Contrary to Popular Opinion - Bill Maher in Real Time

The iconoclastic host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” sits down with Tina Brown to talk about calling out hypocrisy and malfeasance on right and left, the dangers of groupthink and his new book, “What This Comedian Said Will Shock You.”
Now in its 20th year, the Aspen Ideas Festival is the Aspen Institute’s signature summer public event. From June 23-June 29, 2024 more than 300 leaders and innovators gather in the Rocky Mountains to engage in deep and inquisitive discussion of the issues that shape our lives and challenge our times, spanning politics, business, science, the arts, education, and more. #AspenIdeas

He is vital to turning the mirror on the Democrats in their enabling of the Woke / Far Left influence ( and "stupid" ideas ) that his fellow Liberals have been too cowardly to deal with. And his calling out the Right for BS is good, too. He has the kind of spine the nation needs. He also has some very, very lame moments where he hasn't "researched", is not sounding bright, not on point. Megyn Kelly called out HIS BS on Trump where Bill's vacuous passion ( and laziness ) deserve derision. He, like all of us, has his hypocritical moments. I don't worship the guy, his "audience" does, and I can still walk-and-chew-gum in being grateful for his strong voice as well as recent respectful nature towards "the other 1/2 of the country" that have their good reasons for not supporting the Left. He gets it and doesn't go down "The Deplorables" lane. That's more uniting than Biden ( or Hillary ).

I wont deny Bill Maher makes some well-needed points in the conversation that are just about as honest as you can get. He's broken more ground than I can say. And I've watched him since the beginning of "Real Time" My issue with him still remains- He can be a smug dick. Forgive my own honesty, but I think we could use more kindness in the world. This interviewer is asking well-crafted questions and is pivoting every time Bill bulldozes past her. Despite this, shes patient with him and continues to praise his perspective. And yet Bill interrupts her throughout and insults the audience. Just like on his podcast "Club Random" on "The View" he points out something is a joke when the laughter doesn't roar like he wants, insisting people are too sensitive. Maybe so, man, but there's better ways to react when your attempt doesn't land with the world. As much as Bill calls out the ego of his adversaries, I'd encourage him to remember he has his own. We all do. The goal is to use it but also keep it in check. Humble yourself mate. You're no better than the rest of us.

First off, he's a comedian. 😅 Aside from ranting kinda being part of his brand, it's also just hard not to sound pompous when you're that intelligent, creative, well informed, and therefore PISSED OFF about all the idiocy going on. But, yeah, he can be rude and self centered and interruptive and callous and excessive. Sometimes that's fine, and sometimes - Bill, just rein in that massive ego, dude... Still love the guy though, and I'm glad we at least still *have* fearless voices like his calling out all the bullshit out there...

So perhaps my past feelings about him were merely a projection. I have good friends that I've had for years, but I've always been an acquired taste. Which is how I perceive Bill. He of all pp should be able to OPEN his mind and understand ALSO the Palestine situation, not be so blindingly CLOSED and regurgitate the same BS that The politicians of ISRAEL are saying...."you can kill the people but YOU WOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO KILL the Idea".. His own words exactly back few years, were he admitted that there is not way BY KILLING then we can end it... I had a decent enough education, but was very unsuited to being in class. So much of it was simply reciting by rote. I think your High School is the equivalent of our Secondary schools where finish around age 17 before going onto college. By that point should really know *how* to learn, which is what is missing with so many. We had a civics class only once or twice a week, while had English and Irish classes daily, and French and German classes 3 times a week. Most of those languages have done nothing for me in the intervening 30 years since finished school, but a lot of what learning in civics has helped me a lot more, in particular with critical thinking. That is something I see as being the biggest thing lacking from so so many people these days.

I think it’s where I learned to keep my mouth shut until I had learned about various subjects. At about 7-8yo I repeated something I heard in an adult conversation and my mother gave me a verbal beatdown about not being accepted into an adult conversation if I didn’t learn to not repeat what I’ve heard.

Just by standing back and asking questions abt things they grew up believing, where once they'd never ask them. Gaining objective footing to build more informed viewpoints.

(It will change for those sentenced to death - Trump merrily signed execution orders even on the last day in office in 2021. It will change for soldiers, depending on what crazy idea comes to his head. Or for state employees if he decides to blackmail the Congress by not paying wages to postal workers etc.) We'll survive. His presidency had even one positive effect on Europe: thanks to his protectionism, the negotiations of the scandalous Transatlantic Trade Pact were halted. He damaged American interests there but he unintentionally helped us.

It's a possibility for sure especially since he's reorganized the GOP into an army of goons that will bend any rule at his whim. The good news is that 8 years ago, NYers were the only ones who had been hearing him whine for years and were just sick of him. Now a lot more of the country is just as fatigued and just want him to shut up and go away.
