

    @kailee622 I would say that it is very sad that you feel that way. Might I suggest that you consider that you cannot change the behavior of anyone else, but you can change yourself and your own behavior. It seems to me that the best option is to either not allow yourself to be controlled, and at the same time allow them to be who they are (see the vid on "difficult people!-excellent!")or failing that, avoid the people who make you feel controlled. Easier said than done- I know!!! lol

    ...mich freut, dass Ajan Brahm sagt, man soll sich von niemand beleidigen lassen. Es gibt ja das Prinzip von "Anatta" (Nicht-Selbst) im Buddhismus, d.h. man soll sich nicht mit seiner Rolle identifizieren, mit dem eigenen Erfolg, mit denen eigenen Leistungen usw. Ich dachte bisher immer, dann muss man auch die bissigen Kommentare anderer Leute einstecken - als eine Art Übung in Bescheidenheit. Aber es ist wohl falsch, das zuzulassen. Man tut ja im Grunde auch dem anderen Menschen keinen Gefallen damit, wenn man das mitspielt. Letztens hatte ich eine komische Situation mit einer Person, die sich ebenfalls als Buddhistin sieht. Sie wollte meine Meinung zu verschiedenen Themen wissen, und ich habe ihr einiges erzählt und auch das eine oder andere Buch erwähnt. Es kam dann die Antwort: "Bis Du immer so theoretisch", "Du kommst mir vor wie jemand, der nur Zitate sammelt", "Was ist der Mensch hinter den Theorien" usw. Ich war so sprachlos, dass mir keine Antwort einfiel! Später fiel mir ein, ich hätte z.B. antworten können " Im Moment ist der Mensch hinter den Theorien derjenige, der Dir alles, was er zu Deiner Frage weiß, oder jedenfalls das Wichtigste, mitteilt, weil er gern hilfreich sein möchte...". - Woher kommt diese Aggressivität vieler Leute - vor allem immer dann, wenn es sich um Fragen von Bildung/ Wissen/ Theorie dreht? Laufen die mit einem Minderwertigkeitsgefühl herum, mit irgendeinem Ressentiment? Steckt irgendeine gesellschaftliche Konditionierung dahinter (im Sinne von: "Wenn Du's nicht mit Theorien hast, bist Du nichts wert?").

    I wonder if it's true that no one ever gets a big head from being praised. Having worked in and observed arts and entertainment for years, I can tell you that many MANY people get big heads when they are praised continuously, have huge amounts of success, and forget what it's like to have people say "no." Seems to be equally true in politics and finance. Or at least it seems so. Seems to me accepting praise CAN be just as dangerous as accepting criticism.

  • @composerdoh

    @kailee622 I'm sorry. :-( But the plus side is that you seem to have moved on and grown from the experience. Now perhaps you just need to perceive that this is true! If it makes you feel any better, I left academia too. For very different reasons, but I've struggled with guilt and regret for that nebula of choices for years, and am only now beginning to see an inkling of why it all happened and how it was for the best. It will get better, I promise. I hope it goes faster4u than it did 4me.

    I don't get it, we are part of nature, our thoughts our deeds, yet we have somehow come to think of evil as something we have to put out of our life's. But isn't evil in its social forms also part of the process ? Or is it something from the outside of nature that we had to get rid of ? Aren't we all universally bound by the universe itself ? Doesn't that include evil ?

    Precept five refers to any intoxicants. The only Intoxicants known to the buddha would have been alcohol and marijuana i believe But it needs to be reiterated that the REASON this is laid down is not because those things are bad in themselves but because they are not conducive to good meditation, and further CAN lead one to behave in a way that harms others and ourselves. However, I drink and take drugs (including hallucinogens unknown to the buddha) and don't believe it breaks my precepts!
