What Do You Do When The Unexpected Happens?
Film a Contingency Review! In this eighteenth episode, we test a 2019 Honda Civic Mark X 1.0 EX CVT, which looks very classy indeed. On this occasion, we find weaknesses in the infotainment system, complain about the lack of spare wheel, witness a flapping dealership plate in the rear window and generally ramble on about things of no consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then!

I absolutely LOVE the look of that mark Civic. If my 2013 one wasn't so good at doing it's job I'd be looking at swapping.

Yes, I sourced a 2017 Civic Tourer (one of the very last) a couple of years. They are really good!
Very happy to see a review of one of the later Civics. It's not much a car than it is a mobile computer seeing the technology inside and the thick owner's manual to go with it. Shame about the lack of a spare wheel (there is room for one!) and a mechanical handbrake but that's the way things are going. PS: also enjoyed the recent Dacia Jogger review. 😊

I do like an easy to use infotainment system, a spare wheel and a proper handbrake, sir. Sadly, I don't think that this Civic has any of those things, but I do very much like the way it drives regardless!
I had the 1.5 turbo sport plus absolutely loved the car recently sold it and bought the new hybrid civic (my 4th civic) which is an amazing car to drive and it looks really good. Not as “out there” with the design as the mk10 which in my opinion was a unique looking car in comparison to its competition definitely made people look twice when they were first launched. Always loved civics especially since the mk8 the “spaceship” one.

Yes, the new Civic does look rather nice, doesn't it? Probably a bit more conservative than some of the previous ones, however. Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting!
Had 9th & 10th gen Civics, the last being the SR 1.0 cvt, both were really nice and very reliable. Bought a spare wheel which is available. You get plenty of safety features on the mid spec SR unlike some German brands. Now the owner of the latest Mazda 3 and the build quality and interior quality is amazing and you get proper heating control buttons and an easy to use rotary dial for all the radio & Sat nav etc. The Japanese really know how to build cars.

I don't own a car but the Mazda 3 would be very high on my interest list. The interior looks to be gorgeous.

Roy, you wouldn't be disappointed if you test drive one, the Actiive X 186bhp is the one to go for, and great fuel economy.

Been actually after a Mazda3 Saloon for review for a while. They aren't easy to get hold of, actually. The earlier current generation Mazda3 Saloons were actually available with a beige leather interior and a manual gearbox.

You can get a manual new MAZDA3 and on the top of the range burgundy leather seats and dash board that looks great. Cheers

Yes, I know, I have looked into them a fair bit.
A Edinburgh Registered Civic most likey bought from the Honda Dealer 10 Mins from my house. Thank you for this honest review on this Civic, i think the Complicated Touch Screen would put me off, too many things to go into and look at. Did i hear right that you do not get a radio on the entry level version? Seems to be common place not to include a rear wiper on cars.

Yes, I think on the base model (which I have never seen), you didn't even get a radio! It also was missing several other things. The facelifted ones had a much better infotainment system, and the current Mark XI version is probably a better car overall. Good old Edinburgh plate!
I am still drive 1.0 cvt EX it awesome smooth drive. So recently i been car service Honda for replace wet timing belt it cost me £1300. So next other 6 years will replace. So I decided keep up to 4 years then sell car.

Oh yes, the wet timing belts in these engines really were not a very good idea.
12:46 Do they have the 'magic' rear seats where you can fold them up?
@lloydvehicleconsulting

No, this was the first generation of Civic for a while not to have them, strangely enough!
Great cars, across the board, it would be nice to see some lighter interiors and the latest is by the far the best bar some of the retro models ej' ek for obvious reasons :), thank you

Yes, a lighter interior would most certainly have been better. Thank you very much indeed for watching again, Mr and Mrs Quirk, I know that you have driven many of these in the past.
think the back seats fold the same as the honda jazz to which myself has , brill idea

Unfortunately, they don't in this generation of Civic, sir.
Hi Joseph , The Civic 4 Door was only available in 1.0 and 1.6 DIESEL in the UK, this car was made in Turkey . When Honda announced they where going to close Swindon they also announced Turkey would close too , very sadly .

Very good, sir!
why is the cars no. plate in back window and flapping about? supprised thats its a 1.0. engine

It's not actually the car's number plate, it's the trade plates I have to use otherwise I am not covered by the dealership insurance. It's a massive pain trying to get them to fit in the back window sometimes.
It's a nice looking car when viewed from outside. However, I do agree with all of your criticisms: dark interior, poor rear visibility, confusing electronics. Your comment "fake stitching" somehow seemed to sum this car up for me.

They look very good, and they are really nice to drive. It's when you get inside that things start to get a bit less pleasant. It's not surprising that they dispensed with the infotainment system later, and the replacement model does have better visibility.
Nice review Mr Lloyd, You found a good looking car but far too many gimmicks and complication for me. I do not need nor do I want something with so much which could go wrong. As a committed owner of Honda motorcycles, I would expect their cars to be well made, with excellent quality and longevity. I simply don't need a small car like this. Better a larger, older one, at a much cheaper price.

It's a pretty big car, to be honest, it's about the same size as an Accord from 20 years ago. Some cars have easy to use infotainment systems, but sadly this not one of them. It does look quite good, however, and it is very nice to drive.
Not a mention of the ridiculous wet cambelt that needs changing at 60000 or 6 years, which ever comes first.. You're looking at a bill of well over £1600.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Well, that's a reason not to buy one, isn't it?
Funny how the Japanese lose their tech savvy when it comes to infotainment system design. They are also lagging in BEV technology but do other things so well.

The Mark XI Civic is a much better car. I am hoping to try one of those at some point. The infotainment system on this pre-facelift Mark X looks embarrassingly poor by comparison in 2023. It is a shame, because this is a very lovely car to drive, and I think that it is quite handsome too.
