Continental Divide Trail GEAR LIST! NOBO 2022

In this video I we review just about every gram of equipment that I will be carrying on the Continental Divide Trail. I will be carrying my tent, food, and all other necessities 3,100 miles from the Crazy Cook monument on the US / Mexico border in New Mexico through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho before finishing at the Canadian border in Glacier, National Park! In 2021 I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and I will be relying on the experiences I had to help guide me safely and happily cross the deserts, mesas, praries, basins, forest, and mountains of the American west.

    Great gear video; thanks to you and your sister for creating it! Very helpful as I get ready to start at Crazy Cook soon (I start on the same date you started last year!), although I am only doing the state of NM on this trip. Your pre-filter is genius! Any chance you have a bit of video, or some description, you could share with us on how you constructed it? I'll probably give it a shot myself pretty soon but would love a few details on exactly what you did and how you did it. Love your videos, and the Q&A sessions; very informative! Congratulations on an amazing adventure, and journey completed!

    Hey Chris so glad you found my video helpful! I do have a few clips of the pre-filter making process in my CDT announcement video-- kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYCDmribhtGoeqw.htmlm00s I used a specific plastic bonding glue but I can't recall which one at the moment. I used the pre-filter for every waterborne for the entire trail and never had any issues with the parts separating. I'd DEFINITELY recommend you build yourself you, NM especially is brutal for water

    hey there - - long-time subscriber of you channel. I started to rewatch your CDT series as I am contemplating my attempt of CDT with two sections hikes (split over two years). As I rewatch your CDT adventure, I am struck by the incredible content, learnings, insights and experience you provide. While watching this video, you mentioned creating a "pre-filter" mechanism of your water filtration system. I am wondering if you can share any other details on supplies and guidance for creating "pre-filter" (most interested on the material and related specifications used to create the filter). Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Hey Andrew, thanks for the proverbial coffee! I did a brief kind of overview of my prefilter in my CDT announcement video on youtube, available here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYBkmribhtGoeqw.htmlsi-9QceFOvymZ4I-w36&t=13m00s . Basically it was the Sawyer hose attachment nipple end that I sawed down and filed for the female thread, glued to the similarly sawed off and filed top / male thread of a smartwater bottle. I attached the two pieces using www.loctiteproducts.com/en/products/fix/super-glue/loctite_plasticsbondingsystem.html , which worked AMAZINGLY and hasn't failed yet even after both the entire CDT and PCT. The mesh is just held in place using the standard Sawyer gasket. Perhaps I should do a full video on this item, you're far from the first person to ask about it! Thanks again for the donation, please let me know how it goes for you! BTW: I would ABSOLUTELY 110% recommend building yourself one. Check a quick example of its effacacy at: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoF-2qqtgJCxmto.htmlsi-gnPkV5pBNM5Ii17S&t=9m04s

  • @travelinbeat

    I don't use a gimbal-- all stabilization is achieved with the GoPro's features-- the trekking pole mount is a "StickPic," a small, lightweight, thru-hiker-made accessory without which I would be totally hopeless to achieve so many of the shots I capture. I'd DEFINITELY recommend the StickPic to anyone interested in shooting videos while using trekking poles, and the owner, Rodney is a super awesome dude!

    Do you have a leash for your ice axe? If it slips out of your hands then you are connected by the leash. I use a 6’ nylon strap. Tie to head other end tie a loop to put your hand through. Did you have a knife? You might consider a small knife. Good vid, thanks for sharing.

    So far this whole pre-filter idea is purely theoretical and tested only in my kitchen sink. The real test will be seeing how well it performs with the real-world struggles of filthy water, freezing temperatures, dirt, and frequent use. If it works as I'm hoping, I'd love to get some out to my friends:)

    that bidet works best if you get the small (perfect designated size) Evian water battle which has just a tad bigger hole for bidet to fit into. I found most water bottles too small to get It in and out.

    That pre filter is an awesome idea! what is this "special" glue you speak of? PVC glue?

  • @travelinbeat

    @travelinbeat

    2 жыл бұрын

    I was wondering if someone might ask about that!! I tried to research the specific type of plastic used in these components and then which glue is made for this type and the consensus seemed to be that LocTite 681925 2-part Plastic Bonding System was what I wanted. So far it feels good and solid, we'll see how it handles trail life. I also used an epoxy around the seam after letting the Loctite cure completely. I doubt if the epoxy will do much for the strength specifically, but I wanted to kind of seal it up a bit so no small debris could get in between the glued components. Plus I already had epoxy lying around and I just like finding uses for it 😄

    You might consider having the sealskinz from Cuba,NM onward. There'll be snow and big stretches of high mountain meadows full of melting icy water runoff through the San Pedro wilderness (right after Cuba). And both again from a few miles past Ghost Ranch up to Chama. What is your approximate base weight? (I am not a light or ultra light backpacker, so no shade here. I just like to have an idea of how much weight different hikers pack. Thx.)

  • @travelinbeat

    Thanks for the headsup on the sealskinz and Cuba! Base weight definitely moves around a bit depending on what gear I have out at the time, so it may be easiest just to check my LighterPack page linked in the description. I definitely reference UL, but don't have the interest in going all the way UL
